Christmas on Newark Granville Road 2010

Now I know how the  idea of "freezing time" came to be.  There have been several moments this week where I've wanted to just.....stop the world and just live in the amazing, joy, contentment and happiness in these moments.

Last Sunday- hosting the woman who grew up in this house and her husband and some friends for a dinner party was amazing.  There were so many reasons it was a truly beautiful night.  Clare's tour was precious and the good energy from the stories and memories still fills the whole house and each of us.

Yesterday's FPC 4:30 service (thank goodness, as at  a point in the afternoon I thought it was 4 pm start and I paniced!!) was beautiful. The children leading worship in all ways was incredible.  Thank you to all those that made this happen- watching Clare and Peter ring chimes with friends- something I'll cherish and carry with me forever. Sally and the other under 5 years olds belting out "go tell it on the mountain" as they turned and swayed for the benediction- all I can say is AMEN!  Each child radiated what we all strive for peace, love, hope and joy in their own special and unique way.

And now- can I just freeze time right now.  What a beautiful morning. How blessed we are and I'm grateful, so grateful.  Santa exceeded the Leithauser children's expections and delivered a Wii.  I'm so happy he did.  I appreciate all of those that listened to the reasons I didn't want one and shared why they enjoy theirs- mostly the intergenerational play.  (Our kids already asked if we may pack it to take to MD when we visit grandparents!!)  Joe and I were reminising on how we remember the "pong" christmas and the fun that brought our homes.  Good news- now my children say they can share more at The Works since they have their own....ha ha...looking forward to exploring more easily other exhibits with them!!

Some fun "overheards on Newark-Granville Road"  today:
Clare:  "I'm so happy with Santa on SO many levels"
Sally:  "How did that Santa get that big (mommy's antique) bike down the chimney?...hmmmm....maybe Santa got daddy's stolen bike back and painted it for you mommy!" (future blog topic by the say- you'll have to tune in February!!)  Peter- uncovered the Nationals jersey immediately and screamed with delighted enthusiasm- "Dad-Dad-Dad- it's Zimmerman's!! It's Zimmerman's"  later he told Joe- this is my first jersey of a player that still plays for the team!!
Joe- sitting reading on the couch looking at his stocking-"do you know the restraint I used, not to dig into my "baseball forecaster" before today!!"

Watching all 3 kids help Sparky Anderson into his new "crab" dog collar- darling.  The girls gathering their new dolls and old dolls together to introduce them and make them all look "bue T ful".

I sit here looking at the beauty of a white christmas on Newark-Granville Road, listening to the kids play nicely with their new toys, enjoying coffee in a gorgeous pink and green mug, eating YUMMY homemade sticky buns (thank you mary) and reflecting on how we got to this place- so much support, love, hope and joy has created this peace and happiness- I am blessed.

I'll savor all the joy today will provide with the hope of fun tomorrow- addressing and preparing our holiday cards!! I enjoy this process and look forward to taking the time to do this in my "vacation mode" which I'm loving!!  Here is what we're sharing, based on the fabulous artwork by our friend Carlo!  If you scroll down you learn much about the year as well- the letter barely covers all the good times on Newark-Granville year and beyond in 2010.

2010 Christmas Letter:

Yes the Leithausers are feeling a bit like our life in 2010 was snow globe- but all is beautiful and filled with fun!  See if you can find:

Susan dressed for work!  In May Susan traded in the volunteer badge for a full time position in Development at The Works (www.attheworks.org)!

Joe in his plaid pants! Fun Pant Fridays delighted his Cardinal Health co-workers!

The Granville School bus. In the fall Sally went to KINDERGARTEN!!, Peter to 3rd grade and Clare headed out to 4th grade at the Intermediate school!

Sparky Anderson- (spaniel mix) - misses the family but is happy to report a successful Turkey Trot run this year!

The Terminator Lice Comb- yup we got em…just wanted to share this must have if you need to deal with this annoying menace.

Clare (10) the ballerina- another great year with the COYB Nutcracker performance- she added puppet, Chinese and party to scene performances!

Peter (8) ready for action- baseball, basketball, sports camp in Maryland, swimming, and even violin recital in his cleats!

Sally (5) never far behind- keeps up well with everyone and cared for by fabulous helpers in our village including her St. Ed’s preschool’s enhancement Kindergarten program!

Vote sign- the family thanks everyone who helped the Granville Library levy pass in 2010!

Chinese characters- these represent Susan’s trip to China with the Licking County Chamber in April 2011!  Exciting times!  Please note this will put the annual derby party on hold in 2011.

We wish you Happiness, Harmony, Peace, Fortune, Joy, Tranquility and Love (these are what the characters symbolize!)

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!

Winter wonderland on Newark-Granville Road this week and that is fine with us! If it is going to be cold we might as well have snow!  We're enjoying the festive activities of the holidays. Thanksgiving was indeed a weekend full of things we were grateful for- primarily family time.  Thanks to Nana and Pap and the Leithauser clan for making the trek.  In the Nutcracker, Clare did a wonderful job peformaing as a mouse, a girl in party scene, a snow flake, a puppet and chinese dancer!  Peter and Sally ran the 5K turkey trot with Joe, sparky anderson and me.   We loved the impromptu post party to toast the event in our kitchen to dry off!  We squeezed in the trip to get the Christmas tree with Scott and Ann's family- a great December tradition.

We hope everyone reading this finds joy this holiday season!  The Granville Leithausers embrace the simple pleasures: opening christmas cards, family movie nights, friend's festive gatherings to name a few.  We'll keep you posted as the season progresses, along Newark-Granville Road.

Beautiful Art for so many reasons.....

on Newark- Granville Road and a bit further at The Works!  At Bryn Du, the Renville Artist  show will be fabulous as always.  Supporting this show, the wonderful artists, this program is a good thing to do and will be a treat for you.  Details:  http://www.bryndu.com/

At the Works in downtown Newark just 7 miles away a beautiful art exhibit that educates and inspires opens Friday- the reception is 6 to 8 pm.  If you can't make the show please stop by to see Longaberger baskets that are original and unique and haven't been on exhibit before!  Dave Richard's art is gorgeous and not to be missed!  http://www.attheworks.org/ExploreTheWorks/ArtGalleries/MainArtGalleryCurrentExhibit.aspx  This show goes through January!!

The other thing to share is the good work done by the people behind the scenes with this show.  I know many people that make this happen and am inspired by their talent, dedication and good work!  As we approach thanksgiving and take note on what is good in our community these exhibits reflect a part of all there is for which to be grateful.  These efforts need our support- our financial contributions, our time, our voices to spread the word.

Favorite Things on the street.....

I love summer but each season has its beauty and joy.  This weekend delivered one of the activities that is a thrill for all five Leithausers in the Fall- leaf pile jumping!  This was Sally's year to be the one insisting the time had arrived.  She inspired or possibly ordered Joe to get the rake and then all three kids joined in with the raking task to create the biggest, deepest, best pile and the coolest fort.  The good news is we have a few more fun weekends (and bus stop mornings) to enjoy the piles- we have a whole tree that still needs to drop its leaves on Newark-Granville Road!

A new favorite to share on Newark-Granville road is:  www.clearruncottage.com  It is a darling guest house just down the street toward town. Tim Hughes has refinished this charming abode. We bought the overnight opportunity at the GES/GIS PTO auction and had need for family to stay there last week. Tim kindly prepped the house for my sister and brother-in-law with very short notice. We were all impressed and pleased with the beautiful accommodations and hospitality.  If you need a place in town, please consider this guesthouse as an option. We're so lucky to have amazing places like the Granville Inn, the new Welsh Hills Inn and now Clear Run Cottage- a two-bed room guesthouse.  I'm shouting it from Newark-Granville Road- come visit Licking County- so many amazing things to do, see and experience!!

Lucky me......I had the opportunity to venture off Newark-Granville Road this weekend.  I love the fabulous touchstone this road has become and all that it provides- support, shelter, protection and love. I've always enjoyed travel but juggling the realities of our busy lives limits how much I go beyond home base. This provides great joy and appreciation for trips when I do make the investment in the opportunity. The payoffs are fabulous so I can't help but share!

Just home from NYC where I wasn't far from Newark-Granville road as friends from Granville provided the opportunity and encouragement to make the trip.  The chance to take in the energy, incredible sights, and the time to just be with good people was truly priceless. The ideas and inspiration and conversation and celebration simply filled me.  The logistics involved with the multitude of processes that run that city amaze and astound- it is humbling. The lesson of the weekend from stepping away- hospitality matters and all I benefitted from this weekend are amazing- relationships are sweet and robust and are keys to happy lives.

Across the Generations....

On Saturday I watched Newark-Granville Rd neighbors do the sweetest things. I was touched and proud.  I was at Sharon Brook retirement center with Miss Linda's piano group.  We try not to pass up these life lessons of performance.  I'm grateful for this low-key approach. When I took piano lessons at Clare's age it was a big recital only once a year and I'd get so nervous.  Linda gives the children opportunity to play in a big living room with friends and residents scattered and appreciative.

So this event in itself makes me happy, as I know the residents and staff appreciate the interaction across generations and the gift of live music.  Saturday held an extra moment of beauty.  A young boy walked in and immediately made friends with an older woman in a wheelchair watching the birds.  His mother and brother moved on to the music area but this child stayed and engaged in conversation- nice.  Later he was encouraged to help push her chair to be closer to the music.  She then asked if he would like to sit on her lap. The child said- do you want me to? The woman said- if you want to it would be nice.  The child gently put himself on her knees and allowed her to embrace and take in the beauty that filled all of her senses.  They talked quietly and observed the recital.  The joy on this woman's face stays with me. Not only did the child's comfort across generations touch me easy but his mother's ability to allow this exchange. Our world is filled with terrible things that don't easily allow these caring moments to happen-I was lucky to witness this beauty first hand and I'm glad it connected to Newark-Granville Road.

HATSOFF! Prep!!

Hello friends!

I hope you've had a great labor day weekend!  I'm working with the fabulous HATSOFF co-chairs and volunteers to put finishing touches on our HATSOFF efforts including guest list (so please send in your reservation by mail or on line http://www.attheworks.org) and our catalog for the auction!  I've talked to a few of you about auction items and will follow-up with paperwork and pick-up times! Anyone else who has something they like to donate to this effort I'd greatly appreciate it.  This really is a great way to showcase your business and help an important cause.  Most of us can find someone way to donate to this event- parties, services, favorite items, artwork, tickets- the fun of auction is connecting people to exciting opportunities and services, but this only happens because of great donors.  I love to help people create creative and innovative contributions!

HATSOFF! is a significant fundraiser for The Works to benefit operations- operations that have a tremendous impact in our community.  My last few months working at The Works have provided insight into all the amazing things The Works provides for people of all ages-learning, interacting and connecting to history, art and technology.  Not to mention the contribution it provides in downtown Newark- our county seat.  (on that note this Friday is Music in the Courtyard- Tom Caroll and friends are entertaining).

HATSOFF on October 2nd will be wonderful.   This event delights each year and truly gets better and better building on efforts of past volunteer efforts- like the Works itself!  Leigh Ann and Brooke (co-chairs) are creating an elegant and festive venetian holiday we'll all enjoy.  Some things to look forward to on October 2nd:

-family style, seated dinner- the menu sounds delicious and great wines from small italian vineyards have been matched to the traditional italian meal.
(get a group for a table- let us know who- or let us know some input and we'll build a great table- we can do this for singles too!!)
-live auction with art that will wow by local favorites including Paul Hamilton and Don Gunnerson!
-chance- always new and creative- masks this year will give access to Meyers and Pugh's donation!
-silent auction that always has items you won't want to miss
-live music by an incredible band that has been featured at the Italian Festival in Columbus.
-and always people that make The Works and our community what it is- a place to learn, play and create!

Questions, ideas, thoughts- please let me know!!  Can't attend- let me know and I'll help you access the catalog and connect with someone to bid for you!!
THANK YOU for your assistance and support of this community gem.

Warmly,

Susan

Summer Break....a good thing!

Back to school this week evokes in me a desire to look back at summer break as it was a great summer!  Swim team, pool time, beach fun, CAMPS, grandparents, cousins, seafood, books on the beach, books by the pool, swim meets, ice cream, farmers markets, parades, running races, carnivals, FAIR- ohhhh so much fun!!  Venturing off of Newark-Granville Road is a good thing, coming home is a good thing and going back to school after a fabulous break- a good thing!!

Connection Books!

I can't help myself- I have to blog about "My Stroke of Insight" by Jill Bolte Taylor.  I am so glad I read this book- it provided many "ah-has" and lessons. I also was amazed by this woman's courage and strength. Her recovery is inspiring and her knowledge fascinating.  Right brain, left brain has always intrigued me- this book put it in simple terms that apply to my life right now.  It is always exciting when you read a book and it accompanies your own life in someway. This happens a good bit for me and I'm grateful.  The best news is the book experience will be even greater once book club discusses it...hmmm I need to understand the parts of brain that make that so for me....

I do know that the right side of my brain is happy this weekend. It is taking in all the fun and festivity, tradition and celebration the 4th of July in central Ohio brings!  It is also my birthday weekend and that right brain helps me embrace and enjoy all that means!  I just picked up Jenny's Ice Cream at River road coffee- big smiles!!  Last year I baked my own cake- this year I bring my own ice cream!!  My left brain likes to try and take over with re-thinking and over scheduling, the packing for the kids (YEAH JOE for taking that one) being annoyed with traffic patterns, etc.....the good news is I find balance and embrace the moment thanks to all the goodness around me on Newark-Granville road.

Welcome Summer!

I love this day- the longest day of the year, summer solstice.  But know that I LOVE summer so it makes sense for me to love its first day!  There are so many things about summer I love and the first day is often filled with them. Today we welcomed summer on Newark-Granville Road by embracing the simplicity of the day.  My run with a friend was lovely- much to chat about so it went quickly. The morning was clear with a sparkly sunrise- the dew on the warm grass makes me smile. I was productive at work.  The kids enjoyed a similar pace- checking in mid day and then greeting me with happy counts of their activities that had them enjoying being at home during the daylight hours- they even baked!  We had a dinner with some fish and farmers market broccoli and then headed to the last T-ball practice.  It was a lovely night to watch happy kids and families on the ball field. We wrapped it up with some yummy Whit's frozen custard and again soaked in the beauty of Granville on a warm summer evening.

There is just something in the air- happiness, a good appreciation of bounty that is coming.  Certainly there are challenges in our world and lives but for some reason today lets me move them away for a bit.  I can simply enjoy the daylight and all it brings, gives and warms.  The evening is peaceful and soft- the day seems is filled with the extra hours I long for- so much to do on Newark-Granville Road and today provides hope, reward, magic and happiness that what needs to get done will.  I hope you've enjoyed this day and the summer brings much bounty!

Hearing the Stories....

Based on my last post I should be blogging about this exciting day's figure eight loops- my family's movement through life's cycles- little eights.  The school changes are special (Clare is learning about the intermediate school (4th grade) and sally "graduates" from preschool this morning.  And I'm really looking forward to toasting a dear friend at a great place with good people around as she turns 40 at dinner tonight.

But the things I have to share is the stories I heard yesterday, the opportunity to be enveloped- is that the right word- yes- I was comforted like a beautiful fabric- in the stories of these quilts- these amazing pieces of art.  You won't want to miss the opportunity to take in this art work at THE Works-details below, opening tonight- but try hard to meet and know the artist (Mary Helen Fernadez Stuart) or her family and friends- have them tell you what they know about the pieces!

Our community is a beautiful place and this art's show demonstrates that point in lovely ways.....

Whispers & Echoes of Women's Work: Public Reception

Friday, May 28 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

The Works welcomes Mary Helen Fernandez Stewart's Whispers and Echoes of Women's Works exhibit to the Main Art Gallery on May 28th with a Public Reception from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. giving visitors the opportunity to meet and talk with this fascinating artist who makes her marks with a needle and thread. Stewart has been making her works of art for more than 25 years. Figure Eights...

I'm sure you've heard (or read) my thoughts on life being "figure eights" and I'm looping back to another side...I'm returning to work.  I've loved being on the "stay at home mom" side of the 'eight" these past five years- I've made amazing friends, enjoyed fabulous time with the kids and family and engaged in our community in ways work didn't allow.   My theory on "figure eights" is also the motion- we're in motion, we're not standing still, we're drawn to things, we move away from things only to often return.

My figure eight motion right now not only draws me back to work, but to a place my family loves- THE WORKS! We come and go a great deal from this key place in our central ohio community.  I'm in week two and grateful for the opportunity to serve, learn, play, build and benefit.  The kids are excited and supportive. It is all happening and falling into place with such ease thanks to great care providers/friends that know the kids!  I'm grateful for the kind words, offers to assist and celebrate this exciting time for the Leithausers on newark-granville road. I'll keep you posted on this new perspective!

Thank you and Ahhhh.....

"Let out our breath" Ahhhhh- that is what I'm feeling this morning.  A fellow board member (who also lives on Newark-Granville Road) summed up my own feeling very well with the point about letting out our breath...it is wonderful to have the community's participation and support to pass the GPL library levy! The shared work continues with the upcoming strategic plan and other library business! I'm also so happy for our over all community-Licking County Library's levy passed too- hoorayyyyy!

On a personal note I'm so grateful for this amazing learning opportunity. I've gained so much insight and perspective on individual's talents and gifts, leadership and group dynamics- things that fascinate me. The opportunity to serve Granville and assist with the Licking County campaign has taught me things that will stay with me and serve me well.

I feel for the many that worked on levy campaigns that didn't pass.  Don't give up- take the passion and care for your organiztion or cause and keep going! One of my lessons in the past few months is that the challenge of finding funding is like the search for the perfect golf swing, runner's high, the dog chasing his tail- it is never ending, unique and the reward is in the pursuit!

Derby Wrap Up.....

****Dishes left at Derby can be picked up in the green house- door is open! We still have some "earnings" to distribute!!  THANK YOU to everyone for the amazing participation- food was fabulous, kids just darling playing and engaging with one another and another fun race.  This event is something we love to do. We missed friends will ill kids, sporting events, etc...1st Saturday in May 2011 - save the date for the fun again!  Anyone who missed the race or wants more details visit: http://www.kentuckyderby.com/

Derby is extra special when it not only falls on the 1st Saturday in May but also the 1st day in May!  The strawberries are dipped in chocolate,  the mint is steeping in the simple syrup and the kids are out to their activities (thank you Nana/Pap and friends) and the calm before the storm has settled in.....do I dare type that with the forecast?!! On Newark-Granville Road I'm getting ready to put on my rain boots and help ward it off- we're prepared with our tent and will figure out what we need to do with what the day brings! Looking forward to sharing this special, fun day that brings really good people together.

Derby Party Details

We're enjoying spring because in Ohio we feel like the 1st Saturday in May kicks off Summer! And of course the 1st Saturday in May on Newark-Granville Road is all about the Kentucky Derby and bringing our friends from various parts of our life together!  You never know what will happen with this party but our hope is you enjoy catching up with us, one another and enjoying some fun traditions we like to share.

Details for 2010: I will update this as things come together and I remember things.....

-WEATHER- no rain, no rain, join us as we visualize a day like last year- clear skies, great friends....reality is rain or shine or snow- we've seen it all- come dressed for the weather!

-PARKING- always a challenge.  The churches on Newark-Granville Road and the golf course are a good option.  Drop off at our drive way and go back to Newark-Granville Road via Heckman's house (red brick)

-PONY-**One pony will be there- 75lb weight limit, there will be a show!  4 to 6 pm.....and as always we'll have stick ponies, bouncy spring ponies.... ***

-Guests/Invites- invites are going in the mail- help us encourage others to come- new folks to town, someone who slipped through the cracks- once invited, always invited- we love to include good people and Derby always hits at a very busy time of year.

-Busier than ever this year with the fun of an election!  Many of you know I'm chairing the Granville Library Levy as I serve on the Granville Library Board. I'm also helping out with the Licking County Levy.  Libraries all over Ohio have been affected by tax cuts on the state level- help your library in some way, some how- they play key roles in all of our communities.

But whatever is on your ballot- learn about it and plan now to VOTE to make a difference.

Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday May 1st!  And oh yes- party starts at 4, race is a 6 (it goes fast) pony rides 4-6, stay and enjoy until ?? live music at 4.....once invited always invited so if the paper invite missed you forgive us and come on over....

News to Share about me @THE WORKS!

You all know I pride myself on communication so I wanted you to hear this news from me.....

I was offered an interim job at a place my family and I already love, know and work for in a volunteer capacity
THE WORKS,  www.attheworks.org/

I'll start May 10 and in the role  of interim Director of Development through October- we'll assess the situation at that time when they commence the search for the Director of Development.

I'm excited, scared and thrilled for the opportunity to learn and help build on a special place in our community.   You all support my family, this organization and me so much!  Before I get too excited about THE WORKS- I need to  focus on the GRANVILLE LIBRARY levy, a Derby party (I  hope you're coming) and coordinating childcare!

Warmly with appreciation for your support,
Susan

Good things all around Granville....

There really is so much good going on in our area. In Granville alone you can now:
1. Get Jeni's Ice Cream- their slogan uses the word "splendid" and they're right! River Road Coffee is the go-to place! Try the Thai Spice or Salty Caramel...my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

2. The wine shop (and chef's table) at the Granville Inn! You must experience the fun of entering the red door (off courtyard- park in usual parking lot and walk beyond the front entrance) and seeing what they've created- it is lovely.  And it is filled with all sorts of goodies- I found the perfect beverage for tonight's dinner!

3. The Junto Club is Open! Lunch was delicious today.  Of course sitting outside and having lunch with a friend is always special but a unique and tasty sandwhich (accompnied by FANTASTIC warm olives) served on my favorite Lucky Cat bread is an extra treat. (This is the old Wine Cashe at River Road- under the Short Story.)

And downtown Newark, The Works is a drop off point for care packages going to the troops!  If you want more information on how to participate send me an email and send you the list of things that can be included! ssleithauser@roadrunner.com

Of course there are many other wonderful things happening- I just wanted to share a few that we'll be enjoying on Newark-Granville Road!

Good day!

Thank you John Weigand, Village Council members, Clare, Peter, Joe and Sally Leithauser and all the others that emailed, called, made a comment, wrote a letter, attended tonight's meeting, contributed and supported Granville Rotary's build a bridge to Raccoon Valley Park.  A big step forward occurred tonight to help make this a reality. Granville's Village council passed a resolution to financially support the ODOT grant application!  It was a good day on Newark-Granville Road.  (PS-the good day is also in part because of a very beneficial field trip to the Columbus Art Museum- the Chiholy exhibit is amazing-the paintings, basket/blanket collection and influence on pieces I've never seen are truly gorgeous and worth seeing in person- Denison alums/friends take note- special event on April 15th at 5:30- check out denison.edu/alumni- events!

We the People....

Our Spring Break theme this year was "we the people" since we went to DC and Maryland to have fun with our people- stoner family in maryland.  I'll update more about the fantastic, incredible time we had learning about our nation's history and government and enjoying amazing family time in many ways....what I want to share now is how inspired we were.

We the people- we all of us- anyone reading, our neighbors, kids, friends- can make a difference.  There are so many ways we can be involved to shape and influence our communities and this country.  We're all busy and over the next four weeks the life on Newark-Granville road is VERY full, luckily it is with things that involve us building our community- we hope you'll join us.

The first opportunity connects with the last post- please read below and help us build a bridge in Granville!! Join us at this Wed's (April 7)Village Council meeting (you don't have to live in the village to attend or speak) to share your thoughts at the public comment time (7:30) about the bridge to Racoon Valley Park- Clare and Peter are preparing their statements- yes our time in DC was very inspiring!

I look forward to sharing more details about being involved in later posts- thanks for reading and helping spread the word about the bridge to Raccoon Valley Park!

Building community....

Living on Newark-Granville road is a delight but there are some things that would make it even better....a bridge to Raccoon Valley Park which would also mean a bridge to River Road Coffee, Granville Fitness and the other great things offered on River Road....We love to ride our bikes, run and walk into the village but we'd like to go to these other places safely (and riding on Main street isn't an option.)  We love baseball, being able to ride bikes or take a run to see a game is something we'd really like to have happen and thanks to Granville Rotary it may happen!

Please help make it happen- let our village council members and township trustees know you care and you too want this bridge!

Know a source for funding- let John Weigand know (jweigand@cog-med.com or 740 587 1245)-just please do this ASAP- the April 7th Village Council meeting is key- talk to these folks before then- today-lets not miss out on an opportunity to strengthen our community's connectivity.  This bridge project has passed the initial phase of the Ohio Dept. of Transportation (ODOT) funding process.  80% of the funding of the project would be provided by ODOT enhancement grant. 20% of the cost needs to come from our community- great opportunity thanks to Rotary funds and time and coordination.

Interested in knowing more, helping this effort- contact John Weygand or me. My focus is the library levy ( vote May 4th- issue 4!!) however I can't help but spread the word about this opportunity to connect us to one another in active and happy ways.

Comments on a Classic.

You all know I love Lilly Pulitzer so it won't be surprising to know I love Liberty of London. I'm drawn to happy cheery colors and objects.  My father's Liberty of London ties always have made me smile- even as a child.  When Joe and I were in London a number of years ago a highlight of the trip was finding the Liberty of London store.  The visit is very clear in my mind- I learned a great deal about design and was impressed with the creative, stylish and beautiful things all in one place.

A few weeks ago my sister in law shared with me that Liberty of London was designing a line for Target. This week I happened to stop by for a quick errand at Target and immediately saw the Liberty dresses for women.  I made a beeline for the children's area and was rewarded with the most darling sundresses and bathing suits.  I wanted to squeal in delight- I think I may have.  I was giddy making my way through the store impressed with all the items with the sweet yet bold, statement making, pretty patterns on fabulous things- tea pots, note cards, blouses....I need to go back- I missed the ties for men!?!

Thank you Target and Liberty of London- I love when a classic is presented in good taste in an inclusive manner!

Oh the weather outside is......

....making me think of my childhood and smile!  I'm excited my kids are having the opportunity to sled and play like my siblings and I did! All of a sudden memories of sledding at the school's hill from the tennis court and the dog going with us- chasing kids down the hill and stealing hats- are flooding back to me.   One memory was triggered when we drove by our house the other day and Peter declared- "Sparky (our black and white mutt) is sledding at the Pfau's house!"  I quickly turned around and went back...sure enough the dog was having a grand time.  We parked, went over and called his name- poor dog was so confused- he was convinced his kids were bundled up and sledding. He looked from us to the those sledding numerous times before joining us to be escorted safely home.

Saturday night we were having our "romantic" (the word sent the kids happily running to bed) dinner when we noticed across the street- NIGHT SLEDDING! It was beautiful for so many reasons. The various shades of black, white and shadows, the silent happiness that was obvious from the kids energy and gestures, and the parents creation of such a unique opportunity.  It evoked  my memories of "night skiing".  I moved to Altoona, PA when I was a junior in high school.  I was quickly welcomed and embraced into the 3-year high school by some great sophomores.   One of the activities that was a treat for me was ski-club.  My parents were wise to let my brother and me do something they had never done- we learned a new skill that has brought many joys for years after high school and provided opportunity for great friendships. The time at Blue Knob on those evenings were very special and beautiful- just like Saturday Night's night sledding.

I could go on and on, as the memoires are as plentiful of the snowflakes this season! This is just a glimpse of what I'm seeing on Newark-Granville Road this winter!

Stating the obvious...

Denison has soooo much to offer!  Because Joe and I are Denison alums we know not to miss a Vail concert, or to visit the Denison website (www.denison.edu) to see what lectures are coming and figure out what sporting events we can make work with our schedule.  I'd like to encourage you to do the same thing and if you need some help with identifying buildings, parking, or anything else- like how early to go so you get a good seat- let me know!

We're very excited about our interaction with Denison tomorrow- Clare's 3rd-4th grade basketball team will get to play another 3rd-4th grade girls team during the Denison Women's 2 pm game! What a fun opportunity for the girls, Joe and the coaches and the spectators.... and it gets to Livingston Gym to see great athletic scholars playing basketball!  A few weeks ago some of the women on the DU team came to Clare's practice.  Good things happen when our inner communities connect- town and gown - go both ways and the playing field is a fun place to see this working well.

Another great opportunity reflecting what our community values- education, life long learning- is being offered by Welsh Hills Montessori School (welsh-hills.org)  A lecture series on Feb 11, March 25, April 22, May 13th all at 7 pm- wonderful topics with fabulous speakers- check out the website or look for the posters around town with more details!

Thank you to both of these academic institutions that make our community all the stronger by offering fabulous opportunities for learning and fun.

**Perfect timing- I just received an email encouraging me to bring friends to wonderful MLKing events on campus- check it out:http://www.denison.edu/offices/multicultural/events.html  An event to note is:

Martin Luther King, Jr. worship service on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in Swasey Chapel on the Denison University campus.  Our guest preacher for the occasion is the Rev. Dr. Gary Simpson, Denison class of 1984, a native of Columbus, Ohio and, since 1990, the Senior Pastor of the Concord Baptist Church of Christ in Brooklyn, N.Y.  His sermon title will be "Martin King and Our Lasting Imperative.

The New Year is off and running.....

Yes 2010 is here and I've had a great time in these first 10 days! Sally is officially 5 years old and celebrating that was wonderful.    My favorite comment was- oh yes today is my day (Jan 6-ephiphany) and the kings are coming to celebrate with me.  We celebrated at the Works - check out all the great things happening there in the near future! I hope you'll join me at some of these- let me know if you have questions, need more information.  You can visit the website at http://www.attheworks.org/ for more information too!

It has been a busy holiday season for an additional reason. I serve on the Granville Public Library Board and we're addressing the challenge of the state funding reductions. I've shared that I'm careful to focus my volunteer work on organizations that benefit my kids, the community kids but I've realized it goes a step further- I value and work for places that bring multiple ages together to strengthen a community- the library is indeed one of those places.  So it won't surprise you to learn I'm chairing the levy committee - (or maybe it will- a levy??) On May 4, 2010-please go vote!!  and learn more to help you vote at  http://www.granvillelevy.com

I'm learning so much about so many things-levy, government, libraries, Granville history, board dynamics and so much more!  It will be fun to post about this journey.  Some other commitments are being rearranged so I have the time for this extra work.  But I'll keep posting the basics- I'm sorry I'm a bit late in getting some of these fun January events!  Newark-Granville Road is in a great community and I look forward to seeing you soon.
