Happy Saturday!

What are you up to this holiday weekend?  What a beautiful day….Clare and Peter headed down the road on bikes early - it wasn't a "leave it beaver" kind of send off - anxiety for the first cross country meet played a roll no doubt…..but they are off.  Joe's brother Scott parked his car and came in for coffee and catch up before they headed down the road- walking….Sally and I are headed north to work on HATSOFF! prep a bit, then I'll take her to an informal soccer practice and leave her with friends until Joe and I are done…..then we'll prep for some family dinner time that includes friends, we'll catch a Clippers game- first one this year!! YIKES!!  Monday will be about rest, pool and some friend time……Life on Newark-Granville Road is grateful for this three day weekend and the company it brings.

an amazing day of art, invention and the brain….

It really was an amazing day on Newark-Granville Road today.  My first notion was to post a photo I captured- they do tell a thousand words…..but I don't want to disclose too much! Frequent readers know I love my job and days like this I really love it.  I should apologize for being redundant with HATSOFF! subject matter these days, however it is fulfilling my life these days.  So here are just three very cool things that happened today……

I spent time with two incredible artists….actually four…make that seven artists. And my take away is that one is an awarded inventor with patents I believe all seven are- they create in the most inspiring ways to benefit.  We're interviewing donors on video for the Live HATSOFF! auction.  What a privilege it is to talk with these generous and talented people.  Each experience has been a delight and I'm grateful, inspired, touched, humbled. Today we interviewed two people. My first meeting was with Larry Tracewell- inventor, business man and I will say artist.  He explained that the caretta desk is functional art and I completely agree!  Take a look at the website below, read the stories- beautiful work, beautiful business- a family business that makes us all proud.  Thank you Larry for the donation to HATSOFF!  I look forward to showing you the video showcasing this wonderful donation and impressive man.

The second interview of the day was with artist Kathy Anderson.  She did a fantastic job- Kathy has been supporting the Works for a very long time. Personally Joe and I have a number of pieces in our home- 1st one purchased at Java and Jazz- benefiting Mental Health America by the way!! I've always admired Kathy's work so to be invited in to her studio was a treat.  The bonus was the opportunity to see Kathy start with a fresh canvas. She did this as part of the filming for the end product.  We interviewed Don Gunnerson and Jane Heller- amazing artists- an additional question is posed beyond the tell us about your donation- we ask the creator to talk about the process.  Kathy shared in word and action how she invents her art- I watched as a painting was created.  So I wanted to give my perspective but not give too much away……yet!

You also need to know we're working with great artistic talent with Stand Alone Media- I can't wait to see the end result.  That said I'm savoring the journey and grateful to be in the behind the scenes!! It is also gratifying to witness Chase, Garrett and Brie in action for many reasons.  They are kind and respectful, prompt, organized, efficient and fun. I've seen their end results for others so I know of the tremendous capabilities.

I also had a quick interaction with savvy volunteers- Emily Wilson, one of the HATSOFF! chairs and Kim Downs- an incredible coworker and friend- what they'll produce in the way of decorations on September 11-13 will be stunning!

The other highlight to my day was the way my brain works.  I awoke at 5:30 am concerned about two tasks I hadn't completed for HATSOFF preparation.  I admire how the brain brings these back-burned to-dos to the forefront!  I'm pleased to say I heard my brain and executed these to-dos by 9 am!  I'm grateful for a brain that organizes and assists me with event execution. It isn't an art or an invention like what I saw today but it does what it needs to do.  Life on Newark Granville Road is fascinating to me- thank you for sharing- please visit these websites to learn more about the talent I spent time with today.

back to school and back to the kitchen…...

Tonight on Newark- Granville Road we had "Chipotle Mexican" which means I put boneless chicken breast in the slow cooker with salsa when I went to work- put it on low and when I came home at 5:20 I opened the lid and shredded it. I moved the temp to warm and waited until everyone was ready for dinner.

Tonight I had thought ahead so I had green peppers, onion, lettuce, sharp white cheddar cheese, beans, tomatoes and rice. I warmed the flour torritas and everyone was happy and cleaned their plates, went back for ends.  That makes me very happy!!

Clare reported that she is eating other people's desserts and wanted me to buy deserts for her to take to school.  It wasn't my mother's modus operandi so it isn't mine- I'd rather fruit be the dessert.  But if there is going to be one I'd rather it be homemade.  So I said on Sunday I'd make brownies- oops forgot.  So tonight I ran to the store to get the butter I thought we had (because there were butter boxes in the fridge) so I could follow-through on my promise. Plus I was happy to be at home and be in the kitchen. Cooking for my family is a relaxing and fulling thing- doesnt' happen as much as I'd like but when it does-I value it as do they.

While I was at the store I picked up missing ingredients for another dinner- clams sauce on linguine.  While making the brownies with Sally's help I put the clam sauce together.  Another Jeanne Stoner classic that we all devour. Reality is it is better then next day so making it ahead of time is the way to go.  It is the New York Times Cookbook recipe- simple and light.

Tomorrow at work we're having favorite dips and chips- so a store run was required as I had forgotten about this highlight of Shut-Down/ Clean-up week! I'm keeping it simple and going with my favorite Chip- the green bag- El Ranchero Tortilla Chips. They are hearty flavorful corn chips. Joe learned about them at work and we asked Ross' IGA to carry them- you can find them in the Mexican aisle but they go fast! We always buy two- three bags at a time.  My accompanying dip will be a long ago favorite- cream cheese and salsa.

So there you go- Life on Newark-Granville Road cooking stories!! I always enjoy hearing what others prepare for their families so I thought I'd share what we're up to on Newark-Granville Road!

the ALS Challenge at The Works!

I did it- I accepted the ALS challenge from my cousin Meg Schnebly Cain (I love the name Schnebly) and I chose to film the challenge at The Works!  www.attheworks.org I didn't just film it there to promote a place I care deeply about, but because it is linked to ALS!

I believe with all my heart that cures will be found to ALS, Cancer and other debilitating and tragic diseases- but only if we continue to support and encourage STEM education.  The Works is and has  been about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) since inception and teaches STEM in a very special way- with ART and with the inspiration of rich History.  We have much to be proud of in Central Ohio and much to give and without a doubt much to be proud of in the future.

More about ways you can have fun and engage with The Works coming soon……Life on Newark-Granville Road had an icy shock today and I'm pleased to be supporting the effort to raise money and awareness for ALS!  http://www.alsa.org

Hope for our Tree!

Our poor tree in our front yard on Newark-Granville Road!  We planted the tree probably four years ago- maybe three and it has been outstanding!  It has been growing tall, striving to continue the beautiful canopy on our majestic connector to west Newark.  On Monday while we were traveling back a full force wind storm came up Fairview Road and woos went the top branches of our sweet tree!  Thank you Dena for moving one out of traffic's way and opening the road.  Thank you to others alerting us and showing concern.

Good News!  The arborist thinks there is hope for dear tree- he'll trim and guide the reaming side branch to reach forward! Not sure how that happens, I'm hopeful it will be successful.  I love the quotes and comparisons to trees to share beliefs. One of my favorites is "The deeper the roots, the higher the reach"  As I look out my window the tree looks solid- think trunk, good base. We will do our best to care for our tree.

Our yard has lost many trees- a walnut fell paralell to the house along Fairview Road years ago- I learned of this checking voice mail from the road. I was driving home- Sally was a baby- and a friend had left concerned message on the answering machine.  A big tree in the back yard went into our green house 6 months after we moved in- 20001!  All wind related too- hmmmmmm…….

The good news is the 2nd little tree planted by the village tree committee is doing well. He wasn't looking as good but this summer he has perked up.  The arborist that visited was delighted to see him-he credits the village with a good choice!

Granville is a beautiful village that cares for its trees and its population.  As we move into busy times with school and activities-I'm grateful for all the care and support of all of us growing here on Newark-Granville Road.

He who plants a tree
Plants a hope.

time for turkey with pirauettes!

It is that time of year…kids are going back to school, we're finding sitters, filling the calendar with cross country meets, field hockey games and we're excited for Thanksgiving!  What- turkey day you say?  Yes it is time for a traditional event we love on Thanksgiving weekend…….The COYB Nutcracker!!  Why are we thinking about a beautiful ballet performance and Tchaikovsky?!  Well this weekend are the COYB Nutcracker auditions!  All kids 8 and up are eligible! Have questions, want to know more- come to the 1 pm on Saturday, August 16 at the COYB studio- downtown Newark- on the 2nd floor above La Polma on the south side of the square!

Clare did this for two years and Sally danced last year.  We love the lessons gleaned from this experience, the friends she made from all over the county and the confidence she gained.  Life on Newark-Granville Road loves these opportunities and celebrates the wonderful opportunities Licking County offers!

back to the gym…...

http://maxfitcenter.com

Here is the link to the gym- I'm back into getting exercise- woo hoo! It feels awesome.  The day I was given permission to exercise- the boot was off- I took my tour.  Maximum Fitness Center is on church street- the red building in the old car dealership buillding.  Kelly and Tom Fever with another amazing partner have opened a state of the art, clean, bright gym that will appeal to everyone- spinning, boot camp, pilates-boxing- don't remember exact name.  I'm just on the bike building strength in my ankle but it is better than nothing! And I'm enjoying the benefits of more energy and a happiness boost.  And the bonus is I get to catch up on news- each cardio machine has its own tv channels or access to the web- wow!

Tom and Kelly have also donated an amazing package to HATSOFF! on Sept 21st! a year membership, personal training and other goodies!!

life on Newark-Granville Road like to share a deal and a find and this is a good one!! Hope to see you there!

History, Science and Art South of Newark-Granville Road

We're home from another awesome adventure and true vacation!  Joe and I had a wonderful time attending the wedding of dear friend Bill Knapp! We adore his beautiful, smart, talented bride Betsy!   They are a really beautiful couple and family. The highlight of the trip was spending time with a great group- not really a surprise that these good folks have good family and friends. This destination wedding and celebration provided an intimate setting and the privilege very special company!!  The bonus was going off the reservation-all inclusive resort south of Cancun!

We added a day to our trip so we could visit "the Mayan Ruins"- we didn't know which, we just knew we'd figure it out while there.  We originally thought we'd rent a car and go on our own.  To the co-worker that convinced Joe this wasn't the right course of action due to safety reasons- thank you.  Not to mention we never would of had as positive experience.  We ended up connecting with the resort's travel planner to hire a driver.  The driver put us safely in Tulum, a 45 minute drive south, and put us with a tour guide.  We loved walking ancient grounds and learning about this fascinating scientific community- Tulum is a seaport supporting trade down the coast to Honduras in its most active time of 1000-1500 AD!   The architecture, sculpture- inspiring art and science in this historic world!
We heard it was a "hot" trip. We certainly perspired but we found it manageable. Our total time in the walled city was an hour. Our trip coaches- fellow wedding goers- had told us about their day to Tulum that also included a visit to the cenote and what a relief it was with the cool water.  Who knew that would be the highlight of our day of exploration.

I had never heard of cenotes- say-note-tay- Webster definition: a deep sinkhole in limestone with a pool at the bottom that is found especially in Yucatán.
We have to strongly encourage everyone that visit Cancun to experience these natural wonders.  Neither Joe or I have ever been in a cave, in water like this. On our honeymoon in St. John we snorkeled in some caves but nothing like this- those were in rock formations in sea water.  The Cenotes are fresh very cold water in a very hot part of the country.  Everything was hot or warm on our trip- the ocean swim, the pools, the air.  We did have a very cold hotel room thanks to AC!  We hired a guide, rented our equipment- all thanks to our driver for the day.  The guide took us through the caves, around the stalagmites and tites. We looked down at formations and deep pools with scuba divers making their way in the dark.  The bat cave was the unique and somewhat magical and frightening endeavor- very tight space to pass- but we did it.  The reward a cave with natural sunlight illuminating part of the cavern.  Swimming under tree roots was nothing I planned to do but delighted in the experience! Nature is a talented artist and mother nature quite the architect. What a treat we found in Mexico- love was all around- friendship, matrimony, parenthood and the world a part of Newark-Granville Road!

the arts and sciences and getting to know "why"…..

I'm a why girl.  I do like the YMCA but I also like to know "why" things happen, work, are selected….I like to know the "why" about myself.  I also like to see connections.  I'm a connector- nothing makes me happier than introducing folks that can help, support and enjoy one another- at work or at home.

Our visit to Monticello on our drive back from the beach was inspiring and insightful! Here are a few reasons "why":

- A beautiful mountain top.  I love the Appalachian mountains- I knew of Thomas Jefferson's home and the beautiful architecture applied but I didn't understand the full setting. Jefferson chose the location as he grew up playing, exploring and appreciating it.  His home was on the other hill you can see from his forever home.  It is a breathtakingly location with gorgeous views.

-Filled with all sorts of fascinating things Jefferson did, used, designed, applied!  Beds in the alcoves, the lay-out of furniture for practically, his record keeping and use of science, the gardens!!

-Intentional- and smart- the walkways, the porches, the windows and light, the staircase, the art work

-understanding the man and leader. His wonderful contributions to our country- we have much to be grateful.  I personally appreciate the way he apples the liberal arts philosophy- art and science were combined so beautifully to achieve such greatness and impact! His value of education, reading and books!  What wasn't to love!  Here is one of the many many quotes I connect to:

Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing. Thomas Jefferson

-I've always loved UVA- the historic layout and purpose- what a gift from Thomas Jefferson!

http://www.monticello.org  Make your plans to visit now- or have a virtual visit- lots to learn by reading the website!  the house is great and a beautiful walk up and down!! The exhibits and store have their own delights!  Life on Newark-Granville Road is inspired from our trip to Monticello!!
