Wrappig up 2014 by cleanning up, looking back and smiling.

Good bye Babsie.  The blue Volvo station wagon I adored has left the station, make that garage. We tried to donate her last year but it didn't happen. I'm very pleased to say it happened today- just now.  I knew this would be the blog post opening so I had to wait until it really happened! Hip Hip Hooray for Joe and those that crossed this of the list- including his mother in law's strong suggestion at Tgiving.

It is the year end of clean-up- we've made progress on the stuff, crap, s!&* from the basement.  The pitch pile by the mail box to be picked up by Big O on Friday is a little embracing. We were hoping the pickers that drive by would of taken some by now- scrap metal galore out there.   If you know any, send them our way please.  The garage now has the to be reviewed pile and at least ya'll and the neighbors can't see that.  We've cleared off the kitchen table and can eat there but were a bit snug with items that need temporary new homes- the things safely kept in plastic tubs and now the piles of files I reviewed from a discarded file cabinet.

The smiles are plentiful today.  Babsie was a great car. We found her in Hagerstown- a special edition Volov wagon that was the shape we loved and had really comfy seats. 6 cylinders-she was fun to drive back and forth to MD and on family trips.  We named her as she originally came from Texas and two women I admire living there have the name Barbara with last name B and the nick name was Babsie.  I also smile as the car goes as stated above.   In that file cabinet I found my first resume printed at Leader Printing in 1990- my senior year at Denison.   How fun years later we get our Christmas Cards printed there.  I showed Sally ultrasound photos forgotten as they were nestled in my "Sally pregnancy file"- I had forgotten my maternal maturity- over 35- took me to Riverside for more frequent ultrasounds than the other two kids.  Swim team ribbons, itinerary from Scotland trip, letter I wrote to Joe before we were married. Some of the memories dusted off aren't the most happy and putting some in the trash feels good, feels right.  I'm amazed at what the mind retains albeit buried. How fascinating what triggers retrieve unattended to thoughts and I'm grateful for all of them.

It is a good way to wrap up 2014.  Today on Newark-Granville Road we make progress that includes the past and prepares us for the future.  We're connecting with our family in special ways. Welcome 2015 and the memories we'll make, save and share.   Thank you for being part of my 2014 and happy New Year to you.

should of had that yard sale…...

For quite some time- years I'm sure- I've wanted to have a yard sale. The inception of the idea- the basement.  Well today after removing almost everything in the basement due to flooding from the water main break on Newark-Granville Road, I wish I would of delivered on the idea.

I had every intention of posting a quick summary of our fabulous Christmas trip to Maryland.  The time with our darling 6 year niece and goddaughter in Baltimore was really amazing.  Gathering the full Stoner group in Hagerstown made for wonderful catch-up and memory making! It was the fastest week ever. We blinked and were heading home this early am to get Clare to bball practice. It felt like we were justing sitting at Tom's Ice Cream Bowl to kick-off the holiday trip.

We kept seeing the posts on Facebook about the water being off, pressure being affected, etc, etc…It wasn't until we pulled into our drive and saw all the gravel showcasing how much water must have passed our house.  Joe said- hmmmm - we might have a flooded basement- and he was right!   I'm happy to say we have support from the village and ServPro was on the job.  Tonight I type with the start of a mammoth trash pile by the mailbox, drying times to be stored or pitched in the queue in the back yard and the dining room and kitchen filled with to-dos.  The basement has fans and we'll get things in a good place to move forward. IT could be soooo much worse- snow and rain would made a much harder clean-up process.

Life on Newark-Granville Road will wrap the year up clean and more organized- this is a good week to take on the task- Joe is home! We won't be setting up that yard sale but we will make some trips to Goodwill. We are also in a great place arriving home today rested and happy. I'm not sure what day of the week is- little turned around but I'll get in sync!   I hope this finds you well and ready to wrap up the year and celebrate the full 12 days of Christmas.

the rest of the story from our holiday greeting card!

So I use to write the Christmas letter- even before I had other players in my life's stories. This reminds me that I have beautiful Creative Memory Scrapbooks from my single days post-college.  Now I have a blog and keep the cards we mail in December-ish short.  Years ago we figured out it was praticical to combine our two big mailings- our derby invite and our end/begining of year card together.  This year we did that with a strong theme.

So the picture you see is a picture of the kids- Clare 14, Peter, 12 and Sally 9 (but 10 in early Janauary!) holding a beautiful painting done by David Ghiloni- wonderful Newark, Ohio artist.  Dave donated the painting to Rotary for the live auction.  My wonderful hustband bought it for me.  So Christmas came early in my life on Newark-Granville Road.  The painting is featured on the back of our card as an invitation- an invitation to join us as you are able on the 1st Saturday in May.  This party is a fun gathering wiht a great theme.  I started this party in Omaha, NE with Ellen Shideler Wheeler, continued it in the Detroit area, the year I moved to Kentucky I went to the Derby but had a Triple Crown party.  Joe Leithauser attended that said party- and from then on the Run for the Roses Party was in Ohio.  It ebbs and flows with attendance and children's activities- last year soda was the big addition.  Read past Derby party updatees or stay tuned for more in April about this year's Derby fun.  Just know- once invited, always invited and we'd love to see you.

So the kids and our lives on Newark-Granville Road this past year.  A wonderful year, wonderful kids. Not perfect- the day we took this photo- I embraced a day we were dressing up.  We still dress for church. My mother is in my head and I like to have one place, one day a week where we make an effort.  God deserves it.  I don't judge others that don't- there are days I'm envious of my friends in more casual wear. I do dress more than once a week-but some traditions are hard to let go of and this is one for me.  The kids aren't pushing back terribly and it gave me a time to capture a picture.  Peter is funny- puts on coat and tie for school pics but most days he is in sweats! The daylight played with the photo's quality- but I'm not complaining- the sun shining is always welcome.

The tree was cut down at Messeralls on a rainy day- it was the only day that worked with basketball games and practices, social dates and work.  We walked and walked and walked to find one- they were all too tall. Finally Joe the hero said- pick one and I'll cut it to work and he did.  Walking and hiking is a great way to spend time on Newark-Granville Road.  Clare, Peter and Joe hiked part of the Appalachian Trail for spring break this year- spent a night out south of Rt. 70 and finished up in Harpers Ferry, WVA.  It snowed, it was cold.  It was something Joe has always wanted to do! Sally and I remained with my parents and looked forward to the 2nd part of our spring break trip in Washington, DC.

Our other trips have been to the mountains of WVA.  We're happy Clare is so happy at Camp Alleghany and enjoy the drop-off and pick-up times in the Green Mountains.  We so value the old and new friends we get to connect with while she gets her all girls, old fashioned summer fun- sleeping in a platform tent, swimming and canoeing in a river, eating home-made southern food in the screened in dining hall and singing around the camp fire. Sally will join her this year and learn the BLUE team songs- ra-ra-ghany!  The pattern has become to pick up Clare and progress to the family vacation at OBX.  We love the cousin time, reading time, family cocktail time and dinners while we're all under one roof.  We missed Matthew's family this year but used the smaller group to try a new house- we loved it!  The sand, cool salt water and relaxation was great therapy for my recovering broken ankle!!  I did it on the tennis courts and healed well after surgery.  This pushed us over to the golfing side of MCC and have found another beautiful retreat!

Kids activities are plentiful- Clare and Sally love spring time lacrosse while Peter loves the baseball field.  In the fall Peter and Clare ran cross country and Sally returned to the soccer field with a great coach and group of girls.  Clare also played field hockey club- no problems with our focused teenager- love the endorphins! Over the summer Sally and Peter swim in the summer league at MCC- Clare did an academic camp, babysitting and CA prep. All three are playing basketball now- Clare on the 8th grade school team- requiring her to dress up on game days. Just watching the synchronized warm-ups makes me smile.  We're so grateful for the coaches, volunteers and players that make all these sports happen- our kids sporting skills are not fantastic but they learn a great deal and stay physically active which is good.  All are doing well in school and we love and are grateful for our teachers.  Joe's love of math is a big part of what is happening here in the evenings with homework. Clare is the reader right now and coaching Peter.  Sally takes care of all of us and makes sure we all have our plan.  Peter makes us laugh is the best fan, supporter, coach to his sisters.  We love our church- First Pres in Granville- giving us great opportunities to care about one other and others and grow our faith. We're very proud of our kids and enjoy making who goes where when how happen.

Joe is at Cardinal Heath in IT- I still say he is an internal consultant. he loves his projects and team that executes. He runs as often as he can at lunch time enjoying 5Ks with the kids.  He is not coaching basketball this year- 1st time in a long time.  I'm at The Works (attheworks.org) and grateful such a place exists and I get to help make it go and grow.  In 2016 we'll celebrate the 20th anniversary. It was a great year for me at work with HATSOFF! volunteers breaking all records and making an incredible event happen.  Speaking of Reunions- Joe and I are involved with our Denison 25th Reunion!! We so hope to see our college friends back in Granville for this special event!

Living in Granville on Newark-Granville Road is amazing for so many reasons- the kids will tell you for walks, bike rides and quick trips to Whit's (now closed for the winter break) but we'll say it is because of the values of this community. We care so well for one another here in many ways- in academic arenas like Math Counts and at The Works, artistic and sporting avenues.  We have a lot of fun too.  It is a great home base as we travel to meet old and new friends from around the world.

I could keep typing to tell you about my family and Joe's, other trips we've taken- Joe and I got way twice this year as a couple- loved the time celebrating Betsy and Bill's wedding and dear friends successful campaign. But most of it is on the blog if you go back. We want to stay in touch, share the joy and let you know we are here for you and hope to see and talk to you soon.  Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Holidays to you.  Thanks for reading- this was a long one!

O Christmas Card, O Christmas Card, how lovely are your pictures….

Lucky me- the past two days I've been the one to get the mail. I love love love to get the mail in December. This may be my favorite part of December- Christmas Cards!  Ya'll don't disappoint.  Your families are gorgeous. Your choice of greetings sweet and some of your are creative and innovative!  Today's giant envelope was delightful!!  Thank you to all those that have mailed us Christmas cards.  And a thank you to the electronic versions we've received too- I get it!

So where is our Christmas card you ask?  Well you all know this will be where you get your "back story"- the what was happening when we took the photo and all the other things we want to share that don't fit on 4x6 card.  You all know that one year we sent a Valentines Card and last year the card mailed after Christmas- was it a New Year's Card- nope just the Leithausers embracing their love of the 12 days of Christmas and celebrating well into the new year.  You've read every year about how we wrap it up after or on epiphany- Sally's birthday, my Ga-ga's birthday- just like my family did.

I'm happy to report Leader Printing came through once again.  We shared an idea and they made it happen.  And while I type elves are working on our cards.  We'll do our best to get them out on the 2014 schedule- by December's end!  Don't hold your breath- nothing overly creative or beautiful but it represents us well and invites you to our annual Derby Party on the first Saturday in May.

I've shared a photo with the way we're displaying our wonderful holiday greetings.  Shirley Hale made this for us years ago.  We also have a fun Santa basket filled with last year's cards.  The first addresses put on our cards our simply the ones in the basket.  Then we move on to those we go through life with on committees and carpools, coworkers and long standing pen-pals. Family sometimes makes it- oops last year I had to hand delivery my parents card.  I remember my Mom putting cards on the back of our front door- it was festive, but the tape didn't stick with weather shifts and they were always falling.  I love the creative displays folks do- one friend with the laundry line string in the kitchen- love it!  How do you display your- what do you do with yours.  Long ago I kept a photo album of the family photos. I will pick that up again and dig out some old ones to compare the kids growing up.  That was a sweet card a local family did- then and now of school age kids- one in college- love it!

Life on Newark-Granville Road loves mail and is grateful for the wishes you send our way- paper, prayer, cyber and voice.  We value your old and new friends so very much and wish you all much love, happiness, peace and joy in this special season.

constant motion, other opportunties, what do you do to get in the Spirit?

Objects in motion tend to stay in motion….I feel like I prove this Newton Law of Motion pretty well in December!  There are so many wonderful things to take in this month, so many ways to be in the "spirit" and an endless to-do, or could do list!  I crossed a few things off the list today but feel like the water on the beach- it filling right back with other- like to dos.

Follow-up to my post about the Denison concerts- I hope readers will pay attention to happenings on campus and take part! We did not make it to the bluegrass ensemble performance which was too bad- hope to make it in February.  We did enjoy Lessons and Carols- if that doesn't put you in the Christmas spirit I don't know what will.  What fun to sing beloved carols and I lucked out with wonderful harmonies behind me!! We also took in the Women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon- know these games only ask for donations and are wonderful ways to support these young intelligent athletes!  Division III sports are fun and they all really enjoy having "townies" in the stands.  Our kids love the games and opportunity to be on Denison's beautiful campus.

We baked cookies the other day- life on Newark-Granville Road stays in motion. The butter and supplies on the counter for a full week- it was time.  I'm not the most patient baker with kids and this weekend was no different. Sally was a trooper and we produced a batch.  I've declared them raspberry chocolate chip wreathes instead of thumbprints but they are tasty.  This recipe was passed down to me by Beth Jenkins- my Granville adopted Grandmother I met at Denison.  It makes me think of those frozen raspberry yogurt with chocolate covering Popsicles I had when I was young. The flavors go very well together.  Years ago Joe asked if these could be "our Christmas" cookies.  I said yes so it is a to-do I add to the "should do, would like to, if I have time to" list.  We had a chunk of time on Saturday and we snagged it.  My mother's sand tarts are the very best Christmas cookies and it isn't Christmas until I have some of hers. One year she mailed them to me as she knew I needed them.

I hope your lives are finding the Christmas spirit.  It can be hard at this time of year.  I feel for those missing loved ones and I hold you in thought and prayer.  Believe it or not my life does allow me to slow down, even rest to think, pray and reflect on why we need these occasions and opportunities to get into the spirit.  Church on Sunday at FPC and in Swasey was a special way to reflect, pray, think and feel the spirit for me. The Spirit is all around us all year long and I'm grateful for the reminder and opportunity to celebrate on Newark-Granville Road.

event to-dos this weekend!

I realize I've strayed from one of original intents of my blog…to share events and happenings around town and why I think you should partake.  I'm a why girl- want me to do some thing- give me the reason why.  I learn about a process, opinion- I want to know why you think, do, feel that.  Know Meyers-Briggs- my type connects to the why well.  I also like to share the why I am up to what I'm doing so you know more about me and may want to share what it is I'm up to in my life on Newark-Granville Road.  So here are some events and why I will be attending…..

I want to make sure friends know Denison has many events open to the public and we should all be paying attention to the community calendar:  http://denison.edu/events-calendar   Friday night- tomorrow night is the Denison Student Bluegrass Concert- 7 pm Swasey- if you like bluegrass this is not to be missed- go early for a good seat.    Sunday night- Lesson and Carols- a very special Christmas Service that is so well shared by the Denison community.  7 pm Swasey.   So more "why" go- support the students and staff making all this happen. They've worked hard and the results are wonderful. They are FREE!  You'll be touched in ways not possible by TV- this is live music and readings at a very high quality.  I guarantee you'll be glad you went.  Lots of other great concerts and happenings. I'm sorry I missed the musical Rent last weekend.

Life on Newark-Granvillle  is feeling the Christmas spirit through quality times together- these events provide these opportunities.  The 11 am First Presbyterian Church service has the Youth Choir singing as part of the service- know you are invited to this service as well.  Share with me your special events and what takes you to a joyous or reflective place during this important season.

Signs of the times…..

What are the first things you pull out to decorate for Christmas?  Each of us have our items that help put us in the spirit here on Newark-Granville Road?  Of course it isn't just one thing, but the arrival of special memory items in layers.  Joe puts the fresh pine roping we get from the boy scouts around the outside doorways- a great sign Christmas Season is here. Bonus points he found the jingle bell wreath for the front door!  Tonight I found the red sled from his parents and skates to add to the front door scene. For me it is hanging the painted wood cheery wreath on the mailbox post  that delights me and the sure fire way to get me really in the mood- Martha's wreath! Martha is my white sequoia.

The Christmas Tree was gleaned from Messeralls on Saturday- in the rain.  There is a story but I'll wait to share.  Since we were unable to find time to partner with the Westerville Leithausers-a long standing tradition- a new tradition has been declared- share the Christmas Tree procurement story with one another when we gather for our family Christmas time together.  Instaead I will share the reason we go to Messeralls- one year Clare and I were ill so Joe and young Peter ventured out to meet the cousins to find a tree.  Sally was an infant and after two or three depending on who is telling the story-tree farms they couldn't find "the perfect tree"-for me the perfect tree is fat/wide and the kids know it. Joe was ready to give up but Peter said- no we can't, we must not go home without a tree.  One last stop on the way east found Joe, four year old Peter and a sleeping baby at Messeralls.  They left Sally sleeping in the car with the a heads-up to the family - grandmother types running the farm that she was asleep-and ventured to find a tree.  The tree they cut down and brought home was indeed the perfect tree.  We've had grand adventures ever since and love returning to the beautiful acreage and delightful family that runs the tree farm.  Anyway- this year's tree is now up, it has lights and we'll decorate on Thursday night!  It sure looks nice this way too and is pretty from the road as the tree is in the front window wishes all those that pass by on Newark-Granville Road a Merry Christmas.

Joe brought the boxes of holiday decor up weeks ago and they have been in wait. For some reason tonight was the night.  Sally and I jumped in and distributed the like items to various spots around the 1st floor.  The nutcrackers stand guard on the mantle, the Santas are on the blanket chest. The tree collection returns to the dining room that is the tree room- more evergreens in there at this time of year.  Angels and the porcelain gifted ornaments take me further into a happy holiday place.

Life on Newark-Granville Road is filled with signs of Christmas past, making Christmas present cheery and bright and creating memories we'll all carry into the Christmas future.  We're not done- the barrel of ornaments await for later in the week and there is much cleaning and clearing to do.  It is a bit crowded and cluttered right now…but what else is new in our lives on Newark-Granville Road!

Thank you for sharing your holiday signs- the tree at the entrance to Bryn Du is beautiful.  The lights at the neighbors across the street make a stunning view from our front windows looking out onto Newark-Granville Road.  The lit and decorated evergreens in town and the giant pine that was not cut down years ago with its large ball ornaments on the start of West Broadway.  Thank you to all those that have given these items that signal the joy Christmas provides for our lives on Newark-Granville Road.

Thanksgiving Two Days of Togetherness….

What a lovely Friday it is- some will call it black Friday- Joe did a bit of on-line shopping and my mom did some local shopping.  For me it is Holiday Homecoming Friday- always the day after Thanksgiving- a lovely day at The Works where families bring loved ones to enjoy the special activities The Works offers.  It is also great to connect with The Works family- volunteers and staff that make the event happen.  What fun to see recent graduate back to help and meet a board member's grandson we've met via iphone photos only.  I packed my turkey sandwich complete with moist thanks to bringing turkey breast, stuffing, cranberry chutney and lettuce for my lunch.  I put the Utz chips my parents brought to me on the sandwich when I enjoyed it this afternoon!

It is also opening night for COYB's Nutcracker! Sally and friends are ready.  I delivered her at 1 pm, putting her hair in a bun and feeling the happy energy at The Midland.  I snuck back in to put a coke a cola with her dinner bag in the green room.  I love that Sally has bonded with friends from the community and knows the terminology and hard work that goes into a show like this.  It will be fun to dress up with my Mom, daughter and dear friend to take in dinner and show tonight.  It will be the way to kick-off the holidays and say farewell to the Tgiving weekend.  I almost threw away the pumpkins (compost) and put out some Christmas decor this afternoon…not yet…today in my life on Newark-Granville Road I still savor Thanksgiving's family focus.

Yesterday was certainly a lovely day- Thanksgiving 2014 was all about life on Newark-Granville Road- we never left!  Having my parents here is wonderful- it was a small gathering and quite lovely.  The Granville Turkey Trot raising funds for The Food Pantry is a wonderful tradition.  Amazing number of good folks out and about and fun to connect with them while getting exercise.  Clare and Peter ran hard and well- Peter had a personal best and beat his sister.  Sally joined a darling group of girls and enjoy independent time- they're growing up.  I loved trotting with friends while my parents dog pulled me along- my ankle did well.  Wrapping up the event at dear friends with bloody maries and muffins was something I've wanted to do for years- our low key small gathering let it happen. At home we put our turkey in close to noon and enjoyed our own resting time with the Macy's Day parade and dog show!  The afternoon was about prepping delicious traditional food and breaking bread in gratitude. Life on Newark-Granville Road wrapped up with family movie night-a classic- Forrest Gump.  A good time continued today and life on Newark-Granville Road loves two day of togetherness.

what are you doing right now?

What am I doing right now on Newark-Granville Road?  I'm looking forward to seeing my parents tomorrow!  I called them on the way home to report I had picked up our 17 lb turkey! Mom loves our IGA fresh turkeys.  Tomorrow he will brine and then my mom will help me roast our dinner.  This year we'll eat a bit later, enjoy the day of focus on family, fun and gratitude!

I'm waiting for my oyster stew to finish. I had left over oysters I just remembered while standing in line at IGA.  The Snowville cream I bought to make Tgiving dinner all the more scrumptious is a great addition to the stew!

I'm thinking about the future, I'm reflecting on the past and I'm grateful for where I am right now. Life's experiences and relationships give us so very much.  I have homemade sauerkraut in my fridge thanks to relationships and friends in Licking County. I have a husband and kids cheering on the Big Red basketball team, a daughter happily rehearsing on stage at The Midland, friends I'm in contact with hugs, texts, emails and facebook.  I have a dog at my feet and a good night's sleep ahead- my life on Newark-Granville Road is pretty wonderful.

I hope this finds you grateful for what is in your life and I'm pleased you are reading along with me tonight.  Enjoy this week and all the bounty around and stay in touch.

full fabulous weekend with friends and family….

I had a lovely wake-up this morning on Newark-Granville Road.  I was able to roll-over at 7 am when I woke up naturally, no alarm, and go back to sleep for a bit.   I snoozed and then awoke with a happy feeling that it was Thanksgiving Week.  I soaked in the sunshine peaking through, I was a bit sore after a great work-out yesterday and reflected on the goodness the weekend provided.

Friday night- good art opening for The Works AIR (artist in residence) Phillip.  Thanks to those that were able to attend.  I enjoyed great company supporting this young artist filled with passion and energy for his craft.  Joe took the kids to the OSU/MSU hockey game in Columbus- they had a blast! I was able to come home, open a bottle of great french wine and channel Julia Child to prepare a pate for Saturday night's dinner club.  I love alone time in my kitchen, trying something new!  I also set the table to be ready for Sunday's family gathering kicking of the week of special meals.

Saturday was filled to the brim and I didn't let the ice slow me down.  I enjoyed a good work out at Maximum Fitness, a quick check-in at the Thanksgiving Farmers Market downtown Granville.  The vendors are wonderful and I hope the increase in temp brought more shoppers as the morning progressed.  A beautiful funeral mass to say farewell to the wonderful Jack O'Neil.  Jack was a friend to  our community and he will be missed.  The service was lovely and honored Jack well. He has a beautiful family and his legacy lives on very well.  An appropriate reminder for this week of gratitude to value our days, care deeply for family and friends and share our passions.

Dinner club is a great group of friends that make me dust off cookbooks and stretch myself.  Ann our hostess choose a french theme and I took on appetizers.  What fun to research and understand.  I used my mother's warn and now beloved by me Julia Child Cooking Show cookbook.  I made the pate with apple, thyme and bourbon. I whipped up pate choux with swiss cheese and created a platter of les amuse-bouches - to amuse the mouth- of our group.  It was a lovely night with fantastic food and good catch-up, memory making time with these friends.

The weekend came to a close and our week commenced with a Leithauser Family gathering.   It started with the family joining us for church as Clare and Peter's choir sang.  What a beautiful service with many special moments! Leithausers love to enjoy a smoked ham brought from Sherwood by Nadine and Jim- and when we thought about what to serve to day- Joe didn't miss a beat- ham of course.  Jim and Nadine didn't disappoint.  Sally declared it Hamgiving for us today on Newark-Granville Road. I have fond memories of these family holiday gatherings- it is the only time we really eat mid-day and allow the focus of the day to be family.

Life on Newark-Granville Road has had many happy moments within all of this activity.  I'm grateful for those that shared with me the good news- I won a Jay Young print from the Granville Historical Society Raffle!  I received the official call this afternoon and picked up our latest art addition.  The Granville Greggory Hardware Store- not really knowing much about this we did a little research- always good to learn about our beautiful town.  Always nice to hear others compliment your choices and Leithausers loved the service and time together today- I did too.

dreaming big with our girls….

Work and life blends always make for special days- and tonight was one of those great nights!  I'm proud and pleased to be serving with a wonderful group of women to focus on STEM for girls @ The Works.  We recognize the importance of encouraging girls to follow STEM careers and have confidence in their STEM skills.  Awareness and programming is needed to help prepare our amazing young women.

Tonight a program was presented at the Newark High School- Dream Big: A career Night For Girls" and I loved it!  I loved it for my girls, me, the other girls and women there.  Clare was invited through school- thank goodness I opened the email that invited us! I admit to struggling to keep up with all the comings and goings - no doubt I was meant to be there tonight.  As soon as I realized what the invite was we forwarded to others on the committee- thrilled to say five of us were there- two of us with girls.

The evening had three main components: a screening of a wonderful documentary;  a local successful woman sharing important advice and opportunity for girls to reflect and share. We were able to watch The Empowerment Project- https://indieflix.com/empowermentproject/   strong women on a journey documenting to share remarkable women with the "why" this is important. The women were inspiring- Clare and Charlotte thought so too!  Joan Franks, VP with Park National Bank, encouraged girls to stay positive and choose positive friends and co-workers, to take care of themselves and to engage in success circles.  Taking time to reflect with our girls was an important part of the night and very telling for me.  I'm not sure I encourage my girls to dream big enough.  It wasn't an easy task for them to complete.  It was wonderful to hear many YES Clubhouse young women share their aspirations and learn about their role models.  I so valued our female family being there to support and cheer on the young women confident to stand up and share.

This will be a future blog topic as The Works' programming evolves and I take more actions to share, engage, encourage other girls and women to follow their dreams, dream bigger and develop the important skills they possess to have successful STEM careers!  The Works is key to this as the Works utilizes history and art as part of the model to achieve success in STEM. The remarkable mathematician inspired me tonight- she played the cello for 10 years before pursuing her further math degree and becoming a professor of problem solving. She shared how math and music are their own languages that connect the globe- you can go anywhere and play music with other nationalities and math problems can be broken down and worked on together no matter the language spoken.  I love this.  My girls tonight shared that Jerrie Mock is their role model.  We wouldn't know Jerrie Mock or have read her travel book (her travel log while she circumnavigated the world in her Cessna plane making her the first woman to fly around the world!)  Clare wants to be a doctor, not a pilot, but she admires Jerrie's courage and travel!  I loved hearing about dear friend's role model is a woman I admire greatly and know the positive impact she is having all many children in our community.

Life on Newark-Granville road had an inspiring, thought provoking and positive reinforcing night!  Spending the evening with Clare, Charlotte and Sally and a room full of women 11-70?? dreaming big was good for the soul.  I hope you'll ask me more about it and join me as we find more ways to lift these future female leaders and help them reach their dreams.  In the mean time answer the same question we did tonight- what would you do if you knew you wouldn't fail?

grateful for a visit to one of my "to-dos"…..

What a treat to visit The historic Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, VA. I'm grateful the Omni Hotel and Resorts have taken on this beautifully located gem.  Old hotels need tremendous love and care and the Omni is doing just that- caring for a treasure that provides a wonderful escape and retreat in the majestic Allegheny Mountains.

Yes it is a bit off the beaten path- we headed North from 64 through the winding roads- taking in the Covington Paper Mill-great to reconnect here as this was a path I crossed  when I was younger and heading to camp my siblings made a song about the experience.  I love that 35 plus years later it popped right to the lips!  I think the extra drive time off the highway adds to the charm of the Homestead Experience.

I've been hearing about the Homestead for decades.  Aunt Francis and Uncle Lewis went often in my mind, my parents didn't indulge but other friends' families did and the ski offerings were part of friends college experience.  I'm afraid a recent report wasn't very good and I had that in my mind - happy to report that was not the case for our weekend!  We had a lovely time and completely relaxed and enjoyed the Virginia time.

I love historic places, the grandeur, character and good taste resonates with me. This hotel is intimate despite the massive room collections.  My walk to the indoor pool early Saturday morning was more of a hike but a delightful one.  Modern and antique blend well here.  The property requires great attention and cost and Omni is doing their best.  The spa has incredible offerings and was a treat.  I love the water and outdoors and in 30 degree weather was able to partake! The indoor pool needs attention but was a beautiful start to my day.  Our dining experiences were beautiful- hard working attentive staff- beautiful ambiance and great food- all reasonably priced for a special weekend.

Joe and I took in the Jefferson Pools- he wasn't sure how to really spend an hour in a pool.  The mineral waters were indeed restorative and relaxing.  Chilly and not modern (although yes indoor plumbing!) we both were glad we added this to our itinerary.  Joe enjoyed top of the mountain shooting activities that were the highlight of his time in Bath County.  I loved my pedicure and time relaxing at the spa.  We explored a great deal of the property oohing and ahhing at various nooks and crannies with spectacular decor and glimpses to the past.  Everyone there seemed happy and relaxed-fireplace and cozy nooks for tea and cocktails set the tone!

Life on Newark-Granville Road will take me back to The Homestead and I encourage you to consider it for a weekend getaway or stop over on a trip east. It is a wonderful place to gather or find quality time to reflect. Historic inspiration and natural beauty blend to offer southern hospitality in this mountain get-away.

science day for the girls!

What a treat to represent The Works at Granville Elementary School's Science Day.  We set up our table and made the focus:  Science Fair (March 30th- stay tuned to The Works website- www.attheworks.org for registration details- thanks to volunteers Sandy and Steve Doty and Laura Romano!) and Membership.    Members are important for The Works- they are the folks that engage the most with us and we value input and support.  We want to offer memberships that support the community and we think Membersgetmore is a great campaign- launched today!

My title is "science day for the girls" as Sally and Clare helped me staff the table.  Anytime I can give the girls exposure to science activity I do so.  And my observations today- lots of others did the same. I put my head into one session and was thrilled to see 7 K-1 girls and 3 boys.  And they were all equally answering with great enthusiasm.  Loved seeing all the women science leaders (great to see the Dads) but the role model those Moms serve is important!  Even Laura with her darling sons set an example for all the girls in attendance today.

I don't want to take anything away from the boys or men involved- thank you, yay!  But STEM careers are need of more women-http://www.iseek.org/careers/womenstem.html  Last week I met a woman with a daughter that started out on the career path to be a doctor and ended up as a chemical engineer- woo hoo!  As I type this Clare lays on the floor doing math as a family activity…My proud moment Thursday night was joining a Math Lecture at Denison late to find two 9 years olds in the front row- paying attention- Sally and her friend -granted a Math/ Comp Science faculty daughter!  Math Stats/Sports was the topic.  Clare wasn't excited to just listen and asked if this is what college is all about- she finds the dining hall experience much better- however we're confident it will sink in and in the long run she'll thank us and reflect back on the opportunity with fondness.

Thank you to all those involved in today's event in Granville for K-3 grades- over 200 people were there- making this a priority, teaching science in fun ways- it was a great day- just down the street on Newark-Granville Road.

YES!….bought my 2014 Granville historical Society Raffle Tickets!

Took the time to drop into many holiday open house at some favorite shops- Gallery of Dreams, Matilda Charlotte, Roots and Shoots, visited wonderful stores downtown Granville-Whats In It For Me (awesome store- love how they display/merchandize), Petali Tea, Green Velvet, James Store…Peter got some Whit's, I had a bite of the delicious Buckeye custard…and I went to Kussmaul Gallery- yay!  I went there for a card- they carry a line I so value- sentiments always perfect. I found my brother a little something to send his way for his birthday next week and I BOUGHT MY RAFFLE TICKETS!!! Woo Hoo! I've received emails, seen the posters but hadn't acted- not too late!  Although I don't want to raise the odds of my winning the beautiful Jay Young art- I do want to support The Granville Historical Society- so I encourage you to buy yours too!

Although I'm not ready to jump into Christmas I can admit it is time to start thinking about it.  I love walking through these festive tasteful local business to get ideas and inspiration. My brain needs to get serious about the gifts I'll buy and the additional little touches of decoration I'll add this year.  I love trees and decorate with trees- some good things out there.  Kussmaul again has felt squares and circles stacked to bring charming festivity.

Life on Newark-Granville Road enjoys the beauty all around as the seasons change and we prepare for what it to come and honoring the past.

getting ready for The Nutcracker…..

Once again a daughter is learning wonderful lessons about what it takes to produce and perform in a stage production.  Clare danced in COYB's Nutcracker in downtown Newark for two years and Sally has loved scampering in her mice steps.  Sally repeats the role of a darling mouse not only during the battle scene but also during the "visionary" sequence- she'll be one that scares Clara.  (You know they all look alike on stage so it helps to know what actions they have on stage!)  She'll also dance in the snow scenes as a flurry and queue the music- bamb, bamb, bambbada, bamb, bambabbumb,ba,numb, bump, bump…Puppet…or Shortbread- I think I can do this dance by now! She'll be in this group on Saturday evening and Sunday matinee.

It is a beautiful performance put on by YOUTH- no professional dancers, dancers from many different schools from beyond Licking County.  I love peeking in on the rehearsals and seeing the older dancers prepping the younger dancers. I love seeing how the cast and crew of all ages (parents, grandparents, dear friends) bond as a family as they work hard to bring this holiday tradition to life.  Some tire of the music but I don't - I love it.  I cherish my memory of seeing my sister dance in Altoona and am delighted she and her nieces share the experience.

Life on Newark-Granville Road includes many treks up the stairs and round trips downtown and it is all worth it.  I hope you'll consider attending this year- tickets are available at The Midland Box Office- I recommend stopping in the box office- best way to pick your seat. And while you are there pop over to River Road Coffee and Palumbo's for a treat!  You may also call or go-online: here is the link: http://www.midlandtheatre.org  No doubt you'll know many dancers- keep an eye out for the signs in the yards like we have in our life on Newark-Granville Road.

All Saints Day at Church- my reflection on Beth Jenkins

My life in Granville before I made my way to Newark-Granville Road- here is a reflection on a special friend I made in 1986.

Beth Jenkins- Granville Saint of Hospitality I have such fond memories of Beth Jenkins, my wonderful Adopted Grandmother.  Lucky for me Shirley Hale – the housemother of my sorority noticed I attended church in the spring of my freshman year and knew I sang in the concert choir. Therefore this qualified me to be introduced to Beth to be her Adopted Denison Granddaughter.   Our relationship grew over my next three years at Denison as Beth offered me gracious hospitality.  We started with tea at her house and meeting on Sundays to attend church.  Often we’d begin with toast and coffee at the Aladdin.  Our friendships grew to include parties with her very special friends.  I recall listening to her articulate detailed plans and then see the beautiful execution. She took her hospitality very seriously.

Beth set beautiful tables and presented delicious and attractive menus.  Beth was a very giving person and always sent “take home” containers.  Many times while on campus I’d receive a call to let me know a take home container was waiting- soup and cookies were my favorite.  Beth would treat me to special outings- the Cats’ Meow in Zanesville and picnics at Dawes Arboretum.  One picnic included an introduction to the adopted Denison granddaughter that preceded me- Heather. What a treat to make a new friend that afternoon. I made many friends with Beth’s peers- we bonded around the table- Beth’s and others.  I remember fondly tea and time with Bob and Coleen Pitt.  Our friendships continued after my graduation when I would return for visits to Denison. Staying in Beth’s home was delightful- coffee would be delivered in bed- she’d sit and we’d talk- a perfect start the day. Of course I wasn’t the only one to receive these beautiful gifts from Beth.

Here at FPC-she was known for her hospitality within Parish Care.  She would take tea parties to those who were shut in and always leave extra for the next few days.  She made extensive plans when hosting coffee hour in Heritage Hall. Her presentations and her cookies for these events and many others were legendary.  It was a treat to help Beth with her Christmas deliveries- she would make packages of baked goods and fresh fruit and I would drive her from home to home.  Beth was beloved by the Granville community and Granville loved Beth.  The gifts Beth gave lived beyond her-when we moved to Granville the welcome we received from friends I made through Beth were extraordinary.  Certainly I knew some Denison folks but I arrived in town knowing gentile generation.  Shirley Hale and I grew closer through Beth so a natural role was for her to serve as my children’s Granville Grandma. The strong foundation I have at FPC that has been key to my spiritual growth as an adult is thanks to Beth.  When I sit down to tea- with new friendships made here I know Beth smiles.

We all benefit as Beth left our church a beautiful bequest in her estate plans- the elevator.  She always felt for those that would remain in the chapel- our current coat closet because they couldn’t traverse the steps.  Beth the woman who became a saint did not have children; never married- she was devoted to her work in industry as a librarian.  She was a life long learner who shared the lessons of travel, family, friends and work.  Jack Buriss and I met as he helped her preserve her memories. Her faith was simple- she loved Jesus and showed that love in her actions.  She was raised a Quaker and had a loving family.  She spent her days here on earth and beyond making her friends and those in need lives more beautiful. She connected us to one another and to Christ.  Beth is indeed a Saint of FPC and I’m grateful for her life.

Road Trip North

I don't know if I have many Cleveland readers but if I do know I encourage you to get your Christmas Tree from Sugar Pines Farm!  Link below!

http://www.sugarpinesfarm.com

Denisonians from my era- remember Jane Milbourn- now Neubauer- she and her family own and run this beautiful tree farm!  I've seen the website, read the articles and knew it was wonderful- but to see it in person was amazing!  Congratulations and thank you for being an amazing business woman, mom, daughter, wife, friend- yay you!

Can you tell I left Newark-Granville Road and traveled north?  I was in Cleveland for work and was able to connect with friends that are connected to my work- how great is that!  We started the morning with a classmate that is quite the financial whiz and Cleveland aficionado- so good to catch up Rini and thanks for the info for Nancy!  My coworker and I had a lovely time together and I enjoyed introducing her two these amazing women I was lucky to meet at Denison.

It was good to get out and share the good things The Works is doing and be with folks that are connected to my life on Newark-Granville Road.  The bonus was the loaner/rental car while Martha the Sequoia is in the shop- Road Trips are a fun part of life on NGR!

art all the more meaningful when you know the artist…...

A good weekend for art on Newark-Granville Road.   Friday night's art exhibit opening didn't disappoint!  What fun to get to know Michael McGinn and his family.  His wife is smart, charming and lovely.  Their kids loved the Works- they came for the opening and disappeared into the museum- love when this happen.  Michael's friends were also a great group to meet- it says a lot about someone when their friends support them and Michael was very supported.  We're going to enjoy having Michael and his art with The Works through December!!

At the Newark Rotary Auction- Off to the Races- Joe "won" a beautiful piece of art in the live auction. Dave Ghiloni embraced the theme and placed a lovely "Twin Spires" original of a race at Churchill Downs.  This piece is a perfect fit for this Derby loving house!  Dave is a kind and talented man- his studio is a treat to visit and I'm grateful for this gift from Joe.  The dollars donated go to support wonderful education and community lift-up activities and programs.

Life on Newark-Granville Road values art and the talented people that not only create art but support it. Shout out to Hammond-Harkin Gallery in Bexley and the wonderful folks that purchased Michael's art last week.  Below is Clare and Sally's favorite piece from the show- it makes me smile for many reasons.

lighting is everything.....and my favorite part of the show....

This is a subject I could spend a great deal of time on as it fascinates me.  My father is all about lighting- he is an architect and man who likes to share philosophy and lessons.  A big one is don't put a lamp in front of a window- outdoor light coming into a room is an important factor and you don't need to duplicate the effort. The Works art gallery is providing a beautiful lesson in lighting and I hope you'll come experience it! Michael McGinn's painting is beautiful- he knows how to capture light.

Most of his work is of Licking County at dark and the lights he was drawn to in our beautiful community.  The Midland's blue marquee, the front porch light of the historic jail, street lamps and traffic lights- he captures it all beautifully.  The light at this time of day or from Michael's perspective showcases things we may also treasure- a store front- or have never noticed- the ironwork on the top of a bridge.  Learn more about the show from The Advocate: http://www.newarkadvocate.com/story/news/local/2014/10/23/artist-paints-nightscapes-downtown-newark/17803107/

but better yet- come see it tonight- the gallery has been set up beautifully for an evening show.  6-8 pm tonight is the opening. Make it a date night, special outing or stop on your way to another activity.   I look forward to seeing you in the light of the gallery!!

Andy by the way- he didn't only paint at night. He captured beautiful scenes in the daylight. I love to spend time with a show in the gallery- the artwork is wonderful company. I have a few favorites right now- we'll see if one takes the lead or others step in and grow on me.  I love to drive country roads and value the time in my car. Michael has captured a key part of my life on Newark-Granville Road and I'd love to show it to you.

tid-bits and teasers…

Lots I could blog about tonight but I'm tired so I'll just do some general sharing, some of these will get more press time in the future or I'll be happy to discuss- like at book club the night before election.

1. I learned today about the Family Services Levy on the ballot. Licking County cares for children who are not being cared for- we must continue this- there are too many children in need of this protection-over 300 and each year it grows. Learn what I did today: http://www.lickingcountyjfs.com/pdf/2014_CS_Levy_Fact_Sheet.pdf

2. Kusmaul Glass is beautiful- but it is not Works Glass.  I love the gallery and shop and the value it adds to downtown Granville.  However I don't buy my glass there- I buy my glass at The Works.  Custom, one of a kind functional art made in downtown Newark @ The Works.  A friend asked me tonight to clarify this- so I thought I'd share.

3.Oh my is the art by Michael McGinn for the new exhibit in The Works Gallery beautiful!! Scenes of Licking County are really beautiful.  Please come to the opening on Friday night 6-8 pm!  Peppermint Farm, downtown Newark, Pennsylvania Station, The Midland, Green Velvet/Downtown Gville highway scenes, barns-and the best is Michael fell in love with our community while spending time painting it!

4. 100 plus women who care- Licking County- great night out!! Want to know more about this group- let me know- we make a difference and we learn about others who make lots of difference.  So glad to spend time with wonderful women tonight- and a potential new member!

5. Old Horeshoe in Johnstown- did a great job caring for 100+WWC tonight- hard working staff and good food in GORGEOUS location. Support this pub please- great beers on tab and snacks!!

That is going to do it for tonight….to be continued on Newark-Granville Road.

down to the races…..

What a treat to share Keeneland with the kids!  No school on Friday (in October) gave us the perfect opportunity to head south and enjoy a day that connects to our annual Derby Party.  The kids have watched the races on TV but nothing beats the real thing.  I fell in love with Keeneland when I lived in Maysville, KY and a good friend shared this great day out with me.  Over the years it has been a delight to share it with others- Joe when we were dating, Marcia Downs and Works volunteers when our theme was "Off to the Races" and this weekend the kids.

Life on Newark-Granville Road loves an adventure. When you load up the kids and head out- it is always an adventure.  This trip was no different.  We were lucky to friends like the Mattimoes that also enjoy Keeneland trips.  Fun to share our day out and have overlap. Loved having Charlotte with us on the way down and Clare was happy to extend her day in Lexington and having quality time with her other family on the way home.  We arrived early enough to enjoy a southern breakfast at the Track Kitchen.  The website states this is a great secret and I'd agree. Follow signs on the grounds and park for an inexpensive cafeteria style meal.  You see the people that make Keeneland work and you feel like your with the locals. We then walked through the stables to the Grandstands/ClubHouse.  A favorite element of Keeneland is how friendly everyone is- we were so welcomed and encouraged.  The interaction with staff was exceptional and truly like nothing I've experienced.  Peter is our engager- he made friends with many staff - always fun to witness. (He also does this as catcher with umpires- makes baseball watching all the more fun.)

The kids really loved our time together in Lexington. It was a quick trip- we only watched four races. We're all looking forward to a return trip that will allow us to stay longer.  Valuable lessons were learned- odds explained and discussed. Clare and Charlotte were the big winners on race number 3- the rest of us not so much.  I really don't like to bet but will spend a little bit to engage with the race and try my hand at the lessons Joe shares.  We found our take aways that make us smile- my Keeneland pen will remind me of our family outing south of Newark-Granville Road.

going down memory lane….

We started the Denison Class of 1990 Facebook Group this week and today is "TBT" throw back Thursday. So I went to the attic and found the scrapbook I made freshman year.  Woosh- back came the memories.  Some of them were there but vague- new ones came forth fast. Seeing the window open and the beautiful view from our East Hall room.  I see a glimpse of my first year living away from home, with all sorts of amazing friends that were acquaintance's at that time- decisions, close living quarters, and similar lives would unite us.  I was very lucky- but Denison brings/brought great poeple together back then and now.  More on this later - wonderful blog inspiration on Newark-Granville Road this morning. Pictures coming soon too!

love the people in this village!

I heard the forecast for high wind and was worried about the tree in the front yard.  Note to self- schedule the trimming!! (Have I reported that the Generator required for the sewer system install for our house/lot and the back entrance tiling/ powder room spruce up are complete!!  Problem is the back hallway leads to need for other projects- more painting, etc….)  Why do I forget the biggest issue we have with wind and our old house- doors!  Doors blow wide open.  I can't tell you how many messages I've received from people over the years about finding our door wide open.  I so appreciate people who stop and close them for us.  Some have been very concerned- as I use to be when I'd come downstairs in the morning to find the door wide open- that maybe an intruder was in the house- however I think most people by now get it.  Love our town and the people that care and take action.

Today that is what people did yet again but not for the house- for the dog.  Griffey took full advantage of an open door to go on a jaunt.  Who knows how long he was out and where he went.  If he upset your dog or yard I am sorry.  I hope he didn't scare too many people driving on Newark-Granville Road.  Thank you for always driving defensively and with much awareness on our street- runners of all ages, children of all ages and lots of pets (and deer) populate the paths and yards.  A shout out to the folks that saw Griffey and got him home.  Neighbors and friends alerted me directly and through friends about the issue. Of course I was in a meeting without my phone.  Love that coworkers were contacted too to make sure I was in the know.  Scott from McNally's stopped and ensured Griffey would stay home- he secured the door that didn't want to stay closed.  Griffey knows Scott and probably thought he was there to pick him up for a sleep over! What lovely service is that- thank you for helping my neighbor in a tricky situation and keeping Griffey safe.

Life on Newark-Granville Road is always full of exciting times and we so value how it is shared and supported in this wonderful community.

weekend in review……shout out to Denison!

Thought I'd let you know about the things I said would fill life on Newark-Granville Road this weekend…..

Cross Country- Licking County League Finals- all the cross country teams in Licking County came together for this meet.  Watkins hosted which is a tough but well regarded course.  The trail goes through the woods and ends in the stadium so to me it is an ideal place for finals like this.  Clare took me into the woods to see Peter run- what a treat!  This is where the kids go to cheer on their teammates- neat to see that in action.  One of the many things we love about Cross Country is the camaraderie across grades and gender.  It was also great to get to so many places to see Peter go by- could not do this without Clare- thanks Clare. I also enjoyed seeing the kids battle for their spot just before the finish.  Too bad Clare didn't hear me yelling- watch out for the "green one"….green was a Newark Catholic runner. Clare told me she had no idea the girl in green was so close and she did hear one encouraging word I yelled on the course.  By the way she stayed strong and in front of the close opponent as she crossed the finish line.  Both did OK with their runs- I'm proud of their participation.  I'm very proud of all the runners and grateful for the coaches and families that make up the Cross Country family.  6 years in a row these teams- all 6 have won the league title.  Interested in knowing more- talk to us- we love to help connect kids and family to this program.

Bluegrass in Downtown Newark!  Woo hoo- we love bluegrass and love to support downtown.  Denisonians played a big role in this- alumnus Tom Atha was the coordinator and Andy Carlson, Casey Cook and their incredible students were everywhere yesterday.  What a treat to have this music offered all day yesterday.  Joe took Sally to Nutcracker rehearsal then walked over to spend time. He heard some great music- during the break he went to the Draft House. He enjoyed a $2 Molson Canadian.  After Sally's rehearsal she and Clare went to The Works while Joe and I took in more music and more Draft House time.  We took the girls home and regrouped.  We returned to..The Draft House and Sparta for late night bluegrass.  It has been a long time since I've been a bar that crowded with so much happy energy.  It was a delight to be part of the fun. Shout out to the awesome food trucks- the late night pizza was east cost yumminess.  The Works glass pumpkin pop-up was a great touch too. That block of Main Street was really ideal for such a festival and a big thank you to all the made it possible.

Joe and I left around 9- just too crowded for us- we wanted to give up our good spot at the bar.  We were not ready to go home so we decided to take in the last quarter of the Denison night football game.  We picked up the kids and headed to campus.  Another delightful way to enjoy Denisonians and a fun atmosphere.  Denison has been inviting local high school bands to play during the game.  What a treat to hear Lakewood last night.  They did a great job.  Denison was doing well to come back against Wittenburg- it didn't happen but they gave it a good try.

I will say I slept very well last night- lots of fresh air- cool crisp and filled with fun.  Today was church time, family breakfast at the favorite coffee house. We met a Denison football Dad while in line. We took in Peter's baseball game with Joe's parents.  Fun to see the team rally and win their game.  Lots of good plays and runs scored to keep it interesting.  Peter loves to be on the ball field and I love to watch him- even it was a bit chilly.  Picture posted on the left is from today's baseball game.

We ended the day with family dinner-big kids ate with church group but joined us for a roll and discussion.  We're in prep mode for a day trip to Keeneland this week!! We talked about analytics and odds - math time!!A lovely weekend in Denison's hometown- how lucky are we to raise our family here and live on Newark-Granville Road.

**adding Friday night Newark-Granville Symphony Concert!  WOW!  The symphony sounded amazing on their own and supporting a fantastic performer-Liz Callaway.  What energy, what a voice and what fun selections.  I loved getting to sing along with DOWNTOWN- I loved that song when we put a dance routine to it at Camp when I was Sally's age!  Seeing Peter Larson in action was something else- he composed one of the songs she sang - an Off Broadway production.  Joe did Granville Football fun with Peter in the band so Shirley Hale - our Granville Grandma- my Pi Phi House mother- went with me- so glad it was the concert not to miss.  Common Thread added an amazing element too- love their music and with the orchestra included- wowza! Thanks to Sue Larson and the amazing team that makes that happen- again Denison plays a key roll with their support and performing arts commitment and outlets!!

places to go, things to do, run, walk, dance, sing along…..

So it is a full weekend.  A weekend where we cry uncle and recognize we can't do it all.  We won't be at the Blue and White Oktoberfest or FPC Rock n Roll Party at the UCC church- on Broadway- education building!! GO TO THIS IF YOU CAN- cheap drinks, great music, fabulous cause-$10 at the door. We  are going to the downtown Newark Bluegrass festival- love to support downtown and adore bluegrass.  There is a pop-up Works glass pumpkin patch there in the afternoon!!!  And what I really wish we could do and the kids to too- Maple Leaf 5K- Race Day Registration 8 am checks and cash $25- GIS 2025 Burg St. Granville- go if you can! This is a great race for kids- all 3 of ours have done it!! This is where we learned how gritty Clare is- Joe ran over her with the running stroller- she got up and kept running- Peter was in the stroller.  We'll be cheering on kids sports teams- Sally soccer and Clare and Peter the Licking County League Cross Country meet!  Tonight I take in the Newark-Granville Symphony performance at The Midland while Joe and kids head to Granville football game- Peter gets band time!

THANK YOU to all the volunteers and staff that make these events happen- what a wonderful community we have to so many options.  Life on Newark-Granville Road will be tapping our toes and getting our exercise this weekend.

thank you for the invitation….

...what a delight it was to be invited to a really fun gathering tonight that did good!  I love an auction and I really love when people get creative and innovative, and it is all the better when we gather at a place that is all about innovation and entrepreneurship!  Some amazing people put together an outing at Homestead Beer- beer, dinner and a tour.  This was auctioned off at an annual event put on at Moundbuilders Country Club to support SAAS and Breast Cancer Support and Early Dection.  Kay Barton is pretty special and rallys an incredible group to raise funds, awareness and a grand time.  The wonderful couple that bought/won the night out at Homestead included Joe and me.  We could not be more grateful.

So I learned some things tonight about beer.  I tasted some delicious ones- I am a lager girl and so enjoyed the Homestead Octoberfest!  My palate has expanded since marrying my use-to-home-brew guy.  So now I will enjoy a hoppy IPA and found the ten-penny quite delicious tonight.  I appreciated the tour to see what the Homestead process is, where they get their supplies, how well this young start-up business is doing and what the expansion plans are at the Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority!  I learned about oxidation in beer- warm beer being stored will oxidize.  Oxidizing affects flavor- won't harm you.  I also have high regard for these beer brewers. They are quite innovative in their recipes.  These small batch houses are quite the innovators and entrepreneurs. Life on Newark-Granville Road is impressed with the work being done at Homestead.

Life on Newark-Granville Road so values being included with a special group of people honoring, celebrating and supporting an important mission and good people!  It was the perfect month to enjoy an outing like this-October is Breast Cancer Awareness- make your appointment for a mammogram, see your doctor and encourage friends and family.  Cheers to all you survivors and those doing all you can to make a difference.

art on the big screen!

I've been craving a night at the movies. Rainy days have come and gone and it hasn't worked to escape to the cinema.  When the field hockey game was cancelled due to rain and nothing prevented it- I took my chance.  The kids finished up homework, prepped for tomorrow and then I shared the fun- off to the movies! " What are we seeing?"they chimed in unison.  I explained we were seeing " The Boxtrolls" because I've been anxiously awaiting this release.  I want to see this art on the big screen!

At work @ The Works- we've had lovely company in the gallery. For three months illustrators' art have been in the exhibit- "Storytellers-The Art the Story Book".  I was so happy to see friends seize their free time and take in the show this afternoon!  It ends on Saturday so take one last visit or see it before it leaves!  Graham Annable the artist from Boxtrolls provided a video showcasing Boxtrolls and the art for the big screen in this exhibit- fascinating.  I can't wait to visit his art (for sale!!) tomorrow morning. And I have to say it is an entertaining story with a great message.  The three Leithauser kids give it a thumbs up.  It was wonderful to be alone in the theater with my babies- all of us entranced with this stop animation film.

I have to share the other fun connections to the exhibit!! Boxtrolls is a partner with our Saturday fun in the gallery- Global Cardboard Challenge: http://imagination.is/our-projects/cardboard-challenge/   10-2 at The Works- join the imagination playground! http://www.attheworks.org/visit/calendar-event.aspx?id=1565d3c4-198c-450e-9459-6ceab2677dbd  for details!  Carlo LoRaso did a great job curating this exhibit.  We all enjoyed artist John Skewes in town the week of HATSOFF! It was a treat to see his time here documented on his blog: http://larrygetslost.wordpress.com  I've completely fallen in love with his character Larry- the darling dog exploring wonderful cities and places. I love the experience John Skewes gives children of all ages!

Life on Newark-Granville road is filled with art- it delights, teaches, transports, entertains and comforts us. How fortunate I am to experience art often beyond what is on a wall- I learn the how, why and have it accompany my beautiful life.

date night!

I remember fondly Saturday nights growing up and my parents going out, often dressing up in formal wear. I can remember the scent of perfume, the sound of chiffon or taffeta swooshing and recall the delight in the preparations.  Maybe this is why I enjoy dressing dinner club outings in our life on Newark-Granville Road.  This picture was snapped at Saturday's Alfretta Dinner Club.  Saturday night took a theme of 1951- reflecting on the group's rich history.  (This is why Joe is in a white dinner jacket in October) We had a lovely night with friends and cuisine.  The new Linden Alley (3rd floor of Brews) hosted us well providing an intimate venue and delicious dinner- in particular the antipasto and  mushroom ravioli! If you are interested in learning more about nights out like these I hope you'll contact me as I love to share fun things in our community and this is a delightful way to secure a special evening with my husband and friends.

Newark-Granville Road in the news and in art!

If a picture tells a thousand words- what does a painting say?  I'm delighted with what artist Bridgette Turner captured about life on Newark-Granville Road in oil on linen!

http://www.newarkadvocate.com/story/news/local/granville/2014/10/03/open-air-artists-interpret-granville/16639923/

Did you see all the artists painting outside around town this week?  Did you see "our artist" in our yard on Newark-Granville Road? The Plein Air Society was here for two days and wrapped up the Granville time with a show and reception in the yard at Robbins Hunter Museum.  You may have noticed that too yesterday.  Silly me I was thinking the show would be inside the museum- a group of artists that paint outdoors - of course the gathering was on the lawn.   It was a beautiful event and I hope you'll read this article!!

So how did we get to have an artist set up in our yard and interpret our home? A friend and neighbor connected us with an artist collecting home owners willing to provide access to the plein air artists.  I jumped at the opportunity and recommended other locations as well.  I love the arts and supporting artist anyway I can.   That was the first step- 2nd step was random matching of artists to locations. It is a blind draw and we got lucky. Lucky to be selected and lucky to connect with this wonderful artist.  Not surprising there is more to the story with this artist.  Her studio is down the street from a good friend and colleague in Clintonville!  I love that we were able to figure this out yesterday.  I snapped a picture of the artist car so I would remember her name.  I look forward to visiting the studio and I hope you will too- http://bridgetteturnerfineart.com/works

A few others things to share:
- painting was started on Clare's birthday making it just a bit more special.
-if I were to title this I would call it- "View from the Bus Stop"
-I love that we indeed had our pumpkins on the porch and our bright happy window box geraniums add to the cheer.

Plein air art travels off of Newark-Granville Road…you can enjoy it Sunday in Alexandria- 8am-3pm!! See details below.

all her favorite things…...

Clare makes birthday fun easy!!  Since it was the first Wednesday of the month we gave her the option of dinner at home, a trip to a favorite restaurant or spaghetti night at the Maennerchor- Newark's German Club.  A girl who loves tradition she opted for Spaghetti Night! And may I say a homemade delicious meal- thanks Bob, Bill and team!!  Of course she was pleased to have Cane's Chicken last night since we were in Gahanna for a field hockey game!  The thing to do is bring extra Canes home and take it to school for lunch.  So she enjoyed a yummy birthday lunch.  She requested that we return home for birthday cake.  This year the request was what Peter celebrated 12 with- Graeter's Raspberry Chocolate Chip cake made by Mom.  We went to Graeters after Canes last night- I presented the idea of picking up a Graeters made ice cream cake or pie with her favorite flavor?  She opted for my rendition- Oreo cookie crust with the ice cream- all formed in a spring form pan.  I was flattered and happy to make the cake.

Sally made the day fun and took me up on the offer to skip soccer practice so we could have family dinner.  We included Charlotte- Clare's best friend - so it really felt like a special family outing.  When we picked up Clare- Charlotte's Mom had homemade chocolate cookies as a treat for Clare. I love that Clare has a 2nd mom caring for her and letting her know how special she is.

It really was the best of both worlds tonight- having the whole family enjoying a Newark favorite and then time around our dining room table on Newark-Granville Road.  I sat back and watched my first born beam with joy as she opened cards and gifts.  She glowed in joy that elephants and thoughtful treats delivered!  Thank you all for helping Clare feel the love we all hold for her.

quality time with quality people...

Full weekend- even I can admit that I overbooked myself this weekend- but I wouldn't change a thing!  Here is the recap for the record books…..

Friday- Denison Big Red Weekend Networking Event.  I was honored to be asked to sit in to share advice and encouragement to students thinking of career options beyond their 4 years at an awesome liberal arts college on the hill!  I enjoyed the other alums/staff in the room and the eager talented students that joined the session on careers in the arts.  Joe and I readied the house for guests on Saturday.  The powder room on the 1st floor is coming together.  Kids did a great job tidying up while I was at Denison and that was most appreciated.

Saturday- Golf Golf Baby! We were pleased to be asked to join a golf outing raising money for a youth sports organization.  We love our golf partners who invited us be on their team and thoroughly enjoyed the time on the course together!! I really think golf could be a happy place for me- bevies, sunshine, fresh air and friends - little exercise mixed in doesn't hurt either!  We were in Mt. Vernon at Chapel Hill- lovely course by the way!

Saturday Night- Dinner Club at our house!!  We've been doing this for 14 years!!  Gathering at one another's homes- host picks the theme, provides bevies and main course.  I went with simple fall and did a pork roast- Ina Garten recipe- with thyme and Dijon mustard.  My club companions didn't disappoint- cheese fondue that was amazing, a delicious and beautiful salad and rustic apple crostata that was scrumptious and presented very well.  Griffey had a nose for it immediately and was a happy puppy when he found a scrap of parchment to lick clean!  It was wonderful to entertain these wonderful devoted friends.  The evening was accompanied by football- a key to fall fun!

Sunday- Clare and I departed early for 25th Reunion Work that included an incredible outing to the Cincinnati Reds game!  I'm so pleased I opted to bring her along as car time with my oldest daughter turning 14 this week was priceless.  We were ahead of schedule and snuck in a quick shopping jaunt at Old Navy. A lovely experience as Clare is pretty classic and easy to shop for and with- not sure how long it will last but I cherish it.  Then I introduced my grown up daughter to college roommie Lori and her family. Lori hadn't seen Clare since she was a toddler.  I loved seeing her kids again and  her wonderful husband I missed the last trip to Cinci.  We did our catch-ups and then headed into town for the Reds game that included reunion planning work!!  Our classmate treated us like queens in the Queen City and to top it off Clare met Pete Rose.  I learned to like the Reds at Denison and deepened the relationship when I started dating Joe.  My closet in our Mulford Road home had a poster of the Big Red Machine- so I too was pleased with the chance to shake hands with Mr. Rose.  It was fun to be with Clare in this setting. She appreciates the game and keeps score as well as Joe.  She valued the chance to be included and was a delightful company for all of us.  Good thoughts and ideas were put forth for the 25th and the Reds won- hip hip hooray!

I'm home now and ready to gather with some Granville gals for Sunday TV- the perfect way to wrap up this wonderful weekend on and off of Newark-Granville Road that was filled with quality time with family and friends old and new.

Chivarly is alive and well in Granville and I'm grateful.

"We get the chance to see the beautiful night sky" said the gentleman waiting with me for the jumper cables to arrive at Raccoon Valley Park. Two very kind, very patient men didn't leave me stranded after I left my keys in the ignition, draining the battery.  Gentleman number one immediately came to my rescue asking everyone at soccer practice pick up if they had jumper cables.  So many people took the time to look and I thank you all.   Gentleman number two remained to assist which was very appreciated as well.   It took a full hour for Joe to step in, divert his plans, go pick up the kids on time at the CC pasta party, drop off another child, return home to get the cables and come to the rescue at RVP. Three kids and three adults found ways to pass the time.  It was a beautiful sky to watch unfold, the fresh air was lovely and I reflect on the wonderful spirit all maintained- kids played soccer in the dark, read by the headlight and shared snacks fortunately procured before practice!!  Joe arrived and quickly the car started with help by the wonderful men showcasing chivalry that indeed makes life on Newark-Granville Road so wonderful.

I must add that my life on Newark-Granville Road often sees this chivalry by gentleman number one.  There have been many times he has been traveling on Newark-Granville Road and seen our family in need and he stops to help.  I hated to admit this evening that I needed help. I didn't want to inconvenience and delay anyone from getting home.  But I know to ask for help- it is the only way my life on Newark-Granville Road works and I knew this gentleman would help as best he could. What I also witnesses was he asked for help- he was the one asking the other parents in the lot tonight for the jumper cables.

What I also so value in this gentleman's support is the role model he serves for not only his own children, but the others around us tonight and my own.  On drive home with my three kids from RVP our discussion included praise for the helpers and why we serve one another, support one another.  Often need happens when we don't have the time, or have plans or are ready to be home or somewhere else.  The gentleman helping tonight- Joe included- easily could of left me on my own, given me a ride and left it to tomorrow- but they did not.  They all performed a gallant deed to assist me so I am able to sit comfortably on Newark-Granville Road and tuck my children to bed.  I'm indeed very grateful for such care in our community.

preparing to welcome fall!

**** I was typing this blog thinking today was the Autumn Equinox- I am wrong- tomorrow is the last day of summer/ first day of fall:  http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/september-equinox.html  Time to edit…..***

I love the Granville Farmer's Market for many reasons.  We all have our favorite spots - for us a weekend treat is the Farmer's Market BLT and regular blog readers know this. This weekend  Organic Fix- a green smoothie- hit the spot, Clare was delighted with woopie pies for her dessert and red raspberries far different than the store bought cross country morning fuel.  I found a new fall favorite from the market- pumpkin branches! They also are referred to as pumpkin on a stick.  It was just what I needed to pull out the fall decorations for our house on Newark-Granville Road!

http://parkseed.com/pumpkin-on-a-stick-eggplant-seeds/p/51648-PK-P1/   More details on these cool pumpkin variation- read to find out that it is not really a pumpkin at all, not even a gourd.

Since Fall arrives soon September 22- our dinner time discussion debated- is it the last day of summer or the first day of fall?  Since I love summer I'll say the last day of summer.  But I'm ready for fall- more so than ever!!  So why am I in an autumn mood these days?  Devine Farms opened today and we look forward to a visit there. I'll be on the farm this week- facilitating Soy Science-a nice change of pace for me and a way to return the favor of support to the education team!! HATSOFF was early this year so I'm in a good place to welcome fall.

I'm hosting our Columbus friends- our dinner club next week and have made the theme- you guessed it- autumn favorites.  I'll roast pork with vegetables and look forward to my friends that cook well interpretations.  We're thinking of Clare's birthday- next week- October is a good Fall month to me.  Life on Newark-Granville Road is ready for the next season and the pleasures it bring!  I'll post The Works' Glass Pumpkin Patch date soon- but know the Gear/Gift shop has some very pretty and unique ones waiting for you.

yes- a hair cut can make all the difference.

I heard a wise woman recently say- a woman's best friends are her hairdresser and OB/GYN. YES my life on Newark-Granville Road confirms this!! I have to say the person I really wanted to see after HATSOFF! fun was my hairdresser!!

There are lots of ways to relax and rewind- sitting in Beth's chair today was a good one!  I didn't mean to grow my hair out- it just happened. I missed an appointment in August due to a HATSOFF! meeting and never rescheduled.   I decided it was fine as I'd get my hair put up for the 1882 theme- seen the pictures- that didn't happen. So the first thing I did on Monday morning was text Beth and say please get me in.  She didn't disappoint.

I also had made the decision weeks ago that as soon as HATSOFF was over I'd be cutting my hair- no need for pony tail and the length just takes too long in the morning.  So today I walked in and said do what you want.  I looked at some photos for inspiration and she did her magic.

I have fond memories of doing this- growing to cut shorter.  I did it after my junior year at Denison. I did it while I worked at Denison after Peter was born.  That feeling of hair falling out post pregnancy drove me to it.  I did it not long after going back to work at The Works as the long haired head shot really isn't me.

Life on Newark-Granville Road will have faster mornings now, or allow me to stay in bed or at the gym a bit longer- hooray!  Keep a look out for the shorter haired Susan on Newark-Granville Road.

happy moments continue on Newark-Granville Road!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/theworksmuseum/sets/72157647223288349/

And many other moments captured by the Works Marketing Director- Suzanne- she has quite the eye!! I am enjoying the moments of interacting with these photos- a text was sent to me that delighted me, a friend showed me a darling picture of a wonderful couple, Dan Wilson told me his favorite was the volunteer meeting- Suzanne was everywhere!  What were your favorites and thoughts- please share!! I'm sitting in my cozy desk spot at home reliving the fun people and elegant decor thanks to flikr and Suzanne's effort to load these for us!!

Tonight is family dinner night- again!!! I cooked the tried and true favorite in our lives on Newark-Granville Road….regular readers know- salmon cakes, mac n cheese, stewed tomatoes and fresh broccoli!  It always make me smile that this is something all 3 kids eat and request!  I've never ordered these out, or had them made by anyone else- these are pure Jeanne Stoner kitchen basic.

Another happy family moment for me today on Newark-Granville Road was getting Sally off the bus, picking up the kids from cross country! We even included Griffey to provide quality time since he went to a sleep over this past weekend!!

It is a lovely day on Newark-Granville Road- cool crisp air, walking destinations (we went to see the new bridge progress) dinner aroma from the oven and a good tired from successful happy work.

the moments that matter….HATSOFF!

Amazing gifts of very special moments is what HATSOFF! has given my life on Newark-Granville Road this year….there is no way I'm going to capture them all in this blog entry today.  I'm too tired, happy, relieved, excited, mellow all mixed up at one time.  Of course I'm thrilled with the results sitting here on a Sunday morning with the museum back in order and the tentative count showing an exceeded goal. This means we continue to support this incredible community in creative, hands-on, fun ways that celebrate our rich history to prepare the future!!

Truly a smile comes to my face when I recall the special occurances I shared and witnessed including…..the aha moment watching the tent's corrugated chandeliers be hoisted to the ceiling- amazing volunteer engineering and teamwork represented there!!  The vision becoming reality room by room in the museum- I'm in awe of Emily Wilson- she see's it and makes it happen- hands on, easy going, energetic and fun!  The bar evolving from pieces of wood to a magestic peirod setting decor- science, art and history rolled into one!! The designer tables delighting all that laid eyes in the tent one by one on Saturday morning!! Dan Wilson, Michael Kennedy and lots and lots of helpers produced new and gorgeous results for 2014 making for a magical honor to the past.

It can't happen without donations- lots and lots- big and small!! Matt Miller took sponsorship to a whole new level and supported by team leaders Courtney and Erin that broke all records!  We brainstormed ideas and by day's end the best auction items were committed- wow!  Courtney brought in donors far and wide and delighted all our shoppers!!  I wasn't there but a special moment for me was hearing a fellow committee member sing Erin's praises as she recruited the help of fellow golfers and pro to help make the wall of wine the best it could be!!  Danielle and I have many many HATSOFF! moments and she is a crital foundation to this important and special event!

Pat and Linda Jeffries accepted their role of Emerita Chairs and I'm so grateful- two years ago they declared 2012 would be the biggest and best and showed us how.  Emily and Dan watched and applied the lessons and benefited from the encouragement and leadership- 2014 is now the biggest and best.  I cannot more grateful to Dan and Emily for accepting the role and executing their vision so beautifully.  I'm thinking back on the moments in meetings, conversations at the bar, in the back yard, kitchen, in the drive way at the Wilson's home and smiling.  It has been so much fun on top of it all.

There are soooo many other people to thank- the program tried to do that- I'll share the link there soon. Moments for gratitude include the positive happy off duty officer guarding the tent Friday night and entertaining the incredible volunteers making napkin roses, the friends that engaged and assisted in large and small ways- providing music, selling chance items with such care and commitment.  My time with the team producing the videos, the donors being interviewed, the ah-ha moment with the intern and her industrialist card of Rinehart Scheidler!!  I'll stop for now….please share some of the moments with the Newark Advocate gallery, facebook, etc…..I'm sitting here on Newark-Granville Road savoring each moment!!  http://www.newarkadvocate.com/picture-gallery/news/local/2014/09/13/hatsoff/15602435/
