Ahhh- where will our kids go to college….Joe and I have fun with this "dream/game" for a long time. He visited Stanford and called me and said- if she wants to go this far away to a school like this- she can. My parents gave me the - we have to be able to drive you, drop you off and get back- days driving radius. I figured out that radius on the map and looked at schools on that perimeter. Whittenburg was one- we stopped to see Denison, overnight in Granville (my mother's suggestion) and the rest is history. When we moved to Granville - the quintessential hometown to raise a family-a pause for me was realizing our kids would most likely not attend our Alma mater. We really don't know where they'll go - we have fun driving through college towns- Peter loves his Duke Baseball shirt from last summer's drive home lunch location. Sally recently asked about Wake Forest. This is as much fun for Joe and I. But not the point of my blog today…certainly a great topic to dig into as I listen to parents praise the KTU program- Explore College- the parent part of the program this weekend!!
I've always thought it might be fun for one of the kids to go to Middlebury (we vacationed close by on Lake Dunmore for years growing up- one of my favorite places in the world) or even St. Lawrence- we were lucky enough to visit friends who work there one year- one of my favorite drives was through Lake Placid on the way to VT) but it what lurked in the back of my mind was- but the winters- oh so terribly cold…..
Not anymore. Extroverting while at Denison on Saturday I realized this winter has prepared us for anything. We're capable to roll with the cold much more than I ever had imagined. This morning I walked the dog and though- oh it must be very cold today. I was even wearing the church mission purchase/recycled fur coat and thought it was cold. I was out on that day with -21 and places in Licking County deemed the coldest anywhere in the USA. Today felt just about as cold. Just looked at my phone: it is -5, yes negative 5. I'm typing this to document it. This is the cold winter- the snowy cold winter. We'll remember this - like the ice storm, the hot ball game summer, the wind storm summer. Life on Newark-Granville Road is cold and preparing us for our future no doubt! Of course this may drive our children's eyes to southern schools…liberal arts Rollin's College is looking pretty good too!

Love all day long…..
Today was a day a day filled with love….Denison love for sure as the day was spent on campus and Denison was this wonderful partner to my work and my family. Kids Tech University- an amazing program brought to Licking County by Marcia Downes from Virgina Tech (I love VA- I was born there, my dad is a Hoakie). Thanks to Dow Chemical, individual donors, Licking County Foundation, Park National Bank, Polymer Technologies, Denison, OSU, A Call to College- The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art and Technology and a bunch of great staff and volunteers 100 plus kids 9-12 and their parents/grandparents had an amazing on campus experience today at Denison. There are 4 events in the year- 1st one went really well at OSU-N, today was the 2nd…can't wait for 3rd and 4th- one back at Denison and 4th at The Works. These kid were in a science classroom with wonderful learning about psychology and the brain happening- yeah Nester Matthews!! Parents learning about how to help their child achieve college- helpful hints for all. Kids from all over, from various socio-economic backgrounds, girls and boys- amazing. I left Newark-Granville Road at 8 am thrilled to help post signs to help these folks navigate the fair college on the hill.
The day also included Sally and Peter and Granville Red basketball teams playing games during half-time during the Women's and Men's Basketball games. Joe coordinates this and we all appreciate his making this happen. We thank the Coaches, staff and players at Denison for hosting, allowing this to happen. It is so much fun to watch your kid on a college court, watch their excitement and enthusiasm. I really do love to spend time in the gym watching my kids play, watch Joe coach. Sally joined the club- all Leithauser kids have had Mike Hills announce….basket by Leithauser! Joe and kids met me in Curtis to have lunch with KTU crew. Wow- Denison's food service is doing an exceptional job and it was fun to connect with a friend working there now. Kids and KTU students and staff we're all thrilled with the offerings and atmosphere.
My life loves days like this- when my own history, my work and family's passions all meet together-thank you Denison for the special role you play. Perfect timing for me as I get ready to support:

accepting death and celebrating life.
I've shared with a few people- I truly believe heaven needed get-it-done volunteers last week. Four people who contributed greatly to this community, who personally inspired me past away. It feels like heaven opens up at time and energies move from here to there.
The first I learned about was Ted Barclay. I met Ted when he held infant Sally while I gave blood at the Granville Rotary Blood drive in 2005. I knew of him but that was when we learned each other's names. I'm so glad I knew him and I'm so glad I attended his funeral this week. I learned more about Ted and his impressive legacy. I took notes and have future blog material. In particular I loved the quote in by Emerson - Nothing Great Was Ever Achieved without Enthusiasm.
The second was Jill Griesse. This has taken some time to sink in as she was indeed an inspiration for me. I met Jill during my Denison days at a fundraiser. She has always been a role model for giving, supporting and making things happen for her causes. It was an honor and privilege to know her, be hosted by her and have her share honest rich advice and perspective with me. I will miss her so very much, but there are others closer who will miss her more and I feel for them with her death. Her memorial service is Feb 18th and I know it will be a comfort as I process this loss and heaven's gain.
The third was Joe Fleming- Denison's past IT Director and Works volunteer. It was always fun for me to see this Denison friend volunteering at The Works when I was there with my kids or volunteering myself. All volunteers that help with school tours and education advise inspire me. It was an honor to talk with his son and hear the stories of his Granville days.
My week wrapped up with the news about Henry Hook- Newark physician. I didn't know him as well but certainly enjoyed his participation at Works events. He was a dedicated member no doubt because of his passion and interest in technology and science. His obituary gave me insight and perspective.
I am a person that sees many sides to things. I understand death is part of life, I accept death but then then I think about a person simply not being here any longer and it baffles me. This can't be- all of these people did wonderful things and I sooo enjoyed their company- how can they be gone. Then I think about the loss for their loved ones and I'm sad. I updated the database at The Works, marked these folks as deceased. That hit me- we won't mail to them. We'll keep their records for history and certainly continued to be inspired by their good work. They all leave legacies that will carry on what they started here. Heaven is in a good place with these four good souls. Life on Newark-Granville Road is better me, my children, those that came before us and will come after because they were here.
The good news is a beautiful new life was welcomed to our community! Lauren and Canon Krebehene shared the happy news June is a big sister to Freeman William! Perfect timing- life goes on and their is much to love and be thankful for on Newark-Granville Road. All around there is great comfort in faith, friendships to support us, people to inspire us and hope for the future.

escape, take a break and be happy…..
I appreciate this article from Denison's president Adam Weinberg. I found it on one of his "tweets" with the comment similar to- good advice for students…..I think it is good advice for anyone who may put their life into their work, and work into their life…..or well said at the Ground Hog Breakfast last week- their heart into the business and the business in their heart…

Reality is I read the article quickly and stopped at the point I really liked- point 3 about disengagement is what I wanted to explore further on my blog, reflect on how I do this in my life on Newark-Granville Road. One way I disengage at the end of the day is to read. The book club I am part of helps keep me engaged and therefore disengaged! I do sleep better when I let my brain focus on the pages and their worlds. I like this idea for a regular walk- Griffey would certainly appreciate this. I will use TV or this blogging ritual but reality is I prefer not to use electronics- something about brain waves still being engaged with multimedia approaches. Another point about disengagement for me is place- just came from Moundbuilders Country Club. One of the reasons we value MCC in our lives on Newark-Granville Road it is a place that lets us focus on our family and friends. We can be there to enjoy one another and escape a bit- Joe enjoys this too and why he is willing to serve on its Board. I'm grateful to him and the others serving to help this special place in our lives.
Because I posted the article I read the full article- I strongly recommend taking a look- I value his perspective and recommendations. The good news is I'm following his advice on most and will try hard to make sure all 6 are part incorporated into my life on Newark-Granville Road.

how much snow would a snow plow plow…...
if a snow plow could plow snow! I don't know why this silly ditty is stuck in my head? Maybe because I just drove home from downtown Newark and felt like I was skiing out west. I learned to ski in high school at Blue Knob in PA and I learned to ski on ice. I didn't experience powder snow until an adult on ski trips with Joe. Anyway the drive home felt more like that kind of skiing than driving. I did see one snow plow going the other way on Rt. 16. I did drive one lightly dusted pavement on Newark-Granville Road at the Cherry Valley intersection. The snow plow's yellow lights glowing ahead of me in the distance. It was a beautiful drive home and I am sooo grateful for Martha the SUV with 4 wheel drive and good tires…and a full tank of gas.

Here is what I wrote in August of 2009- 3rd or 4th post!! Wow- never thought I'd still be blogging…..busy, tired, sad, happy enjoying my kids while Joe out of town….all reasons for bringing back an oldie…..

-It is hard to believe Labor Day weekend is next weekend. We're looking forward to a visit from my parents and some great activities- including picnicking at Dawes withe Bluegrass, BBQ and Boom next Sunday 9/3. Fantastic music, beautiful setting and fun people- join us! Tickets are available at Dawes in August or at the door (doors open at 3) tickets are $10, 10 and under free!
We'll be sorry to miss the movie at the GSVA- another activity you should consider!
And back to favorites- lunch yesterday was indeed a favorite- Farmers Market BLT- the pepper bacon from the vendor at the Gville farmers market with all the coolers- I should know their name, a light and flavorful lettuce from another, sourdough bread from...the cat folks and tomatoes from nice neighbors- we were in heaven! It was also good to connect with some fun people and see Denison students and families back in town.

Cocktails by the Fire Reflections
Ahhhhh- Cocktails by the Fire 2014 is almost in the books. Last night was indeed a very special night for me for many reasons. Was it perfect? Depends on how you define and measure perfection. I'm not sure perfection really exists. Was it a success- hands down! When you have over 350 (guests, volunteers, in-kind donors) all in one place supporting a place the Works how can you not call it a success. And of course I have to take the time to say thank you.
So many people to thank and I'll miss so many so I won't go into detailed lists now. I'm thankful to those that walked with me- the host committee is key to this event. I love that this event has this tradition- not only to reach new people but to give The Works staff a chance to connect with folks in this way. The tasting party, the emails, the circle of friends and family to bring into the event. Staff- we don't do this very often- through a 350 person party. We're a museum- we do school and adult tours, engage with individuals and small groups- but once, sometimes two times during HATSOFF! years, we close down the museum, push back the exhibits and open a bar. This is where the inability to be perfect happens. But we pull it off thanks to staff and volunteers. Often staff's family are the volunteers! I'm pretty proud of Sally for helping so well yesterday- love sharing my love of events @ The Works with my family. My parents are here helping with the kids (seeing basketball too) and of course Joe might as well be staff. Same goes for Rori's mom, Marcia's husband and daughter, Craig's wife, Laura and Shelly's husbands, Sam's brother, Jenna and Justin's kids, Janice's husband…oh that's right I don't want to be doing lists here…sorry.
What is fun for me is I get to see so much- not all. I missed a number of great guests! Can't wait to see Carlo's photos- facebook helps me with this a bit. I'm so grateful to every person who attended- I love guests who come pay and enjoy enjoy enjoy- this event is for you and you do it well. You tell me it is your favorite and you wear a smile the whole night. You dress up, you theme up, you tell your friends, you keep the party going in downtown Newark- woo hoo! I don't get to talk to all of you, but just seeing you or having the moment we had in the museum- means so much.
I love seeing new and old friends go the extra mile for this event- the Matesich team puts meeting time, set up, delivery, pick-up, tap time into this even and boy does it make a difference - I could type and type about them. The Works volunteers and staff- I can't stop typing about them- the bartenders were on fire last night- wow! The new 1882 HATSOFF! room- WOW!! I love HATSOFF! years and this year is already in such an amazing place becuase of the shared talent and time. Flowers and decorations for this year's CTBF- wow wow wow- Kim Downs delighted me for the the past two days with aroma, creativity, innovation and pure beauty. Everyone oohed and ahhed and learned…yes Cocktails by the Fire was a success- we took our mission and moved to night time for grown-ups.
The Glass Studio deserves it's own paragraph. The whole Glass Studio program is incredible and growing in amazing ways. Seeing both AIRs (artist in residence)- most recent and incoming-showcasing their gifts for The Works was incredible. The glasses, slumped pieces, art that tied to our theme and executed this event- LT- you rock. We all gathered around the "fire" love seeing people realize Cocktails by the Fire is the furnace- not a bonfire in the courtyard - and again we were learning and being inspirited with a cocktail…or yummy new flavor from Velvet- celebrating their 100th Anniversary!! Wow!
The Dagar farmily is inspiring to me year in and year out. Last year at the Ground Hog Breakfast I learned about their natural process and ingredients and wanted to talk that up during this year's Cocktails by the Fire. Our Green Revolution- celebrate sustainability, enjoy local- theme aligns perfectly with their product. But they are so much more than just that and I love their 100th Anniversary is so apart of this year and week. The ground hog breakfast also featured the Grote family business Donatos. I can't recall after all the fun work in the past two days the exact quote or which amazing woman said it but I was inspired by both. I can tell you the goodness that goes into these business was what made The Works: Cocktails by the Fire work so well- we have an amazing family in this community and I'm grateful.
