2019 Final Post: Top Posts with Updates and Plans!

How to end 2019 on the blog?  How about recap and follow-up to the top posts? What did readers read the most?  What is the update connected to the topics? What is ahead for these topics in to 2020? Here you go:

  • Derby 2019- most hits- and it was a great one! Oh the fun we had celebrating Clare and bringing together great folks for this annual party. The amazing partnership to execute!  The race itself had the wild ending with disqualification. Current status: 146th's Run for the Roses official glasses are in the house- Joe opened them as one of his gifts on Christmas. The color scheme- blue and gold, for Peter- Gville colors, Michigan colors.  2020- May 2nd- Peter's party- woo hoo! Know the derby party color will be primarily Red- for Wabash!
  • College News:  Clare's Wooster news- the college search is always a hot topic. Update- she is so happy. We're proud of her good work and sharing and observing her growth. She has made dear friends from all over including California.  Her success in the classroom can be attributed to her hard work and good time management, engagement with professors, Granville HS prep and what we love about the liberal arts: communication, inquiry, challenge, ah-has, reading, analyzing, trying new things, and so much more. Please ask her about it! 2020 will bring excitement with the lacrosse season kicking off a few days upon her return- she cannot wait! Wooster plays Denison on April 9th.  She (Joe) is looking forward to her math class- the econ conversations last semester made me smile.  Peter's path to Wabash has had your attention and ours!  He is so happy about his decision and theirs making his 2019 ending quite nice. 2020- what fun we'll have supporting his start-up. No major allowed to be declared until 2021 FYI!
  • The family that had the fire early in the year.  Thank you again for the love and support you shared.  Update- they are back in their house and doing great! We had such a nice time with our new friends a few weeks ago catching-up.  Granville is such a special place.  2020 update- my friend is reaching out to another family experiencing a similar tragedy.  We all want to help but connecting with others that have walked the walk is important. I was able to help Nandi connect with Jeanine who helped in ways I could not.  People helping people that is what the blog tries to do.
  • Travel- our Spring break trip to Zion National Park with Vegas and Bryce was a popular read. We look back on it fondly and know we want to return someday to do the Narrows Hike!  Vegas- not in any hurry.  2020 update- we planned and are booked for Spring Break. Lesson from last year- don't wait.  We waited and flights were so high and that is why we went to Vegas in 2019. Last year we wanted baseball spring training, this year- we go see the Nationals- Peter's team.  Bonus- they play in south Florida- Palm Beach. Hello Lilly P!  I'm also headed to Keys for work this year. I anticipate a few posts from this area in the new year.
  • Books!  No surprise- 2019 had so many great reads and 2020's pile excites me.  I value and hold dear discussions and time with book club members- two groups. Santa helped- Molly O'Neil (DU alum) memoir was in my stocking.  Reading on break: Scott Hylbert's Task Lyst. Yes, two DU alums on the pile!

  • Ankle- last year at this time I was in surgery recovery- Dr. Berlet is my hero.  He fixed what didn't go well after the break of my right ankle due to a fall- my mobility limited. 2019 recovery has been great. Update- I went ice skating! I wear heals. I climbed the mounds to take the swings. I made a new friend- the Berlets are Denisonians, inspiring and I was lucky to meet the whole family in 2019! 2020 more action and a return to the tennis court, without giving up golf- more golf.
  • Construction! We have a screened-in porch and with that new walls and windows for the kitchen all thanks to John Hays Construction, Joe and friends supporting the journey.  This is a dream come true!   Updated- painting, staining, sanding, furniture in progress. 2020- landscaping and fabric- goal in true use by Derby!
Of course,  there was so much more involving family and friends in this very special life on Newark-Granville Road.  Sally, Lucy, Joe, camp, Denison, philanthropy, pumpkins all repeated words making life on Newark-Granville Road so special in 2019!  Thank you for sharing 2019 with us! Happy start to 2020 to you and your family.

PS- The official final post of 2019 was to be "Leithauser end of year/new year/ in place of Christmas-Holiday card".  I had a plan and not surprising in my life on Newark-Granville Road there is now a plan B.  The cards I ordered- I sent to my sister in Maryland.  I won't bore you with why- I goofed.  I  designed the card and let it wait to check errors and have the kids weigh in- the mistake was me hurrying to get them here.  I had grand plans of starting 2020 working on the cards- sending out our New Year's greetings as close to day 1, 2020 as possible.  Oh well.  Future post!

Christmas Love and Light Launched!

We've arrived- one of the best set of days of the year- Christmas Eve day and into the 12 Days of Christmas!  Note Thanksgiving, 4th of July, the Summer Solstice (regular blog readers will know as this is what inspires posts) are the other best days of the year.  So with the 12 Days of Christmas comes the debate- when are the 12 days, do they end with epiphany- Jan 6, Sally's birthday or the 5th.  When you google this - most agree with Peter's point- however, Jan 6th is still the day we celebrate the arrival of the Magi, Sally's birthday and that is when usually (there have been exceptions) we take down the tree. In the meantime we soak up Christmas. I've worked hard this month and have loved it, I've been in the moment BUT I love this time of year!

Life on Newark-Granville Road 2019 Christmas Day was celebrated with the Leithausers. Ann hosted- thank you so much.
Good work W. Leithausers
this pic sums up the day! Thank you W.Leithausers

Nadine and Jim making the trip from Sherwood, we did miss Alicia and Caiden. The Westerville Leithausers have a beautiful, comfortable home with space and activities galore!  The traditional meal has evolved to make sure everyone is happy and I love how our kids' involvement.  This year Clare contributed with her mac n cheese! She is growing up, I love this stage of our lives- college and college approaching kids. It was great to see Will and catch up on his Cincinnati and co-op work in the DC area!  I'm so lucky to have Ann- we're married to brothers- a week or so ago I was able to stop by and we brainstormed our gathering and menu. I enjoy bringing sides to round out or meet a wish- this year it was take-ahead mashed potatoes (to go with Ann's beef tenderloin), Brussels sprouts with pomegrante seeds- festive (found a yummy recipe with apple cider vinegar) and Ga-Ga shrimp as an appetizer (I've been in a shrimp mode.)   Ann had ham for Will, green bean casserole for Clare, corn pudding. Nadine and Jim provide fruits and veggies that are a treat. Dessert was red velvet cheesecake with amazing cookie selections. Clare is with me- cornflake holiday cookies take the day, in fact, she did take them in the car- they didn't make it home. Yum!  Really a beautiful day because- as Ann said during the toast- she had read the recent article on the importance of cousins- first friends- we're all glad we do like one another and get along and look forward to being together! Next up- New Year's Eve- dinner planning started over dessert! And we're debating the start of the actual decade.  Nadine brought up honest conversation about supporting them as they age, making decisions- she had read that when families unite it is a good time.  She is right and I'm grateful we are able to communicate and be honest.  It isn't easy, it isn't perfect, in fact,  it is just hard.  Nadine and Jim (by the way) look and are great!   Fun holiday gift exchange emceed by Caroline on the new Kareoke machine- what a hit!  I'll wrap up it there- so much more to share but we'll just have to remember ourselves.

Christmas Eve day was really special.  I won't go into too many details but want to chronicle the love as Christmas is all about love.  Maybe that is what I hold dear about this stretched out holiday - we do what we love, we buy and give for love- our faith inspires and calls us to action to love. I love traditions, I love gathering around table and the preperation to do so.  Christmas eve for us included our dear neighbors and friends for ice skating (tradition well documented in past posts) and then post church dinner in both our homes- two tables!!  The 6:30 pm service was lovely and I enjoyed seeing so many people and being part of this service that indeed told us- go out into the world caring Christ's light and love- He is Born for Us.  We came home and love and light radiated.

Merry Christmas to all that celebrate.  Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish friends.  Those that celebrate other religious, are spiritual or atheist- it is the season of short days and appreciation for light and love-my wish for you. Light, love and laughter- our world needs and we can all give.  My life on Newark-Granville Road is blessed and loving this 1st or 2nd day of Christmas!   Next up- Stoner Christmas as Nana and Pap arrive tomorrow!

Pictures to tell the rest of the story:

silly kids arguing on Christmas morning- my answer to shut it down.
thank you friend

Clare is loved- Wooster love
He opens this gift last for a reason.

Yes they have to wait until we're ready.  Lucy here too!

A very special Christmas Eve dinner

Just In Time December

Who would have thought my ten-year career with Federal-Mogul would prepare me so well for motherhood in December!  Overheard at the work Christmas gathering- me sharing this logic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Edwards_Deming  and https://leankit.com/learn/lean/what-is-just-in-time-manufacturing/  Real life approach to my life on Newark-Granville Road in December.
For instance:

-Mail Stoner Christmas Package- focus on those gifts, then wrap, then box, then ship.  Check!
-However didn't included birthday gift, realize this night before special birthday.
-Night before special birthday- on-line order of delivery- Check!  Family memories around conversation and process to order!
-Mail Christopher Package- focus those gifts, then wrap, then box, then ship. One item can't arrive in time to go in a package from Granville- no worries, ship direct. Check! Check!
-New Years Cards plan- not Christmas, one year we did Valentine's cards- take the card's picture when all kids home and available- check!
-Connect with friend about getting together, after reviewing calendar- Sat the 21 was available- friend consults with husband- we make it work. Special gathering time with new friends and our families- check!
-Download and order New Year's Cards- option to arrive on Dec 31- giving me the week of continued Christmas and early in New Year to send-JIT New Years Christmas! Check.
-Gifts for the week- who will open on the 25th- working on those- Joe and I got out today and made sure we're even!
-Who opens on the 27th- working on that....hmmmm may even pick up one more thing on the 26th- think Sale!!

Okay, the reality is it doesn't always work- Friday was the day of forgets. I thought it was still December xteen and I had time.  A party that was often on the 23rd was moved and I missed it.  Sally's dress I thought I ordered- I didn't.  The basketball pie process for delivery had some oops and oh how I love how well customers understood and accepted these oops!  Clare and Sally ended up finding Sally a different outfit and it made up for the non-ordered dress and they had sister time.  There is so much to do in December it just can't be done and JIT is what works for me.

Just in Time also feels like Just when you need it.  Just when the stress of the to-dos, it is time to be. Be with friends, family and the love of the season.  I'm feeling it.  The joy of finding these gifts and moments. Our work lunch felt like time stood still- we just lingered and talked around the table.  The same has happened in so many beautiful gatherings this past week to celebrate the season together.  Even the to-dos in December bring joy and peace and that is what JIT seems to provide for me.  It is a type of mindfulness.

It is the eve of the eve and we're geared up for a very special day in our life on Newark-Granville Road.  We'll keep the tradition of skating started by dear friends going- join us if you can- noon- Gib and Lou Reese Ice Arena in Newark!

Greetings from Under the Tree

I am not actually under the tree, I was watering the tree and did pause there.  It is cool and quiet but messy.  The sap, the needles, the view of the light strings but outside of that mess is beautiful.  Christmas is messy, life is messy.

God Bless This Mess- title of the sermon on Sunday at FPC: https://www.granpres.org/sermons/2019/12/16/dayybipjnbg4h0cb91mscw7d7tnyk2  Love it, live with it, be inspired by it- it is the mess.  And yes the mess makes me grateful for God, my faith, church, family, friends and health.  The sermon discusses the fight or flight reaction of our brains.  I'm fascinated by this and saw it in action during the ice storm of 2004- the Christmas I was pregnant (with Sally) and shared that state with so many people.  I saw it in action on Saturday night when we heard the tree (just decorated during a family at home, Clare picked a favorite dinner night) crash. Right on cue- the Home Alone movie had just had a big crash and truly we all jumped and then heard through the ceiling a very interesting sound- three of five rushed upstairs someone saying- the tree.  I sat frozen, then Sally took my hand and we went up to see- yes the poor tree.  Yes a mess, yes we all got it figured it out. It was not my finest moment- messy, behind the scenes is what you get in this blog- Life on Newark-Granville Road is messy. I blamed Joe for the stand- this was the second fall by the way.  We're laughing now- sweet Sally- Mom we didn't lose that many ornaments?  My reply- I have three heads and a wing?  Really?  And she is right in the grand scheme not that many shattered and some even fixable.

It is like the view from under that tree- it is cool, it is far from perfect, it is real and it is beautiful.  I'll stop for now but do want to share two things connected to FPC....

2019 Christmas Tree- Not As Planned, Is it Ever?l

"When are we getting our tree?"  asked our children on the Friday after Thanksgving.  This to me is like asking "what is for dinner" after I have just served you a homemade lunch.  I said  - I'll figure it out.  In church on the 1st Sunday in Advent our children asked again.  This made me pause and ask Clare- "you are Okay with us getting the tree without you?"  She said yes, this made me sad for a moment but reflects where we are.  We've done our best to include everyone in tree hunts and decorating but it isn't always the case.  And even when we plan to include all- something often happens like illness to keep us moving in a group of four or like this year- 3.

Wanting to keep things moving and not wait too long I dubbed today- tree day earlier in the week. Peter asked if we could sleep in and skip church- thinking ahead to his quick trip to Wabash and swim meet weekend.  I agreed we could make it a family day. It was going to be lovely- I even considered making gingerbread waffles! Ha!  Poor Peter did not get the happy sleep in he had planned, instead he woke in the wee hours sick to his stomach and with a throat on fire.  He woke me up and we put things in order. He was able to go back to sleep.  Joe as well wasn't 100% so Sally and I had a quiet morning of tea and banana bread (lovely gift delivered with a poinsettia!) opening Christmas cards.  We decided we would venture out the two of us to get a tree.

Since the house is still in construction mode (we have a beautiful porch and kitchen structure!!) Now we're talking to workers to refinish the floor and making decisions on paint and furniture for the kitchen and porch. We're still in the dining room with TV and all the things you need and keep at hand I thought it best to go easy/light on Christmas decor.  The kids insisted on a tree but I thought we'd get a small one this year.

As we were gearing up Joe appeared- rested and ready to join us.  We quickly made an on-line appointment for Peter, leaving him to sleep hurried out the door to get the 2019 Life on Newark-Granville Road Christmas Tree!  We went to the first tree farm we found- Homestead on Loudon.  Lovely layout and many trees to chose! We inquired where the Noraway spruces were and the gentleman sighed- pointing just beyond the barn- bingo- quick access! However he warned us- they were fat and wide this year, may not fit in the bailer.  We quickly found one we liked, thinking it was too fat. We took a wonderful walk seeking others and realized we were in love with the first choice. Back we went.  Sally took the lead- saying- she loves fat trees, we love fat trees, wide trees are what we do.  It is true, I've taken the family all over licking county and beyond, some times leaving tree farms when the tree wasn't wide enough.  The year I was ready to make the change, Sally saved or shaped the day.

Hooray! The guys at Homestead we were able to get it bailed and onto the car. This meant we were able to get it into the house.  Once releasing the bows I realized this was a very very wide/fat tree.  The living room furniture had to be rearranged to accomodate.  This isn't something we do often, unlike my own mother who would rearrange the furniture for afternoon fun. As I type here at the end of the day, next to the beautiful full tree with the living room in a new format I'm pleased Sally took us the direction she did.  Peter missed the fun but is on the mend.  We took a time out to take him to the minute- clinic and confirmed my mom diagnosis - strep. He'll be on the mend soon.  Joe dropped us and picked up more lights for the very wide tree.

We'll wait to decorate with ornaments when Clare is home- taking our time to make Christmas what it will be for 2019 on Newark-Granville Road. The rest of the decor is queded up and we'll see what makes it out this year.  It is not what we planned for holiday decorating 2019, it never is but boy is it nice.

Readers Response and PIES!

I met a reader today.  We do not know one another very well at all but there we were at a lovely holiday gathering.  Thank you for reading, thank you for saying so and thank you for giving me today's blog topic!

Denison- this reader likes coming up the hill, appreciates the insights and invitation.  Thank you reader and all those in the community that engages.  This year more than ever we welcome you. Help us fill the halls and stands, please attend concerts, shows, games and lectures.  Need the scoop here you go:  https://denison.edu/events   For events at the Eisner Center you'll want to register- most are FREE- but we don't want to plan well. One of my favorites is coming this weekend- Singers Workshop- truly a performance and not to be missed and this one is- Gilbert and Sullivan!! Anything GS does is great, Friday and Saturday at Denison- Pirates of Penzance!  Enjoy, Go, Date Night!  So much going on during the walking tour- you'll see Denison all over!  Take a look: http://business.granvilleoh.com/events/details/granville-christmas-candlelight-walking-tour-12863

Want the information to come to you- I highly recommend subscribing to Campus and Community Eletter- it arrives via email:  http://eepurl.com/bWc9kX  Denison and the chamber work together to make this happen!  Take a look at November's here:  https://mailchi.mp/granvilleoh/town-and-gown-issue-26-june-1494661?e=bdc81313f7

PIES- I promised to email about Sally raising money for Granville High School's Girls Basketball Team. This is an important fundraiser tied to an additional effort. The pie profits support the Girls program- they bond and learn important lessons on the court.  Clare played all four years and it is one of the reasons she left Granville ready for Wooster.  The current teams are awesome- impressive, fun, great young women are on that floor. We love seeing the success and growth. Thanks Coaches for all you do.  Join us: schedule here:  https://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/granville-blue-aces-(granville,oh)/girls-basketball/schedule.htm  Back to Pies.

1st- if you want a pie- let me know.  Sally will call you.  Nine types of pie offered- two apple!  They will be delivered on the 20th of December. You can buy a pie to donate to the Salvation Army.  Pies are $13 each and checks made out to: Granville Athletic Boosters. They are made fresh and can be frozen!  So the new effort?  Just like the Boys team, the Girls team will now cover the costs of student tickets to home games! Want to sponsor this effort- have your name announced at the home games- let me or Coach Steele know.  I will be asking and finding the money to make this happen.  Thank you to those already interested.  Thank you for supporting the energy and providing opportunities for students to cheer on these teams and be together at school!

Life on Newark-Granville Road- never dull! Am I never not asking for money?  Probably not- I love philanthropy, I love giving, I love helping others give and support important worthwhile causes.  We are all asked to give all the time, even I get tired of it.  But we get to choose where we give, where we say yes.  I like the bakery analogy.  You go to a bakery weekly to buy a bagel.  The bakery doesn't expect you to buy a cookie or cake every visit.  What the bakery hopes is you will return regularly and when you do have a special occasion or sweet tooth- you will get the cake and/or cookie!  I see philanthropy as this so today in my life on Newark-Granville Road I'm offering pies and free tickets for students to the Girls GHS Basketball games! Thanks for thinking about it.

Thanksgiving 2019- The Love and The Real

I do love Thanksgiving. I love the meal. I love the family gathering. I love the travel- I didn't cook much at all this week- thank you Mom and Sarah.  I love reconnecting with old friends. Hugs from the class of 2023 returning girls was amazing and I love that they made Friendgiving work for Clare with her travel.  I love the photos we capture and am sharing a few below for you.  I'm featuring the in-laws.  I'm lucky to have amazing in-laws that are friends not just family. I miss them already.   The planning to reunite is important, not easy but important.

I like to keep it real on the blog here so behind the scenes/pictures too.....

Stoner Christmas card- maybe? We're looking pretty good.  The real behind this one- I made Sally change.  She had packed only a summer skirt. This year the girl cousins had a hotel room with the grown-ups. YES- love my father's philosophy- don't build the church for Easter Sunday or the house for Tgiving visits- pay for the hotel room.  So when we loaded up to go she was not Stoner ready.  Luckily she and Nana are about the same size and Nana's closet to the rescue.  It was a great night- dinner at FHCC does not disappoint. Dear family friends joined us and we'll look forward to the next one.  I love this picture enough to post it twice on the blog!
BIL Greg- my dining partner when we took over Rockie Pizza - south end! YUM, he was waiting on his cheesesteak! Not shown here- additional cousins- 2nd and 3rd/ 2nd once removed! Thanks Meg and Jessica!!

SIL Dawn- Turkey Trot kick-off, she smoked me. I was last but I loved it. Sally led the Leithuasers but Clare snuck in at the end. Peter rallied and beat Joe. I'm so proud of the Granville Leithausers and all Stoners for this effort.
Scott and Ann- SIL/BIL- we're married to brothers- say no more.  Love them and how we find time to unite- Pizza-Giving was what worked for 2019 the day before our departure.

Cousin love at Pizza Giving, we missed you Will!

Other highlights!! Driving out- I put it on Facebook and it is true- I love all five of us in one car.  It isn't easy, the last hour of the drive is never pretty. Deciding on where we'll stop/do drive-thru for dinner- geeze. But we make it work and we're together. I've loved it from spring break Florida drives and when they were babies and I'd take the 3 Leits for grandparent visits.  It matters, it mattered, it worked- they have great relationships with family and it makes a difference in our life on Newark-Granville Road and a big reason I love Thanksgiving and gives plenty of real to share.

The College Years- Peter's News

I hope I never forget the sound of his voice- pure joy.  "MOM, I got in Wabash!" "Oh Peter,  I'm so happy for you, proud of you.  YAYY!  Woo hoo!" And the timing was great- I had just pulled into my parent's home in Maryland and could walk in with the phone on speaker.  It could not be staged any better- it was cocktail hour and they were at the white table. I said-" hi, hi, Mom and Dad- Peter has news". Peter said from the phone- "I'm going to Wabash, the early decision letter came today".  They declared- "Ohhhh, Oh Peter, we are so proud of you. YAY That is GREAT" Clapping hands, smiling with pride. The happy energy exemplified- electricity between Ohio, Maryland and really Indiana.  The happy tears- this is an exciting time for Peter and in our lives on Newark-Granville Road.

Wabash College- https://www.wabash.edu  I did not know much about Wabash until I accepted this role.  The best part of my job- meeting and engaging with Denison parents. They are really great people.  Yes there are a few parents way over-reacting out there but every town, school, team, show has them.  I'm understanding more of the "why" on that by the way....the intentions are there.    I am so pleased I was able to travel to Indianapolis and meet one on one with a parent on the board of Wabash- he compared his and his daughter and son's schools.  There was a match and I listened. Denison plays Wabash in many sports- I took notice.  (They joined the NCAC in 1998 by the way) When we set out on the college search with Clare, making Peter come along on many.  Clare found her school- Wooster is a great fit.  I saw her on Tuesday for dental procedure process step (all is great thank you Dr. Jump) she is so happy, would not stay for dinner- just wanted to get home.  I thought Wooster was Peter's school- he went for basketball camp and loved it.  Peter's search led to Indiana not Michigan- a small school there I thought would be great.

I'm not going to recount the whole journey to Friday and Crawfordsville but I will make some observations.
First- thank you to all supporting and loving Peter. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, Joe, friends, friends parents, teachers- sooooo many teachers, administrators, Denison colleagues, neighbors...it is much more than a village- it is an extended family- multiple- circles overlapping and loving- figure eights galore!

Next- It started with a tour. Joe took Peter to see three schools when we realized we needed to kick the search into 4th gear!  It was a great tour and he ranked it first. That meant an overnight.  I took him for the overnight program the end of September- that meant skipping Clare's Black and Gold weekend.  Who wanted kids so close together (18 months) me.  We came back and processed what we had discovered, what Peter thought with Joe on Sunday night.  Wabash was the fit for learning, growing, developing and furthering his education. He articulated this so well. BUT he didn't think he had time to get the ED ap completed- we encouraged him to try.  Thanks to his Wabash counselor, his guidance counselor, his devoted teachers and mentors he made it happen.  One step at a time we told him, have faith (when he texted me (eek from school) should apply early action to other schools.) I also asked more questions - no school is perfect and parents have important roles, roles that shift as we move into these years!

There is so much more to say and share. I'm listening to
The Stressed Years of Their Lives"  Anthony L. Rostain and B. Janet Hibbs more on this in future posts and conversations.  It scares me deeply.  It is sooo good. Were our parents scared when sending us off- they should have been? I'm going to talk to my parents about this over the holiday. I will focus on the positive, the happy, be in the moment.  Peter is doing great with his senior year- honor roll, we love his teachers and classes and support. He is growing, developing, maturing. He still does silly things like drive to OSU to watch game day and can't find parking and comes home. He is happy, we are happy. We love being a family of four and supporting Clare at Wooster. We can't wait for her to be home on Tuesday and THANKSGIVING to kick-in to full gear!!!  His search has him led him to a beautiful, small liberal art school int he Midwest with red and white as their colors, incredible alumni/family network and pride, and so much more.  We will learn and grow as parents as we continue down the path in the college years in our life on Newark-Granville Road. Thank you for traveling with me and us and together!

blue ceiling and painted pumpkins

Life on Newark-Granville Road- the topic/update I've been walking around with in my head- the blue ceiling, the construction update. I'm so tickled to have a blue ceiling! I've always wanted a screened in porch and southern porches with blue ceilings make me happy- I now have one.  Construction is moving right along- 1st panel with a screen was put in on Friday!  It has been a fascinating process/journey to see how it all unfolds, builds.  There is still much to do before truly done-beyond the builders but exciting progress and that ceiling makes me smile every time I see it.

Another little thing in my life on Newark-Granville Road,  I love painted pumpkins. I am holding onto all things fall.  Last week's snow while there were leaves on the tree did not please me. Regular readers will know I don't do much December activities until we celebrate Thanksgiving. I LOVE THANKSGIVING!  Here is my view tonight. I won't have it much longer as we're well into November.  Thanks Cedar and Thread for the access to the talent creating these pumpkins!  The orange pumpkin in the back says- Thankful and yes I am.  Have a good week and thanks to all that engage and help and make it happen in my LONGR!

Getting By with a little help from my Friends- Thank you Gary Heikes

1st Draft......I've been a little sad lately.  A dear friend from my past died.  I found out on Facebook.  I do not think I'd know if it had not been on Facebook if I had not received the messenger message. I'm grateful Gary and I connected over the years over Facebook.  Gary Heikes was the friend that gave me a whole lot more than a little bit of help.  Gary was a work partner, direct report of mine when I moved to Omaha, Nebraska knowing nothing about how to manage a warehouse in the auto part business. And in Omaha it was way more than auto parts- we helped farmers with implements and engines, industrial companies with manufacturing equipment and I learned distribution and efficiency.  This is where my love of the MBTI happened as we merged facilities and utilized formalized teamwork. Gary was the natural leader who managed up, over and down with a smile and a kind let’s get it down attitude.  When I accepted the first resignation on small 3.5 fte team it was Gary who said- no one is irreplaceable, this is a great opportunity.  I could not have done what I did that launched my ten year successful career at Federal-Mogul without him.  I loved living and working in Omaha because of Gary, Stan and Joe and I'm grateful to be reliving those memories this week as we remember and honor Gary's memory.  Gary continued to be a partner and colleague those ten years I was with Federal-Mogul.  His life made a huge difference, he impacted, inspired, supported and accepted me and so many others.  He went through life with deep love- his relationships with his wife, parents, kids was based on love and he told us, he shared that.  What a gift it was to work with Gary Heikes- rest in peace Gary and heaven is happy you are there.  https://www.cullenfuneralhome.com/obituary/gary-heikes

So this week more than ever I'm grateful for the friend that had me for tea and introduced me to a new tea- do you know about Mark Wendell's Hu-KWA tea? It is smoked so it tastes smoky.  It makes me think of scotch.  My palate never liked smoky things but that is changing. My tastes are evolving and shifting as I age.  This is a good thing.   This week I'm grateful for the volunteer that sent me a beautiful thank you and when I called to say so - she said- I just wanted to thank you for the little things you do, for being there and to thank you on behalf of those that do not.  WOW.  WOW. WOW. Boy, do I love to learn from those I serve and this will stay with me and I will do a better job of thanking those that serve me in non-profit volunteer ways.

So this week I'm grateful for the friend that rounded up a group of women for a Girls Night out to see a play. I did not have to make any of the plans. I'm invited and I'll show up.  Thank you, dear friend.

I'm thankful for the texts and check-ins with friends I just do not get to see enough. Our lives have shifted.  Many of them are empty-nesters, my work fills my days and I miss the time I use to have, we use to have and our seasons.  But we stay connected, figure eights apply and we help one another as we can.

Life on Newark-Granville Road- ups, downs and filled with friends that keep us moving. I am grateful. Thank you for reading.

the making of a Nats Fan

Loving the World Series 2019 in our house!  Peter is the Nats fan and we all love baseball.  So how did Peter become a Nationals Fan?  The story is simple- he liked Adam Dunn, when Adam played for the Reds.  Joe is the lifelong, diehard Reds fan so of course Peter got to know the players.  Peter cheered for the Nats when Adam went there.  I remember Peter telling me his favorite player was moving to the Chicago White Sox and I said- nope- you're not following a player, you are a Nats fan. This aligned with cheering for the Nationals's minor league teams- yes teams!

For two years The Columbus Clippers were the farm team for the National, lucky for us they were Peter's formative years.  After the Yankees left the program was determining Cincinnati or Cleveland and Washington, DC  filled the void.  AND my hometown of Hagerstown, MD has the beloved Suns- a farm team for the Nationals. Oh, the players we've seen there- Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg are two I remember well.  We've had fun traveling to see games in the beautiful Nationals Park and seeing the various teams whenever possible.  A fun game was in Richmond one spring break- were passing through, thinking about a dinner stop and turned on the radio- The Suns were in town- off we went!

Peter was born to love baseball- born on opening day- Red's opening day and my father's 60th birthday.  Interesting that the Nats beat his grandfather's team, the Dodgers, to move to this year's World Series!  I'm an Orioles fan because of my Maryland upbringing and just love having a son with a love of this "new" or "renewed" team in DC!   Can you guess his lullaby?

Time to tune in and cheer for the Nationals.....

Sunday- here we go again....

Sunday seems to be post day lately.  Thanks for reading and sharing the happenings in my life on Newark-Granville Road.  It is time for bed but a few reflections from last week as well as invitations for the upcoming week.

Last Week: Yes, I did get some rest.  I had to drive to Crawfordsville, Indiana to do so but I enjoyed going to bed early in a beautiful historic home in the country- thank you Air BnB.   Peter's visit to Wabash College went well.  More as he progresses on his journey.  I always benefit from a college visit and was quite impressed with this historic, Midwestern, liberal arts college.  Frequent readers know I love a good road-trip!  NPR, chat time with my companion or phone time and just listening to the radio with beautiful scenery a nice break from routine!

Joe and Sally took in the Wooster Black and Gold Weekend- so kind of them to host Denison as the football opponent.  Joe loved the bagpipes and band, the DU win was nice too!  I was sorry to miss but am looking into a road trip north for my own college plaid game day!! Fun to get Joe's report on how happy Clare is and how much he enjoys her friends.  Sunday phone call tradition continued and I loved  hearing Clare report on how happy she was with her Dad and sister's visit and update me directly on her fighting Scot updates!

Denison Reunion planning getting real:  Denison Class of 1989, 1990, 1991 30th Reunion Page   On Facebook- please join and check-in! Also we get a website: https://class.denison.edu/1990/  More in the future. Thanks to our classmates for leading and being involved!! Mark and Lauren- you rock.

And how about those Nats!  Future Blog post- how we raised a Nats fan.  It really has been great baseball and what really makes it special- Peter and Joe's commentary, knowledge and passion that they share liberally.   Mother Nature is delighting us outside, The Works art gallery delights inside and many pieces of art showcase her brilliance.  https://attheworks.org/experience-art/  I was able to see this on Thursday when it opened and look forward to going back.  Bonus- picked up a new pumpkin from the glass pumpkin patch- one with warts to honor our little patch in the front yard!

This Week:  World Series- LETS GO NATS!  http://business.granvilleoh.com/events/details/candidate-issues-forum-13925  Candidate Night- Granville!! 6:30 pm
LETS GO ACES- Girls Field Hockey takes on Columbus Academy- 5 pm- CA.  On Tuesday of course.
Keep an eye on the house on Wednesday- both Joe and I are out of town.....I'm only in Indy for the day- he is  working in North Carolina most of the week.
Construction continues and great progress is being made.  I'm reminded over and over why I'm happy not to be building a whole house- those that have done it- bless you.

We're heading into transition time- winter sports meetings- check- basketball for Sally, swimming for Peter.  It is good to connect with parents and players and start making plans in our Life on Newark-Granville Road for the rest of October and into November, December...time flies, soaking it in on a Sunday.

Blessings, on butterflies and on the blog.

October is in full swing and has filled me with so much happiness in my life on Newark-Granville Road.  At FPC https://www.granpres.org we're focusing on our blessings. We're using butterflies to capture the many things we recognize God gives us in our lives.   I'll use this platform to share just a few of the blessings in my life since my last post!

Time with Clare.  Last Sunday Joe and I went to take in the last fall ball play-date game and that was really fun.  It gave us a hint of what is to come- it makes me smile that my first outing to the Wooster stadium was for lax.  However, it is fall and I look forward to getting there for a football game!  Soon grasshopper, soon.  Clare spent her fall break week with us, her friends and the oral surgeon- implant process step by step. She is so happy and we're so grateful she has her home away from home at Wooster. It was so nice to cook for her, catch-up and hear and see her happy and connecting with dear ones.

Time with Joe- absence makes the heart grow fonder.  He's back traveling which is great- it means he is engaging in the work he loves- helping clients navigate data- over-simplified but truth.  I enjoy picking him up at the airport, sharing the Eisner Opening and BoJack Horseman for the stage!!, a Granville date night with his work friends. Bonus was Buxton basement tavern time and Granville brewing.  Even going to the grocery today was nice.

Construction- it is getting real, the breakfast nook area is framed and porch coming soon- holes for footers in the back yard.  It does mean that piles are everywhere.  We're always in motion and actually found a pile of mail from our last clean-up/move things time- Derby! Thank you for the thank yous, invites and oh yes- now we know why the garbage was not picked up- the bill was not paid- eek!
May mail  found in October
The weekend also allowed me to:
  • hug a dear friend having a good day in her cancer battle.
  • accept a delivered bouquet from a sweet friend's garden with a handwritten note.
  • select probably the last of the season's dahlia's at the Granville's Farmers Market. Peonies are one of my favorite welcomers of summer, these tubers usher the season's close so very well.
  • I caught up and treated myself at an annual shopping outing in a special friend's home with great folks corralled.
  • I cheered for Denison field hockey and football teams all bundled up- bringing out the winter hat a bit early but it works!  So many great parents and alums on campus and around this weekend- what a delight to engage and see folks at every turn.
FPC's love shown bright this weekend.  The rummage sale allowed me to see true beauty shine- Ellen prepped us to welcome all our neighbors and we did and I was teary.  Sally and Peter volunteered in their ways.  Our service today was amazing in so many ways and again I shed tears of joy. Our blessings multiple and go into the world making a difference.  Giving is expotential- I talked about this at the DU FLC meeting and it is so true for my own life on Newark-Granville Road.  Thanks for sharing and making it so with your friendship and support.

Construction or Politics

Which will be easier to blog about this month?  That is the question.

Construction- will not go as planned. This is foreign territory for us.  This isn't build new, it is remodel, building on to what was here, blending ideas and dreams into reality and affordability with teamwork, partnership and outside expertise and person power.  I must focus on the end result and have faith.  I must acknowledge the process- daily check-ins and gratitude for creative problem solving. Remember it is an old house and this isn't the first addition.  Exciting, stressful, real and needed.

Politics- local.  We vote November 5th- here is the page for local issues, candidates and early voting. https://licking.ohioboe.com/election-info/ I'm still figuring it out.  Friends are running- thank you.  Acquaintences are running- thank you. Friends of friends are running- thank you. Strangers are running- thank you.  More women are running- woo hoo!  I need to dig deeper.  Joe and I met one candidate for the first time- we appreciated his service that makes him a great candidate.  Joe and I had coffee with another candidate- we love his enthusiasm, perspective and goals- he too is a great candidate.  Here is what I can say on the blog for now- let us all dig deep, lets do what it takes to be informed voters on November 5th or earlier if we vote by absentee or in-person voting downtown Newark- see above link.  Lets go to meetings, lets ask questions, lets listen respectfully to others with different points of views. Lets embrace this process, lets honor, respect and create relationships.

Life on Newark-Granville road- real, honest, awesome, not easy but in the big picture it is and always grateful to share it.

HOCO,BRW, 🏗

HOCO- Granville Homecoming and as always in my life on Newark-Granville Road it only happens with a little help from our friends......Okay a lot of help! With Denison BRW/FLC meeting the same weekend, I'm grateful for:
-Newkirk Salon and Spa-  https://www.newkirksalonspa.com Leslie found room in the schedule and Sally spent the afternoon in hair and make-up with friends doing the same.  I stopped on Thursday to pay and Sally took care of the tips that day- I hope.  She looked stunning!
-Tara, Paige's Mom- Sally's friend's Mom, Clare's friends Mom and my friend- phew- my hero.  She picked Sally up at 10 for nails, lunch, fall treats and getting ready.  We were able to simply show up for the pictures- in the nick of time!!
-Belts- friend time, debrief time for grown-ups and Denison break time for me.  Post dance party site too-yay!
-Kurtz- pick up late night, sleep over AND church delivery- woo hoo!!
-Roofs- driving the kids to dinner, I believe key to the dinner plans too.
And Sally- she made it all happen, partnered with friends and me.  We had fun dress, shoe and jewelry shopping. She knows what she likes and is comfortable in her own skin.  It shows- don't you think.  One of my favorite pics we snapped at...the Newkirks.  How fun to have friends that host pictures and don't have kids in this class or even in the high school!

BRW- which means FLC!  Big Red Weekend at Denison is Homecoming and Parents Weekend rolled into one- amazing affinity reunions and reunions with families and new unions!  Denison families meet and friendships are born.  Denisonians from across the decades with shared interest create new relationships. We fall in love with our campus, town and network all over again- it is a beautiful thing.  I love all the roles I play and people I see.  This weekend had so many great components and a highlight is FLC- Family Leadership Council.  This is philanthropy in action and I'm happy to share more in person.  A dear FLC member - parent 19, parent of an alumnus returned on Saturday and we shared the day- what a treat! A student's request thrilled Joe and Denisonians united for a history walk. Sports is key to our Denison experience and time with Nan and Mike always special. The renovated Women's Soccer Team Room made possible by the Berlet family is something I'll not forget.  I will share that there was much that I did miss- honors for a swim alum, Varsity D Hall of Fame, musical group performances, open houses, baseball and alums and parents I really really wanted to see not to mention a road trip- I often want to be with the away teams.  I listened to my body on Saturday and went to bed "early"- sigh. I woke up refreshed and ready for Sunday to connect with Men's lacrosse- always a treat and I'm grateful to be part of our Denison team of teams. Here is a picture capturing special friendships in my life on Newark-Granville Road
And now time for construction! The  landscaping is out, the furniture has been removed- the screened in porch is happening!  That means new roof and windows for kitchen/breakfast nook leading to the porch.  I've always wanted a porch and the time has arrived! No doubt they'll be updates on the blog. Here are the before pics...I can't wait to post the after and even some of the during here to share the fun of construction in our live on NG Road with you.  Thanks for reading.  Have a great week.

Pumpkins, pumpkins and cilantro

Plethora of pumpkins- I blogged about it on 9-13-19, Pumpkin Patch Take Over, and feel you need the update.  40 pumpkins- bumpy pumpkins- not gourds- actually warty pumpkins or giving credit where credit is due- SuperFreaks. Agriculture lesson for the day- these have been cross-bred to grow like this.  Although smooth pumpkins took time to evolve- the pendulum is always swinging!  Figure eights are everywhere- learn more about this type of pumpkin:  https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/pumpkin/bumpy-pumpkin-fruit.htm  We harvested 40 and now there are more to harvest- we should probably leave some on the vine to see if we can get them bigger. I was worried about them rotting. We have not had much water AND the dear are taking some nibbles. Happy to share some of the fun growing in our life on Newark-Granville Road!

Pumpkins outside, pumpkins inside- glass pumpkins from the Works.  With the arrival of Fall (Autumn Equinox was 9-23-19) this year we pulled out the fall decor and put away summer florals. Sniff, sniff- I do love summer.  However I love all of the beautiful, amazing glass pumpkins, gourds, acorns and leaves we have. I might even say I have a collection.  So many favorites, enhanced around the house with fabric, wax and other materials. You want your own glass pumpkin or to add to your collection?  Visit The Works:  https://attheworks.org   You can even make your own- sign up on line or give a call! It really is fun to see the glass pumpkin patch!    Speaking of the Works- HATSOFF planning is starting- ask me about it- such a nice way to make a difference, be creative and meet great people!

Cilantro- Joe made his Butter Chicken this week and the bunch of cilantro he brought home was bountiful.  He has become an amazing cook with his Instapot and his butter chicken gets better and better.  Adding more cilantro makes it even better in my book.  He inspired me and I added cilantro to my stuffed peppers.  The peppers are always different- we went back to rice and cheese for this batch. Why because it was there.  Cilantro in the freezer now,  some fun recipes in the queue!

Life on Newark-Granville Road- loving the weather, the end and start of the seasons and time together.  Getting ready for BIG RED WEEKEND- Denison Parent's Weekend and Homecoming mixed into one AND we host our Family Leadership Council Meeting on Friday. Welcome back and welcome to new members- philanthropy in action.

Two Nights with Jane

Jane Heller is one of my heroes. She is an artist, an entrepreneur, a mother, a wife, a friend, a leader, a teacher, a philanthropist, a devoted community member, an all-around good person and yes a Denisonian!  I first heard about Jane when I worked at Denison the 1st time- she was the Grandparent Chair for the Annual Fund.  During my time getting to know our community deeper, when I was not working my relationship with Jane blossomed. I met her through numerous people and places. When I went to The Works I experienced her art and had the privilege to see her in action.  In 2012 Denison awarded her the Alumni Citation- such a special day, I remember it fondly- I was proud to call her my friend and celebrate with her:
https://alumni.denison.edu/citations/jane-carstensen-heller/    I've blogged about Jane and her art in my world many times- when you search this blog you'll find her referenced in 2011, 13,14, 17 and June of 19.  I guess that makes this a figure-eight post, round and round!

Lucky for me I've had two nights in a row with Jane.  Last night Kendall honored her by naming the art gallery for her.  It was a lovely reception that gathered good people. Jane does that- she unites special people together with art as core to the experience.  These photos share my sentiments- look closely at the expressions.  Thank you to all those that made last night happen.  Thank you Jane for being you- your remarks were beautiful, inspirational. You included your friends, you told the stories, you recognized those that share your journey and appreciation- oh Jane you make the world so
beautiful.

Tonight we attended an event as Denisonians. What a treat to be at the Columbus Museum of Art for the Denison Beck Series in partnership with Thurber House as author Tayari Jones reflected on her writing and book- An American Marriage.  Jane goes where the art is and today's was amazing. Tayari is a storyteller with fabulous stories.  Lucky us, all of us there- dear friends and Denisonians together meeting and engaging with Tayari! My fellow bookclubers know I love to learn the how and process an author has with writing- Tayari did not disappoint! What a treat to share the evening with you Jane.

Life on Newark-Granville road loves every day when I get to spend time with Jane.  Thank you Kendal for honoring dear Jane. Jane thank you for being you- inspiring us, uniting us, appreciating so many.

PS- An American Marriage is worth the read AND after talking with colleagues and haring from the author- Silver Sparrow is now on my list to read.

Pumpkin Patch Take Over

When I've answered the question- what is that growing in your front yard- multiple times,  it is time to blog about it.  The answer is- pumpkins or maybe gourds!  Years ago I chronicled in pictures our first volunteer pumpkin.

We love to decorate the steps of our house in our life on Newark-Granville Road with pumpkins to signal- fall is here.  When we're done- we deposit them in various beds for the deer.  The first place they started to propagate was the back yard, the vine starting under the pine tree and reaching for the sunlight.  Recently it has been the front yard- under the big tree (that fell this year) near the street.  The leaf pile nutrients must be good for pumpkins!  Sunlight - now that the tree is gone- must be good for pumpkins.  We've never had such a full/robust patch and people are noticing and asking.

Today I went into the patch and was able to harvest/pick two bumpy/ugly pumpkins. They may be more gourd than pumpkin- I'm not sure. They're pictured here and on the front porch. Let the fall decorating commence!  It feels a bit early but this season has been a strange one- late corn/early pumpkins?  We'll see what the Farmers Market has tomorrow.  I'll update this post with more information about our front yard patch. In the past we've had a mix of pumpkins and gourds- we'll see what happens this year in our life on Newark-Granville.

Books for the Year- Discussing Books at CVH launches 19-20

What a delightful, special evening that simply does not disappoint. I'm amazed at how well we know what to do.  Highlights of the evening:
1. I knew when I sent the email describing our process I left something out- the classics, we always pick a classic. How could I forget.  I was reminded and we were laughing about it and a bit worried about one member not having been as regular last year.  We said- what if she doesn't come, who will pick the classic? And as if on queue, she walked in the door!
2. The food! Sally said- is it book club night? I woke up thinking it was and it made my day. I was thinking about those cookies and treats all day. We now share recipes as part of our evening.
3. The friendships. We've been doing this for well over 15 years. Not everyone and we've certainly shifted but a core group and great new group is really bonding and connecting. Such good women unite. Oh it is fun when folks chime in from the past!! Hint hint love to hear from others!!
5. The process- we talk giggle, share honestly and openly and get it done!We track it- we have a spread sheet that lists books back to 2004 reading. We have the assignments for the year and the recommendations.
6. The books- that is what is about, and we do talk books.  No one recommended Where the Crawdad's Sing?  During a break we took a poll- I think everyone had read it.  We should have just discussed it.  A Gentleman in Moscow made it from the recommend list to the assigned list- wow! Every book that is recommended sounds Great- it is going to be a good year.

Life on Newark-Granville Road- I say it every year, this night is special and appreicated and productive!  Want the list? Want to be on the distribution list- just let me know! We are open and welcoming- another special part of this group. It may take some time to get the gist and we may not be for everyone but if you want to give it a try- join us on the 1st Monday of the month.  We go back to Cherry Valley Lodge Oct 7th!
