Happy New Year from the Granville Leithausers, May 2018 bring Love Peace and Hope

What a difference a day makes!  Look at that sky, although we do love the yellow stripe on the road, the red in Peter's sweat shirt and mild temps.  And for once a picture taking event brought laughter, smiles and quick results- peace!  Yes, making them stand in the middle of the road facilitate all of that!

Happy New Year from our home to yours. Life on Newark-Granville Road takes a literal approach to our holiday message.  Simple updates on our family:

Clare- our junior is thinking about colleges. She says she wants small and is undecided on career path. She did enjoy seeing mid Atlantic small liberal art colleges this summer.  Due to her busy sports schedule (field hockey, basketball and lacrosse) we'll make spring break our Midwest college tour time, trying to add something fun, like maybe a visit to Chicago?? Yes, she will apply to Denison but it really is too close to home. It is her journey and we're excited to support her efforts.  She takes her studies very seriously, she won't leave class to meet with colleges when they visit her high school.  Her Global Scholars track has peaked her interest in political science and international studies, but does well with math and science.  Clare spent the summer of 2017 at Camp Alleghany and enjoying quality time with friends and family.  Interesting times as she continplates what 2018 will bring- a family vacation without her?? Stay tuned to the blog to share the excitement the new year will bring.

Peter- our sophomore continues to enjoy being active. He and his friends started a business doing yard work, placing signs around town.  We are grateful to those that put them to work!  Summer included an extended stay in Hagerstown with Nana and Pap and skill building on the courts.  2017 took him from basketball to the pool, a contributing member of the GHS swim team.  Mom is thrilled to be back at meets seeing a summer activity move to winter.  2018 has hopes for tennis team at GHS- the blog will share the scoop! He and Joe found time to hit the links and Peter even manged to beat him once.

Sally- made the big move to the middle school this year and is doing great. She joins her siblings in the car for 7:30 am departures.  Field Hockey this fall was fun with our new neighbor joining Sally on bike rides to practises down NG Road at Bryn Du.  Her winter sport is basketball and 2018 will bring more lacrosse.  2017 had quite a season with a big win at the Ohio Cup end of season tournament and Joe coaching.  Sally enjoyed Camp Alleghany and quality time with family this summer.  2018 moves her into the teenage years.

Susan and Joe continue to enjoy their work. Joe wrapped up his first year at Infoverity with Next Generation Analytics and Susan is in her 3rd year with Family Philanthropy at Denison.  Both places allow us to engage with great people and coordinate fun travel around the US. It could not happen without family and friends assisting and carpooling, helping us enjoy this life on Newark-Granville Road.  We're very grateful.  A highlight of the year was taking in the Dead & Friends show with Scott and Ann Leithauser in Columbus. We made a full day more fun by adding it to the end of travel home from fabulous Stoner Thanksgiving in Orlando.

If we're not at home or work you'll find us at First Presbyterian Church, Granville Library, Denison and GHS sporting events, Moundbuilders Country Club, Newark Rotary or outside taking in time in beautiful Licking County- these are places we find peace and happiness.  We'd love to have you join us if ever interested.

We HOPE your new year will be filled with LOVE and PEACE.  We HOPE to see you for our Kentucky Derby Party on May 5, 2018 4:30 pm start, post time for the 144th Run for the Roses is 6:34 pm. Hats encouraged...more details will be posted here in April!

Thanks for sharing our life on NG Road- it is a special place to live, grown and love.

Christmas on Newark-Granville Road

This is the time of the year I should be writing the Christmas Update for the Christmas Cards.  We have joined the digital age and keep the cards simple- instead encourage blog reading.  That will wait, just as our holiday and end of calender year with Derby invite cards will wait. Good news- I can check off- "order New Year Cards".   That happened yesterday, after a successful picture was taken on the 25th!  We actually took photos on the 24th that would of worked and then it snowed!  Our white Christmas made for a prettier for backdrop and Eve all the more special.

Christmas Eve is the magical day.  My mother says it is her favorite day, she will call or now text me and say- it is our favorite day - and I do love it.  Why do I love it?   It is still the day about our faith, family and friends. We've enjoyed the preparing and now celebrate the ultimate gift from God. On the 23rd we attended a beautiful funeral celebrating a wonderful life.  A life that gave life, life I'm lucky to have in my life.  A life filled with faith and pursuit of peace. Saturday was wonderful time in the midst of holiday to dos to be reminded of what our faith is- a gift. A gift to be cared for and tended.  Christmas Eve allows us to celebrate and honor our faith as Christians.  And FPC celebrates it well!

First Presbyterian Church of Granville is a special place on Christmas Eve and all year round- join us.  Join us for Family's in Faith for Sunday School.  Join our choirs- boys in HS in particular!  Thanks to all who joined us for Christmas Eve.  I loved the 4:30 pageant/children's choir and then the message and music and the 6:30 service was just gorgeous. All three of our kids in the choir- and the voices. Lucky me- in the back ushering with adult choir members- we sang our hearts out and oh it sounded good!

We went home to long over due family dinner at home. Cocktail hour by the fire,  shrimp scampi on china, and texts connecting to family. Clare took me to see the lights as we ran an errand taking in the beautiful Granville snow glistening landscape.

Our Christmas morning had delighted children, grateful for their gifts- yay! Delicious and beautiful breakfast treats provided by dear friends. And kitchen time as we prepared for Leithauser Christmas in Westerville this year. The afternoon was very special as fifteen Leithausers all gathered- the sweet one year old on hand to remind us of the simplicity of the season.  Our gift exchange and dinner were wonderful and being together with Joe's family important and special.  Three cheers for dear Ann and Scott for hosting and providing a perfect venue for the crowd.

Christmas continues on Newark-Granville Road. We embrace the 12 days of Christmas and celebrate into the new year.  On the 26th Nana and Pap arrived and we again gathered around the fire place for cocktails, set a pretty table and enjoyed a Stoner tradition- beef fondue.  Beautiful gifts exchanged delivered from Maryland and quality time with my parents made for another memorable night.

Life on Newark-Granville road embracing Christmas meaning- faith, family and friends. Hope and Peace have been a focus this month, Love and Joy abound - a very merry and special Christmas.

December Festivities....half way there.....

I have to wonder about songs in my head- I wonder if others experience them like I do? I know I know book club friends- I need to read This is Your Brain on Music  maybe it has the answer.  Song titles often inspire my blog titles and directions. There are so many ways I could go for today's blog entry and pop- there it was "we're half way there"  and even better- "oh yeah livn' on a prayer".  I'm living on a prayer my packages will make it on time...Bon Jovis says- they'll make it he swears!  Ha ha...

What is going on in my life on Newark-Granville Road?  It has been 11 days since I posted and so much has happened.  A highlight was life off of NG Road while in the DC.  I had grand plans to share so many details. It is like I want to take you readers on these trips with me.  I so enjoy being in new and familiar places.  Returning to Maryland, PA and DC in my role, as an almost fifty year old is a gift.  But today's blog time doesn't allow to expand on this.  I will share being at my parents white table and experiencing their Christmas letter- to the tune of "I Love" by Tom T Hall was something I hope I never forget.  A beautiful song in itself and the inspiration and structure for their Christmas letter.  They gave it to me to read and Daddy said but you need to sing it....I tried and was wrong.  So he brought up the song on his lap top and proceeded to do it right.  A beautiful thing.  Mom shared details on the why and what and process and I enjoyed my east coast (NY Style) pizza while soaking in the moment.  Their words are beautiful, upbeat and positive- their year's beauty aligns with the song's intent to be grateful for simple pleasures and being in love.  Love is such a wonderful theme of December, their life and my life on NG Road.

So we're half way there, not really.  Regular readers know we celebrate the full 12 Days of Christmas, starting at Christmas.  We're working hard to prepare, get ready and sayin a prayer that we're there. Saying a prayer to be in the moment and love this crazy, full, crammed pack life.  We're mixing year end work, a new sport (Peter on the swim team), basketball and other commitments into prepping packages. Giving birthdays in December their priority focus.  Sharing my Mom's birthday with her in person with her first grand child- oh yes a treat indeed and worth any delay caused from six days off of NG Road. It was supposed to be five, but SW cancelled our flight on Saturday, we dropped everything and took the Friday night flight to make it work.  Hooray for SW and our flexibility!

Okay- I'm going to go make a list to help me check things off and stay on track.  I hope the music in your head is happy and festive and your day is filled with things and people you love...like little baby ducks.

Getting into the Spirit..feeling the Hope of Advent

I will be very honest- the whole "Christmas" in or out of the Granville Christmas Candlelight Walking Tour put a damper on my spirits as we approached the date. Both sides had valid points and both sides had representation that I found very disappointing.  Our beautiful town's wonderful kick-off to an important and special time of joined step with national events that are interesting and disappointing at times. At the same time it is a very important time and we need these topics to be discussed, explored and even exposed.  I try to stay positive- we live in very very interesting times.  I could go on about this but will not...instead I'll turn to this wonderful time of year.

As readers of the blog know it was a very good Thanksgiving and that prepared me to be in a good place this past weekend and excited to welcome December.   Woosh- in my life on Newark-Granville Road December arrived with fantastic festivities and lots of wonderful music and fellowship.  The sermon on Sunday at FPC was all about Hope and it resonated so well.  I hope you will read it- coming soon here: http://www.granpres.org/sermons/  Karen's message was well timed and powerful. I take it for inspiration and a theme.  Here are some reflections on the weekend with humor and reflection, not deep but real.

The weekend included a beautiful cookie exchange. Cookie exchanges can cause me stress- this was an elegantly simple cookie centered gathering beautifully executed for mother-daughters. Joe gets bonus points for picking up Sally so I was able to stay the whole time. I attended with Clare first then Sally.  The hope and idea of enjoying the cookies sadly vanished when Griffey made way with my box of cookies.  I didn't need the calories but still.  I've reached out to some of the bakers of the cookies I was HOPING to taste and I'm on the list to be contacted when they bake again!

Hoping to find a great Christmas tree our afternoon included a visit to our beloved Messerall's. Search for the reason why we go here, beyond there continued great service and offerings.   I blogged about it on 12-8-14!  Four out of five us set out in lovely weather.  Each year it is a bit different and we understand trees and farming require processes and land.  This year no wagon ride, instead a good hike.  The trees available to us were not as tall as we hoped, so we tried something new- we came home with a pre-cut tree.  I have to say it is GORGEOUS! It is everything I had hoped it to be...big, a bit on the fat side, soft, small needles, great shape, no holes- the only thing it wasn't was in the ground, we didn't have to cut it down.  We did take a healthy hike around the property. We did vote on the process.   The one who was unable to attend gave two thumbs up on the end result.   It did take us some figuring out to get it up on Sunday.  Joe and I had words, I did raise my voice- keeping it real- not what I hoped for but we both said we were sorry and we carried on...changing the stand, redoing the lights and getting life on Newark-Granville Road inside festive and bright.  Tree isn't decorated- hoping for a great night with all of us home to do that!

Hoping to enjoy the music of the season was an easy expectation to have met in Licking County this weekend.  With all of the rehearsals and coordination of who goes where when how for the Walking Tour performance and the Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra's Holiday event at the Midland- we hoped all would go well. We enjoyed FPC's Youth Choir so very very much this year.  Having all three kids in this choir is very special.  Joy Hire does an outstanding job bringing wonderful talent together all year long. The showcase for the walking tour allows us to clap and hoot and holler making it fun.  The addition of "Sisters" from White Christmas with two darling boys and the Plaugher sisters was just incredible.  This is a song my mother always wanted Sarah and I to sing- ha!  So seeing it executed so well by a family we share life on NG Road since we moved in was pretty wonderful.   Last night's event with the Granville High School Choir and Newark High School Choir joining the NG Symphony was certainly a delight.  Peter is part of the group and it was a treat to behold.  My middle child, my only son is growing up- tall and handsome and quite sharp in a tuxedo.  All of the students looked wonderful and sounded even better- a wonderful way to spend the evening.

The to-do lists are long, December brings additional work but so much fun.  I hope I can stay positive and stress free, maybe better said I hope I can keep the stress and worry about getting it done to a minimum. I hope I can be in the moments like I was (for the most part) able to do this weekend. I'm humming the music and smiling at the memories we made this weekend in our lives on Newark-Granville Road.  I'm looking forward to so many upcoming gatherings...it is going to be a wonderful month!

Giving Tuesday Giving Season

I love giving Tuesday.  I even embraced Cyber Monday this year and I always partake in Small Business Saturday. I'm not a Black Friday shopper by the way.  I was in the great outdoors canoeing with family, celebrating Thanksgiving.  Life on Newark-Granville Road enjoys giving gifts and shopping for Christmas is a treat.  I prefer to wait until December and Joe knows this.  Maybe that is why he asked me last night while I was focused on the screen texting for sizes if I was getting deals or just getting things done?  All the more reason to embrace today's Giving Tuesday.

If you are reading this and didn't make a gift to your favorite non-profit- there is still time!  A bonus this year was an organization giving to charities on my behalf!  It was such a great way to start the day- they allowed me to select from one of three and I chose The American Red Cross.  My father receives blood twice a month- blood drives and collection are critical.  All of the natural disasters this year- hurricanes and fires alone- the Red Cross was there.  And I post today to ask you, if able, to donate beyond money, donate your blood.

I'm donating blood on Thursday at the Granville High School Latin Club's Blood Drive- please join me!!  Here is the scoop:
The Granville Latin Club will host a blood drive on November 30th from 7:45 am to 12:45 pm in the Granville High School Gym. For more information or to make an appointment to donate, email Derrick Fisher at dfisher@granvilleschools.org or sign up online at  redcrossblood.org  with sponsor code GranvilleHS. Walk-ins are also accepted. Donors will receive a Buy One Get One Free six inch sub from Subway of Granville. The Red Cross needs donors with all blood types, especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative. Double-red donations are also welcome and very much needed! This blood drive is our way of giving our school and community an opportunity to help save lives.

Tomorrow at Denison- time slots are available.  Can't make it this week- here are other opportunities- thank you for making time.  http://redcrossblood.org/give/drive/driveSearchList.jsp?zipSponsor=43023&sd=112917&ed=022718&zipFormat=true&_requestid=145994#

We can all make the concept of Giving Tuesday be an everyday event.  We can give our time and care, as well as our treasure.  I know it is the time of the year when the "asks", the solicitations are as plentiful as the emails advertising Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  I hope Giving Tuesday's stories and testimonies were inspiring.  I'm inspired to share one of the reasons I give. One amazing bit of advice I value when it comes to making the decision, to give or not to give.

My father always said- do you enjoy the magazine from your alma mater? Cover those costs with a donation to the Annual Fund.  Do you like receiving invitations to events?  Want to be on the mailing list- make a donation.  The advice I share about networking or career experience- consider a non-profit volunteer opportunity!  Give your time and receive not only the satisfaction of making a difference, you can sharpen skills and meet amazing people.

Life on Newark-Granville Road encourages your giving today, tomorrow and everyday.  Stay tuned for more holiday updates....decorating coming soon!

Thanksgiving Stoner Southern Style!

What a wonderful Stoner Thanksgiving.  Dawn and Matt hosted us so very very well and we all loved the quality time together.   These pics showcase just a few of the amazing activities and outings we all enjoyed!  We laughed, toasted, relaxed and really enjoyed the trip.  I didn't know how much I needed a trip like this - a true vacation, 70 degree weather pretty awesome!

We of course missed trotting in Granville's Turkey Trot- Matt and Dawn gave us an almost 4 mile route. Some of us ran, some walked, some took a ride. A great scavenger hunt was part of the fun for  the kids- inspired by Forest Drive days!  We all were pleased to have this exercise as we ate very well. Dawn is an excellent cook- what a treat!

A highlight for me was our canoeing trip on the Wekiva River.  Hmmm river? I've heard about this activity for years and was anxious to see it for myself.  I admit the idea of being close to alligators and snakes was concerning and added anxiety.  The day's cons- cold and rainy, nerves, inexperienced canoers.  The day's pros- willing participants, beautiful setting, incredible planning and packed lunch of left over turkey sandwiches- mto!! The results- Peter and Mom had some learning time about each other.  Or maybe better said I benefited from seeing Peter in this situation- we made memories and overcame a rough start. We did not capsize but zig zagged and barely made progress.  No worries of wildlife due to the banter.  Once we found shore and switched positions, did some yoga breathing we were great!  The hurricane damage did curtain our access, but the day worked out fine. We all had an adventure, can take pride in our success and enjoyed the fun of being together.  As usual I wanted to be in two places- my sister, sister in law and Mom shopped and enjoyed a great lunch out together- that would of been fun.  I'm glad I shared this beautiful with challenges outdoor adventure!

Matthew, Dawn, Grace and Emma have a beautiful home. You can tell they love to entertain and enjoyed having us as much as we loved being with them.  They shared their wonderful community, favorite haunts, loaned us cars, coordinated every detail. We are all very grateful for a Southern style Stoner Thanksgiving.  My father summed it up- we're lucky to have a family that likes to gather and likes being together.  Life on Newark-Granville Road had two fantastic family filled Thanksgiving- lucky lucky me!

I like mine the old fashioned way....

or I should say, like to roast mine the old fashioned way. Life on Newark-Granville Road is roasting turkey! Yes roast, not fry or smoke, know me and know I'm kind of a classic, old school girl.  I admire and have enjoyed turkey prepared other ways...okay only once and it was an infrared prepared turkey.  It was moist and delicious.  It just isn't the way I want to prepare my turkey.   Although when I think about it the original turkey prep was probably over a spit! Hmmmmm......

We're hosting Leithauser Thanksgiving and I am loving spending time in my kitchen, getting ready to have the family together.  Sally helped me set the table last night and Clare made cookies for her contribution/favorite thing.  I'm grateful Joe hasn't expressed interest in taking on turkey component of the meal.  He is a great cook with some quite the repertoire- omelettes, insta-pot dinners and jambalaya from the Orioles cookbook. It is such a help to have a partner in the kitchen.  I just don't want his help on Thanksgiving.  Old school- I'll let him carve, not because I can't or he is a man, but because I have other things to do- like get the oysters in the oven and coach Sally on the potatoes at that time.

I love hearing about what others serve for their Thanksgiving meal.  I love sharing our traditions- sauerkraut, scalloped oysters are things that seem a bit different than others.  And I love to eat the full meal- I love everything that makes a Thanksgiving meal.  The menu this year on NG Road will include items that will hopefully please all in attendance.  I'm going a bit out of my usual m.o. to offer the buffet style T-giving.  We'll have two greens this year, not just the peas.  Clare fell in love with green bean casserole so green bean casserole will appear this year.  Peter (and I) love the peas- they stay.  We have a vegetarian at the table, adding roasted squash this year.  This is a nod to a Tgiving from years and years ago at a Great Aunt's house- I remember the never ending offerings that included things beyond my mother's usual. The introduction to cream corn was something I won't forget.    Of course the best part of the turkey day meal- the sandwich.  Hmmmmm homemade turkey noodle soup is right up there and the oyster stew.....something I forget about until I buy the oysters and always go for the quart not pint!

I enjoyed incorporating the Thanksgiving Farmers Market as part of my prep!  I was there at 8:30 am so I could get home to Mr. Turkey!  I made yoga this morning since no Turkey Trot. Two of the three are hope and helping with the last minute prep for company.  Clare's scrimmage is over and she'll join us soon.  There is much to be appreciate in the Leithauser family, in particular the Leithauser family. Life on Newark-Granville Road, old fashioned, happy and ready to give thanks.  Looking forward to a full week of Thanks-Giving, being in a place of gratitude and savoring family time.

Granville Village Happenings- Getting Involved

Joe and I recently talked about being more involved in our local governmence.  We define involved as being informed, aware of  important issues and engaged with those making important decisions. We're grateful to those who serve as elected officials and on important committees at all levels- school board, village, township, county and beyond, our zoning committees, councils, etc......We want to be intentional and go beyond Facebook and Twitter and a quick review of the Granville Sentinel to be knowledgeable and in a place to understand impact. We also want to have intellectual
conversations about important infrastructure and growth that is inevitable. This is our responsibility as residents on Newark-Granville Road.

To start we'll focus on the village council.  Yes, we live in the village.  Neighbors slightly south and east are in the township and not the village.    The boundries are interesting- not always what you think. This plays a big impact.  We learned this lesson years ago when we went to replace our septic system.  Past blog post- https://lifeonnewark-granvilleroad.blogspot.com/2013/09/real-life-grown-up-projects.html    Having the Health Department deny premission to install a new system that led to boring under the road to tap into the village sewer was indeed a grown up project. I learned a great deal in 2013 and have much still to learn.   Our water and sewar are key to our future.  Traffic flow is important- new neighbors were shocked at how fast cars drive and the speed limit- I remember being that person.  I remember being involved on the pathways committee and excited about plans to gain access to our schools and areas.  The Rotary bridge is such a great asset and I'm proud of our small role.  The kids went to village council and township meetings to advocate and were there at the dediction. We all benefit from the bridge. There is more work to do in so many areas.

In our lives on Newark-Granville Road, we are going to start being more involved by reading- reading the minutes of council meetings. Join us, here are two links. The first is general info about the council and the second are the most recent minutes available- Nov 1st. Timing is right as a topic presented at the meeting are five development projects on NG Road.  https://www.granville.oh.us/village_council_members/

Stay tuned for more thoughts and please know we look forward to discussions and meetings- in person or on the phone, not on social media.  We'll also do our best to attend future council meetings.

Planes and Trains,Cabs and Uber and Amazon Bookstore!

Life took me off of Newark-Granville Road this week to NYC!  It was a good trip- great work visits with inspiring Denison parents AND a personal dinner with a dear Denison friend.  As I reflected on the trip I found figure eights manifesting. I truly believe life is figure eight motion. We come and go from people AND places, repeating in similar patterns. Polarity management showcases the figure eights with opposites and energy created in the movement between and it is all connected by the AND.

Plane ride- I'm the one who likes the window seat to take in the scenery- the disappearing and approaching landscape and beautiful skies.  Follow me on Facebook you know I had issues with Delta's customer service but persistence carried the day and I found a kind empowered agent to help. I also love those darn Delta crisp cookies. I also have to say LGA is coming along and has much to offer. I'm always going to be true to Southwest- but when flying to NYC...what is a girl to do- embrace Delta?!  I also love love love a train ride.  I love the stations and the time to sit and think, read, play a game on my phone, catch-up on FB.  It was an easy way to meet my friend in her town and enjoy a great dinner!!   NYC-6:15 pm Princeton Junction 7:30, 2 hour dinner and catch-up, train ride home allowed me to finish my book- in bed and asleep by 11:30.....great end to a great day!

I love how easy it is to get around NYC- I've really embraced subways this year in Boston, Chicago but time didn't allow that to be the case in NCY.  Uber is my preferred mode- I love the email payments.  However sometimes it is hard to find the meet up spot and voila cabs seem to be everywhere.  This trip I divided my time with cabs and ubers.  There is something fun about hailing a cab.

Since I finished my book I needed a new one before heading to the airport to wait out a stand-by flight home  When I found bookstore options close to my hotel- Amazon popped up.  Being a happy on-line customer I was very curious about the real-life in person store. I had amazing service and found a future book club option. It isn't the same as the Independent stores I adore- I have my favorites in Boston, Menlo Park and of course Granville- just down Newark-Granville Road...but data and distribution fascinate me and that is what Amazon is.

What I loved about NYC this trip is the ah-ha about how well all those people- 8.538 million people in 2016- so no doubt there are more Nov 2017- live and work together.  It has to be one of the most diverse cities in America for many reasons. And a range of diversity and it felt so peaceful there this trip. It felt that there was a rhythm of existence that I needed to breathe in, feel.  On Thursday morning I sat and enjoyed coffee and watched the this NYC world go by.  More "And"  poor and rich, homeless and tourist, a range of religions and political views, sneakers and heels, and so much more.  All of my experience could be in competitions or it could simply be -Can't beat 'em join them and keep the balance, keep the AND instead of the Or.  Figure eights of balance allow me to love my life- here and there, on and off Newark-Granville Road.

Quiet Hustle
Found my Denison trip read!

Reds, Yellows, Greens and Orange.....seasons of change.

Swirls of color all around town.  Swirls of emotions in my life on Newark-Granville Road.  Here are the happenings.....
-late color pop this Fall. I wasn't sure we'd have this at all. The wonderful warm weather seemed to be a swap for leaf show.  Not the case- this weekend the reds, the oranges, the lush green of the grass provided a treat to the senses.
-sad news in church again, another death of a devoted member, someone who welcomed me to town when we moved here. A special friend's mother, the end of an era for this family. The gray sky set the tone and the color celebrated her life.
-I finished the book Dreamland, The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemicc by Sam Quinones.
An important read and as I shared with book club- "terrifying".  I thought I knew enough about this story. Joe listened to it on a vacation and shared key components. I didn't know enough- I needed to read it. I can't wait to discuss it.  Unofficial statistic tonight- 78 heroin overdoes in Columbus Ohio in a 12 hour period on Friday.  We have to talk about this and know about this. Stepping back it is fascinating, stepping in as a mother of three I'm so frighted by this.
-a creative, fun, literary gathering happened next door last night and it was such a delight.  Our whole family attended and engaged with our wonderful neighbors and their new friends, our friends. The hospitality was fantastic and after reading Dreamland, we recognized how important it is to develop these relationships as families with families.
-beautiful luncheon, gathering great group of women on Newark-Granville road- well done and thank you Kim and your front yard table inspiration to unite neighbors.

There are so many things happening and we're in transition time with sports, the seasons, my ankle, work and such...it feels like the leaves in the trees, in the wind, in the yards.  Family and friend time keep me grounded and able to embrace the beauty- I'm grateful.

Thoughts from the Road- Susan's recent Travels.

It has been quite a busy few weeks in my life on NG Road.  So much travel I contemplated a new blog...Life off Newark-Granville Road!  A travel blog......I do enjoy travel, sharing tips and tidbits, musings.  I don't have enough time to keep up with this blog, I don't need two.  I will continue to integrate travel reflection here.

This week's travel fun- Chicago! Three cheers for Southwest Airlines. I was able to go up and back in the day.  I like flying into Midway and taking the L to and from the city.  I'm not ready for Christmas but do appreciate seeing the prep happening at Marshall Fields- the big downtown store! I know it is now Macy's but it will always be MF to me!  I was flying home at 10, my meeting wrapped up at 6- I took a walk through this shopping mecca.  I didn't feel like shopping but enjoyed taking in the happenings.

I also traveled south to Hocking Hills for a work retreat.  What a delight to learn, connect with colleagues and soak in the quiet and beauty of this natural treasure so close home.  We stayed at the Inn at Cedar Falls.  This was my second visit and I enjoyed the meeting space and my food.  The lodge rooms are OK. I'd like to return and stay in one of the new Yurts! The cabins look nice as well. The staff are friendly and appreciate the business.  Our work for the two days was about gift planning and so fascinating.  If anyone would like to learn more, talk about this I'd enjoy the opportunity.  Not just gifts that benefit Denison, but any of philanthropy.  The great news about gift planning is the strategies to meet your needs- donor needs and interest- beyond philanthropic, good tax sense! This trip provided two reminders......when camping, make sure there is enough scotch. Okay we didn't camp, but we were in a camping mode and the scotch did come in handy.  And "smoke follows beauty"  camp fire fun was part of the agenda. We laughed and enjoyed being around the camp fire.  Said fire had a design flaw, but our fearless and dedicated leader prevailed and a few hours effort gave us a roaring focal point.   Thanks for the memories, learning, quiet and laughs Ed!

Last week Denison work took me to the west coast and the Bay area.  It was a quick trip and my schedule was full so I did not post this one on FB.  Again I love Southwest- the direct flight from Columbus to Oakland is wonderful.  The Denison Connecting event was very special- so many great Denionians helping one another and bonus 1990 Classmates were on hand.   Great to reconnect with good guys and gal and others from our era.  Bonus was a young alum who is very special- that was posted on FB!  Great advice was shared in particular - failures are important, almost badges of honor!  I enjoyed the time to connect with Denison parents making differences not only for Denison but their communities. Hearing updates on their young alumnus and student studying abroad was great.  Travel  notes:  The Double Tree Hilton- Berkeley Marina is a favorite hotel of mine.  I love the walking trail on the bay, connected to a park. I repeated from a past trip and treated my exercise with Tibron Toast in the hotel's restaurant.  I also was able to visit Swan's Oyster Depot in Russian Hill for.....oysters!  The pacific northwest half shells were like BUTTA- oh my! The clams pretty good too.  What a treat. Joe and I found Swan's years ago- a Bon Appetite Chef's guide to the city pointed the way.

I took the red-eye home from LA to enjoy a vacation day!  When the kids don't have school in October we've followed the lead and good sense of good friends to go to...Keeneland in Lexington, KY.  We were sad not to have Clare with us, or the friend this year.  Clare stayed home for field hockey practice- what a season- woo hoo and for homework.  The red eye was difficult- I've never been designed for that travel.  Arriving home at 6 am, I had to lay down- I needed some vertical time.  This put us behind our usual routine/schedule- arriving early and enjoying the Track Kitchen.  We did make it for the 2nd race and had a lovely day. Bonus was taking the country roads behind the property home- one of the prettiest drives ever.  We also had some big fun wins- Clairnation- fun bet to place and more fun to claim the winnings!  It wasn't perfect day- I keep it real out here.  The darn big car isn't big enough for Sally and Peter. Bucket seats/Captain seats in the 2nd row- doesn't prevent the pick-pick-picking and bickering- argh.  The race time was great, the drive down and back could of been better.

And that is where I've been as I've ventured off Newark-Granville Road.  So much more to share or reflect about...the incredible season that finally came to and end- the undefeated season met with defeat in the 2nd round of the tournament. I'll blog after the banquet.  Granville's Christmas Candlelight Walking Tour drama- sigh...Joe was surprised it was Columbus news...I'm afraid it may have made National News.  Stress of kids today.....happiness tonight was telling Clare the ACT test score tomorrow really doesn't matter.  I think she took it in.  It will help her path and college selection  journey but she is in a great place. And oh the fun we'll have on this journey....traveling off of NG Road.

Signs, signs, everywhere there are signs.....

Life on Newark-Granville Road can be very public.  Many people drive, walk, bike, run by and take notice of our activities.  Not surprising Joe and I are often asked to put political signs in our yard.  We came to a casual agreement and policy:  if the person running is a good friend or if we're working on the issue or campaign we'll put the yard sign in our yard.  We also limit the number of signs- two is pushing it. If Joe had his way there would probably be no signs.  In theory I'd probably put a number of signs as I like to engage in politics.  The key phrase being "in theory."

I hear political signs don't work, are not effective. However the perception to the public in our area is that they do work.  Better said, there is demand for signs - those running for office or leading a ballot issues are asked often for yard signs are told- they needs signs. I am sorry to miss a talk at Denison on Wed. Oct 18 4:00 pm in Knapp 204 about yard signs.   Politics on Display is the title, Yard Signs And The Politicization of Socialization of Public Spaces by Anand Sokhey '03- Denison! PhD from Ohio State and now  an Associate Professor of Political Science at University of Colorado Boulder.  If you go I hope you'll let me know and we can discuss your take-aways.  My theory is signs should inspire conversation, awareness and hopefully inspiration to vote!  Not the way I will, but just to vote.

Recently I've been asked to place one sign for the November elections.  Because it was a friend who asked, a friend who explained her reasons for running for re-election, we said yes.  I was asked to meet with another candidate to offer insights on important issues for the community.  We had a nice talk and she was very knowledgeable on a hot topic for me- sewer and water.  Sewer and water access is key to our town's sustainability/ tax base and the right thing to do- our public officials need to see this as a priority. I left our meeting wanting a yard sign for this candidate. I also like the fact we're endorsing two women in this race.  I admire all of the candidates running and am grateful for their service.  I appreciate the two candidates reached out to us and engaged us in conversation.  Consider this their reward access to our yard.  I hope you'll notice and think consider for whom and why you'll cast a ballot.

What is for dinner.....

Sunday night dinner....in church we pass a grocery list down the pew. Sally whispered during the hymn "can we have mac n cheese? " I said yes and she added the supplies to the list.  I serve it with salmon cakes- a Leithauser celebratory, favorite dinner.  This worked for the week's plan as we wanted to offer- smart food and salmon is brain food.  Peter and Clare had the PSAT on the docket.  (I read the blog from the  Mom with the three kids with perfect ACT scores- she talked about serving lots of fish- legit or not, I love the concept of building confidence.  We're also celebrating Clare's selection for National Honorary Society.  The big splurge- wheel pasta- her favorite.  To round out the meal, Graters and Jenny's ice cream thanks to IGA.  I usually don't serve ice cream with fish- goes back to my grandmother- but I was in a happy place.

Leithauser Favorite- Salmon cake, fresh broccoli, mac n cheese, with stewed tomatoes.
And just to keep you posted on the real life happenings- Peter blew out another shoe...can't keep him in shoes.  He even tore his sock at this basketball conditioning day- running. "Planted by foot hard and rip."    Maybe my home cooking on Newark-Granville Road is the reason for his growing?

Big Red Weekend 2017....tired and energized.

What was all that happy energy about in Granville this weekend?  Three words: Big Red Weekend! And for me- Family Leadership Council!  Yes living in our alma mater's hometown gives us wonderful opportunity to connect with Denison friends returning to campus.  Weekends like this take it a whole new level.  Add my work with current (and past) family and parents and I'm all the more connected to the opportunity to engage with outstanding Denisonians.  When they're parents and classmates- wham- all is right on Newark-Granville Road.  I should be exhausted but I'm tiredly energized.

Make new friends and keep the old, one is silver and the other gold.  I looked around the bar at the Granville Inn to see for 1990 classmates that are also P'21, three classmates back for BRW, a handful of other great alums I'm getting to know better thanks to their return to Denison as parents, and some fun alums back for affinity reunions.  Add the spouses of many of these said folks and it is a recipe for the perfect night! A night that flew, a night that had me making my way around the bar doing my best to connect and soak in these opportunities.  This was just one block of time that was repeated.

The whole weekend was this way. On Friday, the Family Leadership Council had fifty parents participate in important meetings. What a delight and honor to have these volunteers help the college. My role is rewarding, challenging, fun, special and one I'm lucky to have.  I am resonsible for the invitation to the council and the programming. I have many partners to thank for executing a successful day.  Our goal is to deepen the relationships- the relationship of the parent to the college- they are amazing Denisonians! Also to deepen the college's relationship to the parents.  BRW FLC 2017 met its goal.

It actually kicked off on Thursday with two 90 era amazing alums back. We met their kids, soaked in their engagement and caught up around the table. Ahhhh! Then the weekend provided a number of settings for introductions, reintroductions, witness to parent/student bonds and processing and a fair amount of nostalgic reminiscing!   Life is figure eights and BRW is full of observations and this year's convergence takes it to a new level.  I remember my parents weekends so very well. How we're now here welcoming our fiends as parents, makes me smile and shake my head.  We were just students.  Empathetic nostalgia has surrounded me all weekend. Just walking chapel walk with students I could feel their happy anticipation of parent arrivals.  Driving through town seeing the packed cars with farewell hugs took me right back to that place of meloncoly.  Happy reunions and reflection of just the past few weeks and decisions to make Denison home fodder and starting point of conversations.  This moved to just great talks and analysis about why Denison is in the place it is- strong, different but similar.  Seeing and meeting our friends kids, good kids is remarkable and has an impact to inspire the blog post.

Of course being in relationship, being family allows us to reflect on what could improve, what is missing.  Energizing is the suggestions stem from care and concern. The college knows and wants to grow and evolve the right way. Our Unlocking Potential campaign is in progress and launches publicly next week....time to rest up and regroup to prepare! Things are not perfect for all and I do my best to help.  I value the trust to do so. I value the assistance of colleagues to do so.

Thanks to all who infused this state of happy exhaustion.  I didn't see everyone and I needed to see everyone for more time, deeper conversation.  Until next time Denisonians and until then I look forward to the week and the alums and parents returning to Denison and Granville, making my life on NG Road so very satisfying.

Homecoming 2017...this one is for the girls....

Homecoming 2017- Clare went with three girl friends.  Low key year. Last year we celebrated her 16th birthday on Homecoming so that required a bit more attention.  Peter skipped the activities and enjoyed an evening celebrating a friends birthday.  The pictures are beautiful and deserved the rest of the story and "why".  I use the blog to document and share our lives. I don't scrapbook any more. I do print the blog - and I want Homecoming 2017 in there when I reflect on our year.

The dress- Clare picked her dress as she has most dresses- on line.  Her mother doesn't let her wear black.  Because her mother's mother didn't let her wear black....although I do remember the black velvet dress with a scallop neckline I bought when I was a senior in high school- probably my first black dress.  I don't mind black on others, just an option and way to keep her looking beyond black.
We don't pay much for the dress.  Interesting FYI this year.  I felt it needed steamed/pressed. When I took it in on Monday....ut oh- a stain?  She tried the dress on once and some how a spot.  Three cheers for the dry cleaner. When I picked it up Friday night- stain be gone!

Shoes- Clare continues to wear the same pair of shoes she's had for three years.  Yes the first pair of high heels, first pair of formal shoes she bought.  I remember it like it was yesterday- her running in DSW to prove to me they worked.  She wears them for pictures, to get to and from places, at the actual dance- off they go, into a pile.  We find a way to make them work- even with last year's gold.

Hair and make-up....the hair is done by the fabulous hairdresser adored by many dear friends. Lucky for us a dear friend makes the appointments.  Clare likes the curls/waves- she has looked at past pictures and I love her confidence and decision.  I do her make up, nothing fancy and it is easy with her sweet face and easy attitude.  Even jewelry this year was using what we had and it all worked!

We met Clare's group at Denison for photos.  And what a lovely group- her friends are our friends, her friends' parents, our friends.  Life is good. I needed to pop by an event at 6 and the group rolled with my request.  Chapel Walk's hanging baskets and wall, the white columns of Beth Eden and steps of Swasey gave us picturesque backdrops!  How fun to powwow with her friends parents, pose for a few ourselves and toast our girlies with sparkling lemonade.  It was a hot night- this heat wave seems to be more than an Indian Summer- but the shade prevent too much melting!

Clare's small group of girl friends went out to dinner in New Albany.  She reported that they connected with a bigger group of friends at the dance and danced.  Then a post party with samores and a fire led to sleep over.  All more than we ever did, did we have Homecoming like this? Joe says it was just an after school dance in his hometown.

Another fun component of HC is photo watching for us on Facebook and Instagram- woo hoo.  I love seeing the picture locations, dress selections.  My kids don't "date" so I don't have any "creative"invites or big groups and that is just fine.  Life on Newark-Granville Road embracing Clare's approach to a fun night out with friends- what isn't to love.  It seems hard to believe we're actually well into this. Clare is a junior, turning 17 this year. I feel like she was just  toddler and I was looking for the babysitters pictures!  Life on Newark-Granville Road embracing Clare's approach to a fun night out with friends- what isn't to love.

Ankle Diaries...back to PT!

So I have not been blogging much about the ankle!?  The last official update was May...wow here it is late September. And yes, I'm still working on recovery and full range of motion.

Current state- not letting ankle slow me down. I'm golfing, hiking, working, traveling....but I'm not back to me.  Going down stairs is the hardest.  Once I get going I'll do pretty well and not feel much discomfort.  I'm doing it all in comfortable shoes.  I have put small heels and even once great wedges on but not for long.

At a late spring appointment with my doctor I was encouraged to try something different. He thought I should be making more process. My approved PT had ended and I wasn't contacted to keep going with the Athletico team. I took the suggestion and moved to the PT group affiliated with my doctor's office.  I liked the care and new approach to my recovery.  I made progress and enjoyed the exercises.  That PT ended, the approved time frame and I was told- insurance or Workers Comp would not approve more and I hit plateau.  "All the best, time would help, keep up the progress on my own."

Wow. Hmph I didn't feel ready.  I asked a friend with experience in this world and and found some coaching.  The advice was to keep seeking care, he agreed with my gut and the advice I'd picked up along the way- there was more hard work to be done.  He recommended additional PT and a provider in New Albany.  I talked to him about my disappointment in not taking more ownership.  I didn't know much about the healing process and let the professionals guide me.  I talked to my boss about the challenge of being my own advocate without being a specialist.  However as I think about it  I know how to set a goal and facilitate progress- why didn't I do that in this case.  I did a bit but not enough!

My life on Newark- Granville Road is back in PT. PT with very focused stretches, exercises and care to break down the scar tissue and build motion in the ankle.  PT that started with questions and goal setting. I am committed to the daily work that this will require.  I'm glad to be back in yoga, adding work Pilate's and my cardio and strength at Maximum Fitness.  All of this is fine but PT is still a key part of the equation for me.  Six week, six weeks and I'll tell you more. In the mean time I'm finding time for PT.

More nights like this......

Joe and I LOVE family nights.  We LOVE family trips and dinners.  We also have always loved our time and our nights out.  So we're considering ourselves lucky to have two nights this weekend that have given us impromptu nights for ourselves.  Friday night was the driving range and dinner on the patio.  Bonus we joined a great couple and enjoyed dinner together.  This afternoon we played 9, then 10 and 18- just the of us....with a bonus....cart!  We went to the store and picked up dinner and cocktail hour supplies. The kids don't have school so they are in long weekend mode, the weekend's weather has put me in a summer feeling (it is the last weekend before Fall officially starts) so we're relaxed and happy and not feeling the usual Sunday night stressers.  Life on Newark-Granville Road tonight, just the two of us with scotch, appetizers and dinner on the stove (or in the instapot!) and we love to say....we thought there would be more nights like this.

So where are the kids?  Sally- lucky Sally is in Chicago with great new neighbors/friends- making incredible memories.  Peter is with friends and Clare is babysitting.

Fall Sports Fun- Go Big Red and Blue Aces!

Blue hat and a red fleece, I'm sporting my teams colors!  What is happening on Newark-Granville Road- sports!  Sally and Clare are both playing field hockey.  Sally is on the Rec's middle school team (6-7-8th grade) and Clare plays for the high school team, the field is at the Intermediate school. Peter is working on his new sports of golf and tennis, participating in basketball conditioning.  He is a great fan and helps us understand the plays.

Denison sports kicked off last night with the Men's soccer game and tonight we'll cheer on Big Red Football.  What a treat to be under the lights with great parents, students, staff, family and friend and tonight we get more of the same!  I stopped by the Denison golf course to support the women golfers at the Lynn Schweizer Tournament this afternoon!  I look forward to taking in volleyball, field hockey, women's soccer, and maybe even some cross country. We love cross country- sorry to miss today's meet at Bryn Du- fun to have friends stop by and say hey!!   Join me at any of these games, company makes it so much more fun! Find Cake at Tannicakes or join me on the golf course!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVvpXZxXWZU

Tina Fey's Saturday Night Live "Cake" commentary to Charlottesville, VA marches.  Charlottesville saddened me, angered me.  A bit late but here it is! I love it.  Simple- I love it.  And I want to connect it to this bakery:  https://www.yelp.com/biz/tannicakes-newark     https://www.facebook.com/TanniCakes/   Tina says find a bakery owned by someone you want to support, someone that may not feel supported by current leadership.  That is only one reason to support TanniCakes.  Her products are delicious and beautiful.  She is a working mother who is working hard with a smile and honest perspective.  Enjoy!!  Parking is a challenge but she has a plan- lets help her execute the plan.  And I'm taking Tina's advice.

Political responses on my blog have been limited as I have not made deliberate writing a priority.  Note I didn't say I didn't have time.  I could take the time- but instead I've been focused on my amazing work at Denison- knowing that work makes a difference in our world, this world and our future world.  I embrace family time around a table or on the side lines or ??In my life on Newark-Granville Road  I may not eat cake often, but I do swing a golf club- the driving range is a wonderful place for me to process what is happening close to home and at the national level. Please take this for what it is- my way of sharing something that spoke to me and inspired me.

Back to School Fun, Mystery and Funny!

Clare has asked Sally for weeks to make chocolate chip cookies on the day before school.  Clare wanted cookies to pack in her lunch.  We made sure we had the supplies, including a carton of butter.
Yesterday my big kids were on their own the day before school started. They had their plans, a credit card, and supply lists.  I had to work late but at 8 pm gathered with them to hear accounts of the day. I asked about cookies and no one seemed to say anything. Joe said- it smelled like cookies when I came home.  Listening to three reflections of the day, or better said, listening to Sally, while asking Clare and Peter (yelling up and down stairs to join me in the kitchen- it was an active house with lots to take in- not to mention enjoying a yummy salad and left over pasta!  I don't recall hearing much about the cookies Ask Joe about this and he'll say when I came home I said I smellncookies, asked who made them and the kids were quick to say- NO, NO COOKIES here.

Recognizing no cookies to fulfill Clare's request, wanting to do something for my kids from me, cooking is one of my love languages, I started to queue up the cookie supplies.  I noticed two sticks of butter gone- someone had made cookies.  My guess was:
a. they made them and ate them all, and then Clare said...Peter and I thought:
b. Peter ate all the batter.

Clare came clean- smiling- Peter made batter and tried to bake cookies and it was a huge mess, something went wrong.  It was brown and flat. We called Peter and Sally down and they all opened up about the tale declaring- but we cleaned up so you never knew!?!!  Life on Newark-Granville Road ah-ha- they are learning!  We laughed and chocked it up to fun times!  Hopefully they're also learning- we'll always figure it out. Party here? We cleaned up....

Later in the evening I dove into the task.  Wanting to get to bed but wanting the kids to have their cookies for lunches I made quick work with the mixer. As I started to measure (loose term with me) the shades of white caught my eye and I ended up tasting the flour.  Not flour at all- powdered sugar! A bag of confectioners sugar had been in the cabinet, someone had added it accidentally to the flour container.  So I put the butter/sugar mix in the fridge and went to bed - recreating my morning plan to pick up flour and bake.   When I went upstairs Joe was up and laughed at my discovery, asking...did I do that when I made waffles Saturday?

First day of school morning- when I woke up Clare and shared the news of the cookies- she went- THAT MAKES SENSE!  And giggled.  Sally nodded a sleepy nod and Peter said- I'm getting up.  Off I went to get the donuts and store supplies.  During our active morning that included Joe cooking corn beef hash, making lunches, I squeezed in cookies listening to the rest of the story be revealed.  Peter came down and clarified the story, again asking for affirmation of his good clean-up work. Joe recognized he had made the error with the sugar- joking he had sabotaged the cookie plan.  Fun and funny times in our lives on Newark-Granville Road!

Happy Back to school day...another funny may have been me waving my three goodbye, chasing the car with kisses as Clare drove all three to the Middle/High School for the first day of school- exciting new year that will be pray will be filled with more errors, mix-ups, successes, re-dos, lessons, laughs and love. Thanks to all who made yesterday a great day before school day and will be with them at school.

Friday- I'm in love

The 1992 song- Friday I'm in love- by The Cure is a classic. Not a college classic, I graduated in 1990.   It is a Joe classic.  Music of my early 20s is a blur- Friday I'm in Love goes to Joe.  When we were dating he made me this fantastic mixed tape for one of my drives. We had a long distance relationship.  He was quick to tell me the music was just that- music, no hidden meanings.  But I was in love or pre-love or prepping to fall in love.  I was happy with my work and my life and the icing was this great man to share time with on the weekends. I'm pretty sure I opened that tape on a Friday and I smiled when I heard it.  There were lots of other great songs and I still have the tape but I will tell you on a Friday when things are good- it is the first thing that comes to mind.

And yes this Friday, Friday August 18th I was in love.  In love with my life, my job, my husband, my kids.  Work was particularly good as we're in the happy place of welcoming the Class of 2021 to campus.  This is the warm up, the lead-up, things are full swing next week.  I valued the time to sit and talk with amazing parents. Parents that want to help, share their perspective, two in particular that understand my role and want to partner.  Days like this are amazing.  I enjoyed the engagement and partnership with incredible colleagues and bonus- I saw friends, Denison classmates this week.  What a treat to share a bit of their Denison 1st year student fun.  Friday night fun was dinner with kids, Peter and his friends talking about a book. Summer reading review to help the boys prepare for school start-up...okay- maybe that is an ingredient of my happy place?  Just a few more days and we're back in routine and secure care for my beloved three.  After dinner Joe and I snuggled up to a TV show I've wanted to watch for ages.....HBO's Big Little Lies.  I listened to the book and have been craving the comparison, visual escape.  It took some effort by Joe but he persevered and it was TV night for the two of us.

Friday I'm in Love on Newark-Granville Road....reality is I'm in love with my life five days a week.  There are ups and downs each day, but yesterday was just one of those lovely days at the end of a really nice week, cue up to a great weekend.  Summer love, just had to share.

Newark Rotary- Speaker Inspires and Delights- join me on a Tuesday!

I love Newark-Rotary.  When I made the work move back to Denison I thought I'd change Rotaries.  I  have not been able to leave this quality group of individuals, the local or international organization.  I'm grateful for the opportunity to connect on the Tuesdays at noon that work in my schedule with wonderful community members, friends and honestly the downtown Newark environment. It is good to get off the hill- although I'm always disappointed to be missing something at DU, this summer noon yoga.  And we truly have fantastic speakers!  Yesterday was one to share!

David Sabgir- cardiologist and founder of Walk with a Doc- a grassroots efforts that is expanding and doing amazing things for people.  Walking his talk literally- getting the word about not just about exercise and movement but why AND lots of other cool health tips that we all loved to learn about yesterday.  His blog was recommended as well- I'll be checking it out and following the good Dr's advice with water, chocolate, exercise and my cocktail in my life on NG Road.

http://walkwithadoc.org/who-we-are/

If you have any interest in joining me at Rotary- please let me know!  https://www.rotary.org
Amazing things happen locally and around the world because of Rotarians.  I'm not as active as I'd like to be, but I can help spread the word and encourage our growth.

Back to the Hills from NG Road

When Joe and I found our happy escape this summer we knew we wanted to share our find with our kids.  So when plans we thought we had changed, we jumped at the chance to execute!  Last night we went camping in the Hocking Hills- tent camping, all five of us!  Here are some moments that made me smile.

1st- we really did this on the fly.  When Joe and I were there we revisited the State Park primitive camp and found the correct site number that we had loved years and years ago.  We agreed this could easily be part of the plan to bring the kids back.  Well- today's reservations on line make being in the moment and finding a place to settle in when you arrive more challenging.  The night before we left, 9:30 pm there were were around the table, on the PC......we went back and forth about changing the plans- we thoughts about a cabin, even a hotel......but after 30 minutes we found the simple and easy and quite the bargain- riverside campsites.  Reservation secured and departure plans could be set!

2nd- We pulled out of town at 12:20- little later than I thought but not back. I was happy that thanks to a reservation and a new plan- I could enjoy my Saturday yoga, coffee shop, farmers market, day of planning for the camp fire meal!  We laughed at the fact- new Martha was packed tighter than we left to take three kids to summer camps for three weeks- were going overnight an hour away?

3rd.   The lesson of expectations low is a good thing, but visualizing does help.   When you think of an ideal camp site what comes to your mind?  For us it is shade, a little privacy, a good fire ring and picnic table.  As we approached our camp ground I had to warn everyone - as much for me and I said that out loud- it is only one night and we'll be find.  The camp ground was spacious with beautiful trees and green space - phew.  Most river front- where I thought I'd want to be- were taken but it felt like there were options.  We checked-in at a center down the road, returned and circled- the kids found it- number 140 was perfect for us!

4th camp set up made me smile. Although the kids were not overly thrilled about this idea, they found their ways to make it fun.  Clare immediately declared "I will go if I get my own tent".  She knows the tent inventory and that this could work.  She was the most prepared for the trip as secured and erected our three tents.  Her tent's poles were missing but thanks to Barbara's return- poles uncovered- the plan could work.  Clare took it to the extreme with her own tent and set her tent up in the "back forty" of our site. Probably not really our site- but it worked.  Sally and Peter took the BIG tent and declared sides.  Joe and I cuddled up in the original tent we've always used.  The kids can't believe it has held Joe and two friends on white water rafting trips.    I stepped back and watched it all play out.  Clare is so much like her father- each took to action and independently, quietly executed.   Sally's bossy side (okay note lunch was delayed and she was hungry, maybe hangry) had her leading the way, Peter following orders.  Joe joined and the tent was quickly ready-to-go.  We made the call of skipping the hike picnic and at our lunch at the table.  I had the table set and supplies organized to make this an easy call.

5th A hiking we will go! Joe and I had not been able to fit  in the visit to Rock House. We agreed this was good as it would pull us back to Hocking Hills sooner than later. Voila- there we were just over a month later with the kids.  Short, beautiful hike to an amazing Ohio wonder.  We all enjoyed this trek.  Not ready to be done we took the kids to see Whispering Cave and the new trail and bridge. They complained a bit but embraced the activity- adding an extra mile to Old Man's Cave- with the promise of ice cream!

6th Back to the campsite to enjoy cocktail time, fire, mountain pie dinner and all that comes with just hanging-out, outside.  I loved it.  It was a wonderful Saturday night for the Leithauser off of NG Road!  A bonus was fireworks someone decided to set off- the only real noise of the large camp ground.  The full location provided entertainment as we took in the neighbors- a couple on a motorcycle, a group of college women, a family with young kids and bikes, a family with a beautiful dog, groups of friends.  We could write a story, a screen play about it all.    Campfire time was family time and I loved it.

7th  We all slept as well as expected- some wake ups due to rocks.  We agree it is time to do air mattresses vs. egg crates.  The air was the perfect tent camping temperature which helped.  The rain in the morning was soothing and Joe was the hero to put every one's cover as we had loved our starry views at bed time.  We were a little stiff and feeling our age of close to 50 but pleased we did it, the discomfort is worth the opportunity to be in the great outdoors.

8th-home again home agin, jiggidy-jig!  Hocking Hills is so close!  We stopped in Lancaster for diner breakfast and were so pleased and delighted with all menu items- there was something for everyone.  A bit too much potty talk- do I live with 4 year olds- sometimes yes- but we did take them primitive camping so it was bound to be discussed.

The car is unloaded, the laundry started and everyone has showered. The day away was a treat for me and my life on NG Road.

Camp Pick-up 2017- another summer highlight and why...

Trying to get caught up on blog topics....summer provides so much fodder! I documented about our  Beach Week- timed well as I hear all about camp - camp Alleghany and camp Nana this year.   I shared what  Joe and I did while they were gone, what about the kids?  So here I am ready to  document for the record books Camp 2017 and the highlight- pick-up!

I love that this year's reality was hatched from a cocktail hour of a past beach trip. This year Louisa, Clare and Sally were all ghany girls!  Want to know more about Camp Alleghany- visit:  http://campalleghanyforgirls.com We have a nice Granville group and I can sing the praises of what camp provides for girls of today- the time alone without electronics is worth every penny!  Clare is always sad to leave, but this year- whoa.  She was devastated, we love the relationships that have blossomed.  She was set that this would be her last year, but now she isn't so sure.  As of today she will plan to apply to be a junior counselor.  Future blog material, fingers crossed from this Ghany camper.

One of my favorite traditions of pick-up is breakfast!
What fun to have Sarah and Greg with us.  We've made it the plan since the first pick-up to camp and return to the hotel for showers and breakfast before departing for the beach vacation.  This started just to show Clare the Greenbrier and now is a required part of the process.  Clare didn't need the shower this year but was excited for our breakfast.  Sally took the full package. The past three years we've loved being at the Lewisburg Inn.  We returned to the porch for brunch and had Sarah, Greg and Louisa with us- heaven. I was in absolute heaven.  Family united (missing Peter though), beloved and connected around the beautiful table with delicious food- what isn't to love!

Reuniting with Peter was wonderful too- we rolled into the beach house parking late and there was Peter-first to see us and greet us with a hug.  I love the happy, proud stories from my parents about his activities in Maryland. I'm grateful and pleased with all three of them- 15 year old boys don't always love grandparent time.  Grandparents don't always want three weeks with 15 year old boys.

Back to Greenbrier County- we also took full advantage of the last night without kids and celebrated with others in our situation. Lewisburg area has become a special reunion place as we've enjoyed seeing old friends from high school that send their daugther(s) to camp and new friends we've made through the old friends!  This year was quite the gathering in the lobby of the Inn, wide range of connections- all ghany parents. Cocktails and dinner gives us great place to pass the time as we're all excited to get to camp.  What a treat to enjoy a delicous meal at a fabulous restaurant with good good people.

Pick up morning brings giggles and smiles- executing strategy to get to camp on time- follow the instructions of waiting for the bus, but be poised to make the first barge! Compairing notes about how and where our girls will greet us.  Clare ignores us- always has- this year no different and she even sent us away- "can you get sally now, come back for me" she said choking back the tears.  Sally was our Sally happy to see us and be in the moment and ready for the beach.  I love supporting and sharing these emotional transitions with my girls.

Next year will be different, I'm stating the obvious.  Last year was different- oh was it with the floods!  I'm grateful to those that have included us in special outings, helped with reservations, shared  memorable family moments- camp allehgany family extends beyond the river and the girls.  A big shout out to the camp staff that execute incredible opportunity for our girls and us! Life on Newark-Granville Road is very grateful and treasures these trips to Greenbrier County.  Sally is signed up for 2018 Camp- she moves to senior camp, happy to say Louisa returns to junior camp and Clare....stay tuned!

Green in Granville- Pelotonia Week!

http://pelotonia.org  I'm not riding, nor volunteering, but we do support. We are grateful for all those that work to achieve the goal of Pelotonia- End Cancer.   And we're proud of Granville and Denison's involvement!  We've all been touched, some of us more closely that others, some of us more recently.  Life on Newark-Granville Road admires all those engaged and making this impressive and amazing effort such a success.  Life on Newark-Granville Road participates as we are able and one way is spreading the word and join us in making a donation.

It seems hard to believe anyone in the world would not know about Pelotonia but if you don't- please visit the website and learn more.  If you are in the Granville area and want to see it, feel it, be touched and inspired- be on Broadway to cheer for the riders on Saturday, August 5th**.  Want to join me - email, call or text and I'll share the details of where we cheer. Riders turn on Pearl St. to head toward Gambier and a rest stop hosted in Granville!  Routes are on the website- riders choose a distance and commit to that plan/ level. So many amazing efforts unite within our community to make it all work.   Lots of events have been leading up to the big ride to help riders and pelatons with their financial commitment.  This is all to raise money for funding, 100% of every dollar raised goes to research- incredible strides have been made in this fight, their is more to do.  I hope you'll find a rider or two or three, or a peloton, respond to the request sent to you by the neighbor, colleague, friend.

We can't support them all but we appreciated being asked. We love knowing what friends are riding and volunteering and being philanthropic!!  It also helps us acknowledge and remember those cancer has taken too soon and those fighting now. We're also inspired by the incredible fights those cancer have made. We know and respect all the other cancer related charities in our world-you can't help but feel good about the world and the desire to help individuals, find cures and prevention.  We made our gift and will make more on August 5th at an event hosted by friends to watch and cheer.

An event new to me is happening tomorrow, Sunday- July 30th 7 pm at Denison, Swasey Chapel. It is the Blessing of the Bikes and Go Green for Pelotonia. Swasey Chapel will have a green light this week. I will join this effort and say add my prayers.  My life wouldn't be the same if had not been for an amazing fight and incredible medical efforts for my sister. Sarah's diagnosis almost nine years ago still brings me to tears when I think about it. If you search "Cancer" on this blog you can read more about the why.

Congratulations to all involved in all the good work to get you to this point. Enjoy your rides, your journey, your good fights- it is working and we're gratefully green on Newark-Granville Road.

**there are other places in central ohio to see riders, share and support this cause...I just think Granville does it the best- pretty proud of our village!
