figure eight looping with camp!

Nothing feels like summer quite like camp prep and thunder storms- today is a summer day! Full and fun filled with amazing scents and feelings, activities and tastes.  However those have been distractions from the main focus in our life on Newark-Granville Road today of preparing  for camps!

Clare has done a wonderful job with her list and efforts- the last bathing suit was secured this afternoon and we do need a disposable camera but we're close. We can also mail her forgotten items and the camp store and fellow campers will fill in any missing items. She is a good packer- organizer- and Joe put her good efforts to use in assisting Peter for his departure next Sunday.  Nice to witness this sibling support in our home!

So Clare- going to Camp Alleghany for 3 weeks- it gets my memories going and not just my own from my time there the summer following my 5th and 6th grade years.  I'm thinking back to our tour a few summers ago with Clare and her interest in the tents, particularly the trunks! Christmas morning had a trunk under the tree for Clare this year and it made her smile that sweet sincere smile I adore. I wonder if you can check out the trunk in the photo- focus in- I love how she has adorned it with stickers-stickers that reflect who she is and what she values.  She has been wearing that smile a good bit today and had it on as we loaded up the car a few minutes ago....No doubt tomorrow will bring a variety of feelings and butterflies and tears for me and quite a bit to blog about in the future!

seeing the comfort.

I often find myself saying- funerals are for the living.  A friend and I were sharing preferences when paying our respect to the deceased. She prefers calling hours, I prefer the funeral.  She remarks on the comfort the family members give those that attend calling hours, when it feels as if it should be the other way.  I spoke of wanting to attend funerals for the living, to show my support.

Here is something I'm not sure I'm suppose to say but because this is a journal of such and I work out feelings and thoughts here, and you all help with comments and follow-up conversations.  I thought maybe I'd revealed this before, but it looks like I've only shared sentiments about funerals I've attended. But here it is - I like funerals. Okay- maybe "like" isn't the correct word.  Please know I don't wish for them, I don't seek them out, I don't attend them if I don't know someone or feel a true reason for attending. However when I go I find great comfort. I benefit from seeing families together.  Seeing friends gathering to comfort one another, honor, respect and celebrate.  I love being together with the Holy Spirit and worshiping, singing, praying. I like closure and funerals provide a bit of that. I value the learning that happens about the deceased and the family. Since my own grandmother's funeral I'm amazed and pleased with the comfort scripture, reflections and music provide.

Today was no exception.  Today the community gathered at Swasey Chapel for the: Celebration of Life and Witness to the Resurrection for James E. Barton.  Reverend Dick Ellsworth led us with wonderful explanations that moved us along. He confirmed things I know but found benefited in hearing.  The Unison Prayer- we're not to be alone in life. God is with us and give us one another - friends and family.  It was an intentional service with family involvement by all generations that was quite remarkable. Tears, laughs, smiles, hugs, sighs, prayers, stories and scripture joined together to provide comfort. Jim Barton's influence and legacy was indeed celebrated and his faith and our faith prevails and comforts.  Faith builds our communities and allows us to comfort and be comforted- a lesson I want to provide in my life on Newark-Granville Road.  I wish much comfort for The Barton families and all those that love Big Jim.  I'm grateful to have known Jim and am fortunate his family has made my life richer on Newark-Granville Road thanks to the friendships provided to me and my family. It was very evident today of those that were touched by Jim's big love of life. Alleluia, Amen.

changing plans....

I thought I had my day planned. I left the office with the "to-dos" outlined yesterday.  Joe and I coordinated the schedule.  I woke up and changed the plans.  I'm glad I did.  It required asking for help. I needed Joe to switch his plans so I could get a run in- a run which kept me on track with preparation for a 5K, kept me in a happy place and gave the dog some exercise.  Yeah Joe and his flexibility.

The day at the office didn't go as planned either but it was a good day. It is always a productive day when I get to interact with good people, converse and share, gather and give input.  I did check a few to-dos off the list.  I also ended up at Calling Hours and being with wonderful members of our community celebrating the life of Jim Barton.  It was the right thing to do, the right place to be.  This family has always welcomed me and treated me well- my heart aches for them. They are all giving to the community and their friends. Jim leaves a legacy. They were in good places of comfort and strength. We'll continue to support them as they process this loss/change.

The day did get to end with friend dinner and that did go as planned making life on Newark-Granville Road flexible and fun.

Singing all the way back to Newark-Granville Road

I love to listen to public radio in the morning on the way to work.  I feel like lately so many of the "articles" are things I can relate to, are of great interest.  I always think I'm going to be able to log on and learn more....tonight I did because I'm blogging about the topic and wanted to give you the access:
http://wosu.org/2012/allsides/narrative-medicine-how-listening-heals/   I found the topic interesting, but within the broadcast was the point about what shaman will ask to diagnosis-"when did you stop dancing, when did you stop singing"...and go from there about valuing stories and silence.  Those questions made me pause and reflect on the happy times in my life on Newark-Granville Road and beyond that includes dancing and singing. I'm grateful Joe and I find time to dance. I'm grateful we sing a fair amount for a variety of reasons and the kids love it too.  In fact tonight was a wonderful sing-a-long to the radio drive home.  As frustrated as I was when trying to get out the door tonight- Sally was in tears because her siblings wouldn't let her sing a solo (allegedly)- she ended up singing it on the drive to the swim meet and it was beautiful.  Recently with some girl friends we sang "American Pie" and some other songs from our era....I smiled so much my jaws hurt!  Hip Hip Hooray for technology that makes singing on Newark-Granville Road all the easier....Make sure you're singing and dancing as it makes life all the more fulfilling.

feeling like I don't leave Newark-Granville Road much.....

http://wearelongstride.com

Wonderful presentation/seminar this afternoon at the Columbus Foundation. Longstride's founder (website above) shared with a room full of nonprofit folks all sorts of inspiring tidbits and perspectives today.  Our purpose was to learn to tell the stories that will help us in our efforts to promote and develop our institutions.  We were given fun and effective examples, lots of inspiration and great coaching. I'll share more later but had to get some of these examples out there for you to enjoy.

I have to ask the question- did you know about these?  I didn't, how did I miss them...Okay- I did know about the the Dos Equis "stay thirsty" ads- I've seen them but it is sooo much more interesting when presented in the context of "telling a story" and some industry background/perspective.   I liked the ads but didn't really get them, now I do and I laugh.  Next go to Youtube and track down the "no more whoppers"- that one is old and was from my traveling like crazy with two small children phase- no wonder I didn't see that...and really I'm not sure I even knew what youtube was until fairly recently. This campaign is a fascinating approach to tell a story!  And then there is the powerful ad from Levi's- profit and nonprofit partnership- wow! New frontiers...There was a library levy campaign....I was almost snorting watching this one...http://www.metafilter.com/116987/Book-Burning-Party-to-Save-a-Library   Little too close to home from my own library levy effort days.....

These may be "htbt"s- had to be theres.....take a peak and let me know your thoughts or lets chat.  I was inspired and can't wait to share with my coworkers and Works volunteers.  I also had the ah-ha that Longstride was confirming the direction I'm trying to do with my blog- sharing my story with the why.....thanks for being part of my purpose on Newark-Granville Road.  It was good to venture off Newark-Granville and into Columbus, to be surrounded by other nonprofit talking about making nonprofits stronger in a place that celebrates non profits and the greater community we're a part of on Newark-Granville Road.  Thank you Columbus Foundation for a wonderful end to the working day today.

sleeping single in a double bed.....

Okay it is a queen size bed, but you get the point.  Joe is on a business trip. I'm the one who loves to travel- he use to and now doesn't. And it is one more reason I adore him.  I'm fine by myself. I spent years alone- Michigan, Omaha, back to Michigan and then Kentucky- it was what it was- I'm glad I had that time, I'm glad I built the confidence I have now and can hopefully pass to the kids.  However my preference is for him to be here- I miss him.  I'm just sharing some details about me and my life on Newark-Granville Road tonight...nothing prolific- just is what it is. I miss him as he is great company and processes and listens. We're busy and don't communicate as much as we should but we do.  He's a great help- the laundry calls right now- if he were home it would be done. I'll stop there...absence makes the heart grow fonder on Newark-Granville Road.

camping!

I've been anxious to share with you the fun of camping this weekend- the extended daylight hours time out doors trump typing time.  Thank you again to those that share with me when and how they enjoy this blog- it means a great day and was a nice part of my "longest day of the year" camping trip!

Camping at MCC is a true treat and here is the "why"....I enjoy camping. I've enjoyed it since I was a kid with my parents. I enjoyed sleeping in a tent- albeit a platform tent- at Girl Scout Camp and then Camp Alleghany. I loved our family camping trips at Lake Raystown in high school/college summers and I loved camping with my friends those same summers.  Joe and I camped early in our relationships...ahhh campsite number 4 in Hocking Hills.  All of my camping has taken place in lovely settings with lots of trees.  MCC is a lovely setting with lots of trees.  All of my camping experiences extend the time with friends and don't have much on the agenda other than- eating well, enjoying a prolonged cocktail time (even when I don't consume alcohol, childhood included- I love what cocktail time represents), looking at the night sky, enjoying the quiet of morning.  Camping at MCC includes all of these things and the most important- creating happy positive memories as family.

So some details from MCC time to help explain the why.  I need to give accolades to others who help make the event what it is. We've been doing this for 8 years now and each year is unique and special. Each year there are campers who impress and help the others.  Years past it has been Abbotts, Tells, Fords and Wilsons-each setting up their camp site with unique options like music, or impressive tents. Or delivering The Leithausers simply erect tents, put our belongings in and soak up the atmosphere.  This year James Houstaeu's tent made the endeavor so very picturesque- hopefully enticing others to join the fun on July 20th.  The Malishenko family became our hosts this year. They were ready- brought their own fire pita nd supplies, awesome chairs, table, lantern- it was so inviting!  We had a lovey late evening samore feast with music to set the tone.  Even the next morning Natalie provided delicious coffee in pottery mugs and donuts that delighted the children.  Thank you Malishenkos- we enjoyed the time together and your outdoor hospitality.

The other fun of MCC camping is the fact that my family and I spend extended time at a place we love.  A place that allows me to relax and enjoy, escape and vacation just down the street.  We arrived at 5 pm on Friday and left at 4 pm on Saturday. Okay I did make a quick trip home to walk the dog and go to the farmer's market Sat am.  The conversations around the table or campfire, or by the pool are not rushed and happen with all ages 3 to 90. Dinner and lunch were a bonus- my favorite soft shell crabs- I'm telling you I had the same happy feeling at MCC this weekend that I do when I go home to Maryland or gather at the beach with my full family.  I loved lying in my tent with the open air screen. Looking at the bright night sky-amazing moon this weekend and listening to the whispers and giggles, low chatter, crickets and snaps. So wonderfully relaxing.  It was the same in the morning watching the shade of blues lighten and glow. Listening to the birds incredible range of twirts, tweets, chirps and songs was a great start to the day.  The kids adore the time and make their own fun.  I enjoy the time with other family and other children.

It wasn't perfect and there are some snafus I'll talk about in future blogs but for now know how happy my life was on Newark-Granville with camping at MCC.

typing on the patio.....

Usually I blog from my perch at the antique desk looking out the front window- love that spot.  However tonight I couldn't be inside. I had to be outside as much as possible.  I picked up the kids from their golf clinic- how nice to sit in the shade and chat with lovely people including Clare- while I waited for them.  I made it home for a run- trying to keep on the training plan...5K will be here soon....eek that is August??  Then I cooled down and read the paper...the real topic of the blog tonight...but before getting to the paper subject I wanted to  share my surrounding with you- the literal part of "Life on Newark-Granville Road"....Being on the patio continued to be lovel with Chinese take-out for dinner.   I needed to check email, really just delete as much as possible, send a few needed notes/replies so I brought the laptop out here.  Is is one of the longest days of the year after all and one needs to soak it in the daylight!  It is 9:09 and it is light out!  Tomorrow night I won't be blogging- I'll be soaking in the long day at the pool- woo hoo! And then enjoying this incredible weather by sleeping under the stars at MCC- can't wait.  This is the day my mom always said would be a great day to get married- the day never ends.  The summer solstice.  The fairies will play and the great mounds with ancient trees will host quite a few I believe! Sally and I will lead the hunt, the fire flies will light the way.

Blog topic tonight-a big shout out to The Granville Sentinel!  What a delightful evening to be able to sit with Joe and just read the paper.  What a delight to see so many positive articles- literally.  The article about good people doing really good things at the LC Dog Shelter and on the baseball field! And what mom doesnt' like to see great young athletes adn their coaches get the recognition. I happen to know the wonderful behind the scenes mom and wife (april!!) that did a wonderful write up.  When Clare saw her picture she oohed, then she read the article outloud and paused, smiled and possibly blushed, when reading the details.  Take a look here:

http://www.newarkadvocate.com/article/20130619/COMMUNITIES02/306190015/Granville-girls-lacrosse-team-breaks-new-ground-state-tournament
but go further-a log on or pick up a paper to read about Shelley Meyers and Steve Doty too. Well done Chuck and Sentinel staff.

I hope you enjoy these extended hours of sunlight, the cool evening happy summer opportunities as we are on Newark-Granville Road tonight.

Time to get a Mammogram....

yes an exciting topic- but an important one.  I left the house bright and early for my 7 am mammogram appointment. Happy to be crossing this off my list, wanting to blog about the experience to help encourage others to remember to do this.  Breast Cancer is all around and early detection is key. I arrived and no luck- I didn't have the right paperwork with me.  I looked for it- it has been on my desk and in key places with me for months...finally I scheduled the appointment and hoped all would be OK without it as I've been doing this for a few years.  They couldn't of been nicer about not having it and needing to reschedule. I rescheduled for tomorrow morning and went home.  I found the paperwork/script. I faxed it- actually a coworker helped me- fax machines and I don't get along- and they confirmed all is good. So tomorrow 7 am my life in Newark-Granville Road will be about keeping me healthy and happy to have checked-off this important to-do.

keeping the berries going!

Last night was strawberry shortcake, tonight strawberry shortcakes with roasted strawberries! I tasted roasted strawberries at Jeni's in Bexley and sure enough- pintrest gave me the recipe. Joe's says he likes the dessert with the roasted berries better than last night- I'm not there but it is good.  I do think using the roasted fruit on an appetizer with cheese will be pretty darn good, or possibly on a bagel with cream cheese.....I got the berries sliced and into their next phase at just the right time.  There were quite a few I had to pitch due to mush- no mold yet - phew!  Kids have had their fair share of simple eating from the baskets and that thrills me. June is a sweet strawberry month on Newark-Granville Road!

loving fathers......

So it is Father's day on Newark-Granville Road and I'm behind and I feel badly.  The Leithausers don't make hoo-has of holidays or better said special occasion days. The Stoners celebrate a bit more but keep it pretty simple. However days like this make me miss being able to drop off a card in person, make dinner for my parents and give my Dad a hug.  This year I did get a good card out to my mom on time...not the case for my Dad.sorry...but the book we've talked about it on it's way though!! You know my lack of on time gift delivery or card doesn't reflect how much I love, respect and appreciate you Daddy.  The picture above left is from a family photo shoot in 2008.  The beach photo sits on my desk and I adore- same situation- family photo shoot at the beach in 2011-Matthew, Mike, Greg and Joe.

Anyway I thought I'd take the time to share some sentiments, document it in my on-line journal of sorts...you know that is one of the reasons I blog- documenting things for the future. I've never been very good at keeping a journal going with this much regularity. And certainly some thoughts about my Dad and my husband- my children's Dad is a worthy entry.  So here to you, forgive me if I've blogged about this before- it is feeling familiar in my head but I didn't see anything as I scanned the past entries.

So many people say Joe and my Dad (Michael Watson Stoner) look a like- you know the old- you married your Dad kind of thing.  The funny thing is we think my brother in law- Greg- looks like my Dad as well- similar mannerism make it even more so.  And yes Matthew's darling wife resembles my mom- but today it is about the Dads.  The reality is I did marry someone quite like my father because my Dad and Joe are both very committed to their kids. Both Joe and Dad love their wives and the mother of their children and show their children that through word and action in intentional ways.  Both of these great men have made family a priority and careers allow quality family time. This is a good thing not only for me but my kids- they get not only a great Dad but a great Pap!  The better news is Joe's Dad is a wonderful Dad too so we're surrounded by wonderful fathers.  They both like blue grass music and good food and their wives cooking.  They like sports and enjoy sharing that love with Peter- makes for fun conversations when we are together. They both were collegiate athletes- yes Joe played JV at basketball at Denison and Daddy swam at Virginia Tech, at Mercersburg was All American. They like cross word puzzles and brain teasers. They take their kids camping (kids are sleeping out tonight on Newark-Granville Road in prep for MCC family camp out this week!!) I could go on and on but will wrap up tonight's blog. In closing-yes, they do look a like outside and inside and it is a very good thing for my life on and off Newark-Granville Road.

back to the strawberry patch!

love to pick strawberries. I love to pick fruit and we've done a fair amount of that while living on Newark-Granville Road. Legend Hills in Utica is a great destination for this activity- strawberries in particular.  A friend asked me this week- have you been to Legend Hills yet? I replied no and she said- what- you're that kind of Mom- I'm surprised you haven't made it up there yet.  That is all it took- she's right. I am that kind of Mom.  When I looked back to find a photo from past quests for the red berries I found a few that made me smile.  The VBS shirts align with the timing of strawberries- often we'd go pick directly from VBS.

So this blog is about the why....why do I like to pick them?  Well I love the taste- love to eat them right there in the field when they're warm from the sun.  This year the reward was  very sweet berries and pretty big ones too- more on that later.  Love the fresh real flavor that you only get from local fruit. I love that we have to work a bit to bring home our food.  I love to support the farmers that are allowing us this gift to be in their fields and offer a hands-on learning activity.  I also love to be out in all that natural beauty- look at those blues and greens in the photos- the red bursts the perfect accents.  I also love the challenge. I start with an empty bucket and  have to fill it up and it gets to be a little addictive. I fill another one and regret not bringing another. I look for the biggest I can find, I don't want a lot of little ones...then I think about what I am going to do with all that is procured and I slow down...but I can't help myself as I come down from the hill I spy another real red, pretty big and I stoop to pick. I walk on- a cluster calls to me and I take the steps left and kneel to add to my lot....but duty calls and we have to get home.  Later when cleaning them and preparing next steps takes over an hour I'm glad I had a day that pulled me home and I'm glad I don't have too many tiny ones.  The plans for these babies- strawberry short cake- short cake made from flour and is more biscuit than cake- yum.  I like mine with milk not whipped cream, maybe I'll splurge and by cream....I put a number in the freezer for smoothies. I don't make jam.  I will try to do some roasted for a sauce...Jeni's inspired me....So that is they why about today's very fun traditional June activity in my life on Newark-Granville Road.

Bonus- the drive- love a ride in the country- in the convertible as bonus! Today we were behind a horse and buggy. I love the shadow that was cast and how it was in motion- I think of shadows as stationary things for some reason. I was struck by the simplicity of the spoke and wheel's movement, the horse's jaunts.  Beauty all around in this life and today it was everywhere!

has chocolate chip cookies......

Many of you know we've had our sitter challenges this year. I also want you to know we've had amazing ones along the way and currently do too- woo hoo!  It is VBS week and little things are needed along the way, coins for amazing effort to support Janet Greggory, a rock to paint and cookies for the wrap up picnic.  I had every plan to just buy cookies- boy am I glad a I didn't.  Without any prompting to me our sitter yesterday figured out the cookie need and so she and Sally baked chocolate chip cookies yesterday!

When I came home after a really wonderful day yesterday- there they were and boy they tasted good.  I'm so grateful for this new sitter in our lives for many reasons beyond cookies.  The care, sharing, identifying of a need represents the way this sitter has interacted with our kids from day one!  Our other sitter has been with us for years and is doing wonderful things with her life. I'm so grateful she jumped right back into our summer routines handling the crazy schedules like an air traffic controller- calm, cool and collected- relieving so much of my stress.

It has been a very good week.  Today's running song that took me to a very happy place is "Friday I'm in Love" The Cure! It is an all time favorite for many reasons and was perfect.  The week has had some ups and downs but love carries us through on Newark-Granville Road.

with and without Coffee

Another simple blog update....my brain just isn't in a place to dig deep. I also want to keep a balance of Susan rambling about her personal happenings and fyis about what is happening in our community and why I am placing it out here in cyber world.  So today I will talk about coffee.  Coffee plays a key place in our lives on Newark-Granville Road.  We're not fancy- we have a basic 12 cup coffee maker.  We don't get the one cup thing that is so hot right now.  We added a bean grinder this year and I think it does make better coffee.  We like to buy Dunkin Donuts Coffee, but the reality is we usually buy what is on sale.  We like a darker roast and I know we should really be finding a free trade coffee like what is avaiable at church or River Road.  We make coffee 3 or 4 times a week.  The other days we.....

1. Stop at Whit's.  Joe enjoys this ritual and occasionally when I really need coffee will do this too. Yesterday I never got coffee.  This isn't a day breaker for me, but my days always go a little better when coffee is in the start-up equation.
2. Stop at River Road- this is a huge treat for all of us.  The kids LOVE coffee shop runs and it is a sure way to get them out of bed.  They were raised there.  When I wasn't working it was part of the get out of the house for the stay at home mom.  Post exercise we'd go over...ahhh great times.  The kids still have their favorites- Peter's Medium Hot Chocolate with Whip Cream, Kid Temp makes him happy. And I have to say it is a great hot chocolate- rich with deep flavor but drinkable.  The girls like the smoothies- although Clare has moved to juice more. They also love the bagels...everything toasted with cream cheese.  Clare isn't loving the cookies since a change and for some reason isn't as drawn to the chocolate muffins as she use to be...her palate is advancing?  I adore the crisp well balanced biscotti- a treat every now and then...the olive oil ones are a savory treat.  Oh and back to the coffee..I get a latte- always Med- perfect balance. Sometimes I do soy, I love when I remember to ask for the amazing organic milk and always skim. Joe does tall dark roast no room for cream.

I love the whole coffee house/Batista culture that is now part of every community.  I love the decorative foam touch- hears make me smile.  I love the vocabulary and acronyms and meeting for coffee opportunities.

2b- drive through River Road....so nice to have this opportunity and it is on my way to work...love to take Granville Road into town, see the kids in their uniforms and the old houses.

3. Simply Rising Cafe- downtown coffee shop with amazing owners- everything is personalized and presented with care- the steamed milk on top of my latte is like butta......great place for lunch too!

4.The Sparta- Another great place to get great coffee that is free trade. This is also an amazing breakfast and lunch spot. Chris is doing wonderful social entrepreneurship work here plus keeping a historic special place happening- it is worth the tiny extra effort to stop here in the morning and a great place to meet folks.

5. Village Coffee in the Village of Granville....always something yummy- the Cinnamon roll muffin yum! I also love their Chai- afternoon pick me up!

6. I will do Caribou when I'm out that way and need a drive thru.....

That about covers the coffee...it is on my mind as I said- didn't get any yesterday.  If I arrive at work sans coffee I can usually make my way to the kitchen and Justin or Mr. Mike have it ready to go- such a treat.  And every now and then we luck out with coffee upstairs thanks to Jenna or those morning meetings....

And the last thing I'll say is I always prefer my coffee in porcelain. I really don't like it in Styrofoam, can do it in paper.  I'm not crazy about sippy cup lids and if you check my desk you'll find the collection of what I've used that week- the Lilly P cups are my favorite when traveling from home- right size, pretty, the thickness is just right.  Life on Newark-Granville Road enjoys coffee is better with coffee. It is best when shared with a friend.

needs Vacation Bible School

I love Vacation Bible School...no doubt I've blogged about this before.  It is hard not to be involved as I've spent a fair amount of time helping make it happen.  The best part of Granville's Ecumenical VBS- churches come together and make it work. Resources and efforts are pulled to unite us in our Christian faith. The promises of baptism radiate out during this week and the first newsletter home didn't disappoint.

Sally is our only VBS Leithauser kid but lots of wonderful community kids are involved.  It was awesome to hear Sally rattle off the names of kids she is seeing in this way.  I also loved hearing from friends that their older children are helpers!    The verse that made its way to me was summed up well by Sally's chatter: "Serve one another in love" Galatians 5:13 b and "Love the Lore God with all your heart, mind soul and strength" Mark 12:30.  Thanks to all involved to make this week happen to enhance not just our lives but many on Newark-Granville Road.

We all get pulled in many directions but boy life is better when we listen and apply this message.  I'm here to help others as I can and boy do I appreciate when others help me.  Tonight the coach waiting with Peter in the rain as I did the Newark-Granville Shuttling and other helping me make sure MCC swim team will fit into our crazy lives.   The Italian market who usually serves me during off hours.  What fun to talk with Sally about serving and have her see it in action all around our lives on Newark-Granville Road.  I have a good feeling lots of good lessons will continue this week- I'm ready.

what do the cows do.....

So I have not conducted a scientific study with empirical and measurable evidence but I'm feeling confident in saying: if cows are laying down, it does not predict rain.  I do hope you grew up hearing what I always heard...if you see cows laying down, it means rain.  I had many a Sunday drive, a drive to school through the country and would observe cows up and down in both fair and inclement weather conditions.

For whatever reason this week has allowed me to notice our cow's patterns connected to the weather.  They're really not our cows but we do feel a connection since they are down the street and we seem them often, and smell and hear them not quite as often (thank goodness).  Griffey and I have done our morning runs and noticed- cows laying down and guess what- no rain.  Tonight while walking the dog - in the rain- I share with you- cows were standing up.  In fact they were not only standing up they were shuffling, even frolicking.

Life on Newark-Granville Road is pleased we are able to share this information. The cows keep us connected to the country life and agricultural industry we value in both Joe and my family and personal histories.  Future blogging material no doubt!

good place to be

While driving back to Newark-Granville Road from Hillard this aftnernoon I was teary listening to Clare call my parents, then Joe to share the good news- her tourney lax team won two games today and should be going back to play tomorrow!  The pure happiness, the pride, the tired enthusiasm poured into the world.  Clare is in this place due to her own hard work- getting to practices on her bike, listening and applying the lessons of her coaches.  Instrumental has been the support and work of many.  I love team sports and what they teach our kids.  I love the camaraderie it provides- I'm a terrible play date mom with three kids going their directions, my own work and volunteerism- it is hard to make that happen.  I'm grateful to coaches and families of the coaches and the behind the scene organizers.  The other parents that make spending five and half hours together such a lovely experience.

However it goes beyond just happy to be doing it- it is fun to be in those moments. Today was a great day.  Getting to just hang out with a whole bunch of nice, hard working healthy families, in the sunshine, in the grass- I was barefoot most of they day. We watched, we cheered, we chatted, we encouraged one anothers children and our community- only Granville group out there - I wore my blingy blue ace with pride.  How fun it made its way to my hands this am- havent' thought about this shirt in ages.  The coaches have worked hard and their faces beamed with pride too.... Last night they lost but they played well and they were all pleased to be competing at this level. Joe and Clare had quality daddy/daughter time over dinner too.  I'm proud of Clare being able to articulate and understand the accomplishments. The wins were deserved and we're in a good place.

(curious what is going on with the other kids on Newark-Granville Road...Peter's baseball team- which I could be writing about above as well- is competing in the Shrine- Joe is there with Sally.  I was in a good place last night as well, watching his team compete. It was a tough loss but still a place of learning and activity and support that I value.)

is alive with the arts!

Shout out to PNC and their support of the Arts. It was a treat to be on hand for the announcements of the PNC Arts Alive Grant Recipients this week. The Works has benefited in the past as we've partnered with The Midland and the Newark-Granville Symphony.  I'm a fan of the arts and how much richer our lives are when our brains create, escape, re-think, soothe, question and enjoy in only ways the arts can stimulate!  So thank you PNC!

That said- it is a weekend full of the arts in our communities.  The Columbus Art Festival is happening and The Works glass artist is there- Lawrence Tuber!  Down the street the Granville Art Festival- Kathy Anderson, Tony Reynold, Pearly Vine are my favs...and when driving to work today- Knit Bombers did a number on a bike and tree - so so fun and happy and artistic....and metal worker made a horse on the lawn of the Baptist/UCC church...it made me smile to see the arts surrounding me in life on Newark-Granville Road!

appreciates readers!

Thank you for reading my blog.  I value the input I've received lately. It is nice to know you are out there.  I also enjoy knowing when our lives intersect- coffee in the morning while a child has breakfast, wrap up of the day...even from Dublin.  I appreciate the data Blogger provides and the feedback about the ways you connect- facebook the most popular.  I need to figure out more connections from other social media sites too....I truly am grateful that you are sharing my life on Newark-Granville Life.

I look forward to connecting with you in real life ways too- lots of fun events coming up this weekend!! The Columbus Art festival is another that is worth a shout-out- I won't be there but I am looking forward to baseball with Peter, Lax with Clare (Ohio Cup), some Bryn Du art and wine (and Matesich beer!) and The NG Symphony event on Saturday night!

Also Young Eagles has their free flights for 8 to 18 year olds on Saturday from 9 to 12...this year this ties to the Works efforts with aeronautics and STEMfest 2014....plus it is just cool! Clare and Peter have done it a few times...the big question...will Sally be airborne....I'll let you know.  Life on Newark-Granville Road has so much to offer but it is all the richer when you share it with me. Warmest wishes for a great end to your week and kick-off to your weekend!

Times have changed.....

Wow- there is a lot to do in our larger community.....I went on to the Columbus parent magazine best of Columbus ballot and didn't know two thirds of the places nominated!! Take a look...maybe I need to get off Newark-Granville Road and into Columbus a bit more.....in the mean time please do vote for The Works- it is a great place and we need all the help we can get in the Columbus market....love when people from beyond our lovely corner find The Works- they're always so pleased they did!  The Works stays vibrant thanks to lots of visitors- admissions dollars- members, donors.  The Works is a great secret and it is time to let the secret out- this is a great way!  Let others know too and vote daily!!

Do Over Day

So yesterday I didn't sit very loosely in the saddle of life...my mantra...in fact I stood on top of the saddle and yelled- yes me.  It was one of those days that every turn things didn't go as planned and it bummed me out. It shouldn't of - everyone was safe and found, others were rolling with it well. It wasn't one thing or child or task...all together...all day....I did get a lovely chance to sit and chat with work friends and that was delightful. I did get great interaction with a professor and intern in a special part of the museum and I had a great morning seeing Peter back in the gym and connecting with a friend.  I read some incredible updates from traveling friends- but all that goodness didn't carry me when it was time to roll with my crazy pulled in to many directions life- sigh.

So today is a do over day.  Today I cried as I shared my concerns, I went for a beautiful run and made a list.  I listened to the song- catchy tune, nice pace and words that are simple:  "Move Along", the band's name is the all American rejects- hmmm.  I will have to google and find out more about them.  Anyway I made my mental list and kept myself going.  I found a penny when getting a breakfast treat for the kids...life on Newark-Granville Road will be better today.  If you need to keep moving take a listen to the song- I'll try to learn how to post here soon...need to move along and keep this day moving along on Newark-Granville Road.

is good and even better having enjoyed Livingston Taylor at The Midland...

Thank you MedBen and congratulations on 75 years.  What a treat to enjoy this show and learn about bit about your history- thank you for all you and have done for this community- life is good thanks to your support of people and our health!  Lots of great blog ideas while sitting in a beautiful restored theater, listening to great talent, presenting music and poetry in simple way, holding Joe's hand, surrounded by good people and great friends.  Kids happily engaged and cared for, dinner with lots of laughter and good food and conversation across the street...life is good on Newark-Granville road for sure. Thank you Livingston Taylor and my friends I shared the evening with and Joe Leithauser for being next to me.

Graduation Parties

What a delight to be included in so many graduation parties this year and the extra bonus was the fun the kids had as well. We're lucky to have great friends and what a treat to have friends with great kids that we have enjoyed getting to know in the community.  It was an honor to celebrate with many families and share this special time in these families' lives.  Church also honored our seniors with a lovely service and blessing- well done FPC!

A highlight of the weekend was a dear friend and her daughters friends brought family brought friends and families to The Works for a party.  I so enjoyed being the connection and staff/host with the event.  The courtyard was decorated in clever and darling ways making a unique and special celebration for these four great kids and their guests.  We heard many people say they never thought about utilizing the works in this way...wahoo- many fun ways to entertain at The Works and I'm happy to help you make something happen- visit www.attheworks.org for more details!  The Works also have team building and meeting space!

Another fun part of graduation hoo-hah is the memories it wakes-up...my own graduation from Altoona Area High School.  The white dress I loved, the graduation party at my parents house, going out after the actual ceremony...what was the name of that restaurant...strawberry lemonade, mozzarella sticks....I can see it in my head.....hmmm....Anyway it doesn't feel that long ago but it actually was...over 25 years....1986!

And speaking of long time ago..The Memorial Golf Tournament was Joe's and my first date- 1997- it rained but that didn't matter. The tourney was the invited date- the informal dinner before was deemed the first date.....And Reunion Weekend at Denison- good things always happen on the hill in June.  We benefit from the opportunity to connect with great alums back in town every year- and this year was no different.

A great weekend kicking off June, saying farewell to crazy May and getting ready to embrace summer on Newark-Granville Road!
