Preperation for what is to come…...

and that means traditions and family fun for NYE this year and New Year's food preparation.  For tonight we have our taco/burrito family dinner with the Westerville Leithausers.  Lucky us- Leithauser Christmas was lovely this year and we'll gather again to enjoy oneanother's company- making memories.  We come and go from our family on that we're fortunate to count as friends too. We've traveled, shared close birthdays, pregnancies and summer fun- memories are rich and deep with the Leithausers.  Tomorrow we're ready with our black-eyed pea dip, brats and sauerkraut will be the pork and sauerkraut and the pickled herring (Joe's favorite) has been procured.  Note last year I got the sandwich cut and it was way wrong!  We eat these things for luck.  It has worked for years and years because indeed I'm lucky…..here is a fun quote about luck that ties to my blog's purpose and the title today….

back in town….life off of Newark-Granville Road

It is soooo good to go away! Vacations and trips can be difficult to carve out but it is so important! It is important to take a break from blog posts, driving kids to and from, our work places, even keeping the house clean and meals on the table.  As long as I've been a mom and had full life on Newark-Granville Road (and Mulford) I've escaped to my parents house in Maryland.  It had been way too long since we made a Maryland visit.  On the drive on the 26th we figured it was our Africa/Easter/Spring break trip in March.

While in Maryland we enjoyed our Stoner Christmas celebration- so great to be with Sarah, Greg and Louisa- Bohdie their dog is a beloved member of the family too. She is always with them- even our vacation trips or with us when they visit here.  We missed Matt and his family, however having had Easter with them and Thanksgiving here we were ok.  Mom and Dad's house gets a bit cramped so Joe and I enjoy hotel time- tv in bed, clothes in our own space and opportunity to get a drink at a favorite watering hole- The Colonial.

We enjoyed an activity I enjoyed growing up- hiking! To prepare for Joe, Clare and Peter's overnight hike on the Appalachian Trail in March we scouted out where they'll pitch their tent and enjoy dinner on the trail.   My Dad engaged with maps, deep knowledge of the area and escorted us to make sure we found our way.  Time together is so valuable. My Dad's MSD (being treated) Sarah's cancer- 5 years cancer free and the watching friends mourn their parents loss makes time off the road all the more important.  We're lucky our kids know their grandparents- both sets so well- we don't take our life on Newark-Granville for granted and we count our blessing and savor the time.

Christmas Greetings! Christmas Card Blog Entry!

I enjoy sharing the behind the scenes about cards we send.  This year we were able to get Christmas Cards finished and mailed (last year did Valentines cards)….although most cards will arrive on the 3rd, 5th even 6th day of Christmas. Some may say we then should of send "New Years Cards"….however following family tradition we celebrate until Epiphany- January 6th. The tree won't come down until then…and it may be later this year as we put the tree up late- we'll see- not doubt a future blog topic!  My grandmother's birthday (Clara Schnebly Price- my mom's mom) was January 6th.  Lucky us- Sarah Landis Leithauser (our Sally) was born January 6th as well!

Cards this year were not processed via excel or list- and I know we're missing people- hopefully you've found your way here and we can say- MERRY CHRISTMAS!  HAPPY NEW YEAR…may you find love, happiness, hope, joy and adventure in 2014!  Also the back of our card says JOIN us for our annual Derby Party on May 3rd!  We won't do invitations for Derby but you're invited!!

I need to give a shout out to Leader Printing in Granville/ Newark- on 16 at Cherry Valley intersection- they're wonderful to work with.  I send them my photos, ideas, text and they produced our cards- I'm soooo grateful.  I had ideas to do something about following in footsteps with all 3 kids playing basketball- Joe played and now coaches….Clare went to and is going to the camp where I went, Peter is playing Joe's trumpet, choir memories for the kids take me back to my choir days…..so much happiness and joy- maybe next year!   Africa was too good not to share photos- Sally's spirit was the highlight of our trip to Senegal- visiting the orphanage, delivering toys collected on Christmas eve last year and Sally's 8th birthday….of course this all happened thanks to the Michael's our dear friends- they were amazing hosts.

I don't include a Christmas Letter anymore- I let the blog do that work!  As you know from reading past entries  Joe and I love our jobs, we have wonderful help to shuttle kids and keep the house in order and kids are doing great in school and activities.  The house is getting a tap into the sewer for Xmas- ho ho ho….Our community, church, friends, family (all here for Tgiving) lift us up so it is a very very Merry Christmas for us.  We know it isn't the case for everyone and we hope the Spirit will help make it merrier if this is the case.   Oh yes Griffey- the 1 1/2 year old dog is growing up but loving that tree and it's ornaments of perceived buffet play toys!!

Waiting until the last minute…...

Last year it was "Gloria" Gloria…..calling the wrong Walmart….this year well I can't go into details but the desired item has been obtained… Santa has assured me it is in the sled and will be delivered- woo hoo!

Tonight Joe and I took advantage of an hour and half to wrap up some key items- Nostrums was an absolute delight! The service was amazing! Selection and price ranges all pleased and delighted me..I even found 15 minutes and a sales associate at my side to try on dresses and secure the red sweater I've been keeping my eye out for quite some time.

Joe and I enjoyed dinner at The Pearl. I've heard about it since they opened and had yet to find time to enjoy.  It didn't disappoint- yummy fresh oysters on the half shell, delicious fish dinner all in the company of dear friends we just don't see enough.  Joe and Matt put it all together and they get gold stars for the effort.

The day started early with church and a great sermon, kids choir over brunch- I was able to enjoy a bloody mary in a place where I relax immediately upon entry.  Nice to be with good friends and share a meal.  MCC is very special to me and a lovely holiday week kick-off! I'm in a good place in my life on Newark-Granville Road. Not that there isn't tons still to do….but the last minute success is working it's magic and giving me energy.  We're getting ready- Christmas and the joy, hope and love it brings will be here soon!

standing in one place…..

Today gave me time to focus…focus on this wonderful community, my wonderful family, my wonderful job.  Today we rang the Salvation Army Bell via Newark Rotary.  What a great start to the day.  The kids were far from perfect, but they did it.  Today I spend a good chunk of time at my desk addressing deadlines and getting ready for a break and saying thanks. Tonight I stayed home and worked on Xmas cards and enjoyed just being with Joe and the girls.

There is so much going on in this world, with our family and friends. It felt so good to stand this morning and ring the bell- in an easy way ask for support of those in need, ask for support of an organization that cares and shares warmth and love.  I drove the kids to the Salvation Army after we did our shift- we appreciate our vantage point a bit better today.  I wore the Rotary vest and Sally asked about "service above self" and we talked about how good it feels to serve, give, care.  It was good to be in Newark at the Kroger- observe the comings and goings. Feel the giving, the warmth, the smiles and anticipation of the seasons. Good to talk with a fellow Rotarian and my kids for an hour- a whole hour.

My job is full of amazing events and activities.  It is hard to stop and report on what has been happening. Reflect to soak in the good work, the lessons to improve and throw things away and delete and clean up too.  Good to say thanks and plan for what surely will be another year of growth, service, learning and fun for our community with The Works.

This holiday season has us sending Christmas Cards again- I love mail and love reaching out to friends far and near.  I love to open cards and connect with friends near and far. I love how the kids stand with me at the kitchen counter and open and review, inquire and remark. I'm grateful for 2013's gatherings and get togethers that prompt the kids to say- oh yeah I remember them….I'm inspired to plan some trips- Michigan friends get ready…Peter loves Michigan he needs to see it and you!  I've watched two movies with my family this weekend while working on the cards. They won't arrive by Xmas but Christmas is 12 days and they will go out and they say Happy New Year too!

I hope you're able to pause and take it in the beauty of this season. Winter has arrived in an odd way (60 with rain) our beautiful snow is gone. There is lots of ugly and worry with flooding- we try to focus on the good in our lives on Newark-Granville Road as it is there and it felt so good to take it in today.

updates!

Simple post tonight- here are some updates.  The boring under the road was successful- wahoo!  I received many texts and comments- love how our town notices.  I love the fact that Sally had an dr. appointment so I was driving by during the boring- fun to see the implement that makes this possible.
Still a lot of work to do- connection from pump to tap, interior plumbing, filling the septic system in back.

Great art exhibit at The Works tonight- Andrew, our AIR, has been fantastic and is so talented.  Thanks to those that attended- it means a lot to us all.  Busy time of year- you can still see his work this weekend and tomorrow.  He'll also join us on Feb 1st for Cocktails by the Fire.  We'll meet the new AIR at this time too. Tonight past AIR were with us- that meant a lot too!  The AIR Case looks really beautiful in the glass studio- neat to see the various styles and approaches to this ancient art form.

Welcome United Way of Licking County to The Works complex!  Our 6 acre, 11 building facility has wonderful new tenants, and tonight was their Open House/ Ribbon Cutting.  What a treat to represent The Works and share a few remarks.  The Works Board is wise to figure out this partnership and Howard LeFevre's legacy lives on in many ways as downtown supports, celebrates, teaches its own.

Clare's basketball team- GMS 7th Grade Girls- won! Woo Hoo! They are undefeated.  I was sorry to miss the game, but love text updates!

with Orange Barrels….Construction Update…..

Tomorrow is the day they bore under the road.  Long time readers are up on our sewer/septic challenges.  The orange tall barrels with caution tape on the side of our house on Fairview are marking the location of the new grinder and pump that is part of our new sewer process.  The boring is to tap into the sewer located on the other side of the road.  We were unable to repair or replace our septic tank since we have "access"- expensive and ill-navigable access but access none the less.

I do love my old house with character, history (personal meaning at that!) and the life it provides on Newark-Granville Road.  This sewer tie in isn't an easy fix for many reasons, partially the age of the house, the way it is positioned, its elevation and we're doing this step by step. The contractor told us our electric panel will need upgraded, they had to disconnect the air conditioning to feed the pump. We're now looking at quotes and the process for a generator, as if the power goes out the pump will still need to remove sewage……ahhhh country living…oh wait- we live in the village?

Many people- my east coast father- are shocked at our situation.  We have city/village water, but not sewer.  Many on Newark-Granville Road are in similar situations.  It hadn't dawned on me how many people were on septics so close to the village.  The village/township line is interesting on our side of the street as well- across the street - fairview side- is township.  

When it is all said and done I'll share the full store and recommendations to help others navigating this problem/situation.  In the meantime know why traffic may delayed tomorrow on Newark-Granville Road and what the bobcats, stone pile (to fill the unused septic tank) dirt and disarray in our yard is all about, and share the learning and updates with us on the blog!

something to look forward to…...

What a gift to wake up knowing the day will end well.  No matter what happened with the craziness of this time of year, the work load, I knew the gathering at the end would be lovely.  And it didn't disappoint.  Dinner at the Inn, an annual holiday outing with friends- I looked forward to it all day.  Mother Nature added an extra touch with light snow to make it festive and bright.  Little perks along the way today added to special touches.  How wonderful to have antiques back on Broadway, a newborn to watch sleep and be surrounded in love, chatter time with Peter, basketball shuttle with Clare and teammate/friend,  a package shipped to Florida using technology and a helpful employee, plans to keep moving forward, a crockpot meal by Joe so the family eats well while I would be too….all these things added up to make my life on Newark-Granville Road so very very special. Tonight reminds me of the importance of hope and anticipation…advent the season that teaches us these important lessons.

blessings of the skinned knee or icy roads….

Trying to find the blessings tonight…..this is one of my favorite books.   It is about parenting but I take to my life…I probably need to apply it more to parenting- some really good stuff in the 2nd book…I think I'll add that to my Santa list since I now have a teenager!!  http://www.wendymogel.com/schedule

Today I had to be coached to not be a half-empty person…those that know me, or read my blog know I'm pretty positive. However I do have negative reactions (more than you know) to things and a work snafu put me into that place. The reality is I needed a plan- plan a.2 with a plan b- that got me back into a good place.  I needed to extrovert, talk it out, bring in helpers.  The beautiful sleep-in (so rare in my house) inspired by the 2 hour delay was a lovely start to my day.  My natural tendency is a night owl- it doesn't fit the life I lead on Newark-Granville Road but it is my natural body clock. And in time of too much to do and not enough hours, days, weeks (Christmas and year end) I'll stay up way to late.  So I was happy to take bus duty and let Joe go to work. He was my hero and handled the snow days last week- I can take the delay!  However it was hours not at work and it put me behind. However by the end of the day I was able to leave in time to grab a late lunch and enjoy a NEW BELGIUM BREWING Co. beer- Ranger on tap at Beverage Source- woot-woot!  I also bought Fat Tire to bring home to Joe!  Today was the first day this very GREEN brewery's offerings were available in Ohio.  This wasn't a big deal to me until I got to know this beer and hear about it from others.  And when something comes along and enhances my work - it is worth blogging and talking about and enjoying in my life on Newark-Granville Road.

Today had some real bummers….friends are hurt, ill, not here anymore.  Diana Jones wasn't a personal friend- she helped me out and added so much to this village and community. She was a friend to Newark-Granville Road and I'm very sad about her passing.  The not so good things and bad things are indeed everywhere.  So days like this I want to crawl back into bed, but instead the dog needed a walk so I took a long one and reflected on the blessings of the skinned knee….the blessings that created a peaceful walk in the snow….the blessing with Diana I did know her, I was blessed in so many ways by her time with us here.  The hurt friends is harder but I'm blessed to be able to help them- to listen, to drop a note, to encourage when I can.I can't fix it for them but I can help as I am able. I can pray.   And I can look around and celebrate the good and hope they'll find the good that helps them too. Maybe I can buy them a Fat Tire!

PS- By the way….Fat Tire will be on tap at Cocktails by the Fire this year!! woo hoo! We'll have other New Belgiums there too and other local craft beers…and other wonderful things that help us enjoy local and celebrate sustainability that all connects to Green Revolution- a big part of 2014 @ The Works! When life is good @ the Works…life is good on Newark-Granville Road.

Oh Christmas Tree…Oh Christmas Tree….fast paced…..

We did it! The 2013 Leithauser Christmas Tree is in the house!  Joe does such a great job measuring, getting it in and ready to decorate. He also queues the ornaments and helps us keep our process moving with music to set the tone.  Great Dad and husband- thank you Joe Leithausers. It is a beautiful tree and we had a really nice afternoon and will enjoy Christmas prep all the more.  We'll also enjoy celebrating Christmas until January 6th.  Life on Newark-Granville Road is in the Christmas Spirit thanks to FPC, Denison's Lessons and Carols, family tradition and participation and the list of things to do a tiny bit shorter!

Pick-a-little, talk-a- little…or pick a lot, cheer a lot….

Today was a day of cheering and picking things out….we mixed the fun of gym time and basketball in with holiday fun!  Truly no time to get the Christmas Tree but we squeezed it in and it worked!  Due to weather our favorite place had us hiking out to the trees instead of riding on the tractor- I loved it!  Who knew I was going to get a gorgeous hike in today! And it worked in our favor as we're fast walkers and were on a time constraint with basketball.

Basketball was fun- Clare's game was cancelled but Sally and Peter had us cheering. We always enjoy our time in the bleachers with friends- old and new.  I hadn't thought about the friendships that develop in the stands until chatting with someone yesterday.  Today the realization was deeper as I watched Joe interact wiht Dad's from past teams- Dads that help coach and support coaching efforts.

And I got out into the shopping world..I have no idea how many days until Christmas. I can do the math but it will annoy me. I know I need to get a shipment out, I know I have a deadline looming with a vendor. The good news it is forcing me to shop local and I like that. I had a lovely time in town tonight and even enjoyed our Indian Mound Mall. I'm much closer than I was this afternoon.

It has been a very very happy day on Newark-Granville Road- pick-pick-pick talk/cheer cheer….Enjoy!

Dear Santa…..

It's time to write the list. I'm not sure I've done this in past years.  I of course remember the lists that led to the best boyfriend ever, the finance, the convertible, the healthy happy niece….So it seems like the time is right to share some information with Santa.

You see tonight I had the chance to spend some time with Santa- he was lovely. I made the arrangements for him to visit The Works for the Hinderer Christmas Party!! I take my role with event very seriously and was honored to help.  I did the same last year, the bonus was tonight I was able to show Santa around The Works and see his amazing affect on children. What a treat.  Tonight I did see peace on earth- the baby sleeping in his arms, the child wide eyed in wonder, the pure joy to the little girl who couldn't stay and way and flew to him whenever she could.  The card and list presented to him as soon as he was seated. No matter what was happening in the world- in that moment my life on Newark-Granville Road felt so very much at peace.

Santa walked with me and talked with me about he importance of corporate support and engaged members- that sweet man is lively and quick. I won't need to put work items on this list. I did put Grant writer on the list when we shared our Santa lists at Development Council FYI!

But at home- of course I want happy, healthy, active, respectful children. Additional adventures for us that are meaningful and stay with us- we don't have to go to Africa we can stay close to home.  I'd love to work on the home- for instance a dry back yard and sewer/septic to be all complete and healthy, clean and handled!  Santa knows I'd love to do the house projects and get things caught up- reupholster the couch and chairs, make sure everything looks as painted and pretty as the front room. The basement and bathrooms.  Probably not the year to put the screened porch on the list.  Healthy parents and siblings and their families really goes at the top- quality time with them and our dear friends is important too.  Pool time- pool really stands for perfect outlook on life- and is so important.  And just to be true to myself I'll say a gold charm - a surpass of which trip is represented…Cuba, Africa, china…I'd love the cog charm someday as well.  I'm a lucky girl- Santa will deliver some very special things he always does, my life is very complete and full. I'm very grateful Santa for all you do, represent and share for the world and in my life on Newark-Granville Road.

Yes, I'm now wearing glasses. I've been trying to get use to them and the reality is I do see better with them. It is pretty cool actually- how innovative. At some point I'll hope to get contacts but for now glasses work. We'll see what happens with sports, getting dressed up. Yesterday I left them at the office and I missed them- that is how I know they're working.  I can see without them. I could see before I went in to the exam- but there are blurry times- looking at my name tag, looking at my phone at times, not seeing as far as I use to be able to - I use to see far.  I had really good eye site.  So the good news is my eye site isn't that bad.  I'm aging, the eye is doing what a healthy normal eye does in its 40s…

Yes here is a picture of me in my glasses- fun for me to see- not bad.  But the real fun of the is photo is the story it should tell about Say YES to Glass.  Say YES to glass is funded by the Licking County Foundation.  It brings students from the amazing YES club house bringing kids together for care, support friendship, food and so much more they need- it is an amazing organization.  These students applied and were selected to study glass at The Works. For twelve weeks they learned design, the science of glass, the art of glass and so much more.  The Works strives to teach "the more you learn, the more you earn"- many valuable lessons, 21st century life skills as well as academic lessons and what we saw tonight- confidence.  These students did a wonderful job showcasing their work this work this evening and putting it up for auction.  This student really wanted to have his glass bulldog receive bids in the silent auction.  I was pulled in and had so much fun with the auction.  I out bid the mayor- yikes!  I also went home with a glass snake, flower, vase, pendant- lucky me!  I am further down my Christmas list!!  They really are beautiful pieces and knowing what went into their creation makes them all the more valuable and valued. I'm grateful to everyone that attended this event- the support, love and care was felt in the glass studio.  The Works was overflowing with good things- the board room with the Development Council Full Meeting, the meting room with the Rotary Club party- all sorts of goodness.

When it rains it pours- isn't that the truth! Good thing I like to splash in the puddles….This really is the best way to describe my life right now- it is full, full, full- full in to-dos, responsibilities and most of all blessings.  The blessings are the people who support, love, encourage, communicate, share and interact with me on so many levels.  I wouldn't be anywhere without my family, friends, colleagues, volunteers, donors, neighbors.  And in my blog world the opening statement is true too- so much to blog about today!

I could share the fun tidbits about decorating our house…we're finally bringing Christmas out- it started outside: front door- sled (from Joe's Mom and ice skates (from both our parents- we both grew up going skating on ponds) and the jiggle bell wreath- love it, remember when I bought it at Easton's Smith and Hawkin the year we painted the house.  The Merry Christmas wood wreath on the mailbox post- another favorite from Carol and Co…I miss them!  Today the "trees" are back- I had forgotten that last year I placed them in the dining room.  My Jenny Reynolds is a joy to focus on and I love the tree from Betsy Mattimoe, the St Luke Tree Auction- I have Maura Sharkey's decorated little tree- it still lights up when I plug it in; and a tree of life from the serve market at church.  I also pulled out our stockings- hand knit and gifted to us by Mrs Angle- wedding gift, then baby gifts- so very very special.  They hang on an innovative piece of iron by my old neighbor Virginia Abbott.  What a special hour pulling those items out to help celebrate this special season.  Lots more to do…so more blog material!

I could also talk about the amazing HATSOFF! meeting this morning- what a treat to work with dedicated talented leaders- HATSOFF! 2014 will be amazing.  To learn more save the date of January 23 in the evening…again blog material will be flowing- thanks Dan and Emily Wilson, Pat and Linda Jeffries!  Tied to that and yesterday's physics lesson- for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction- I hit my too tired and done point later in the morning and was encouraged by Marcia Downes to take a break. I finished some key work (with errors- sigh) and headed to a massage for some R and R.  Leslie's Eleven Massage did the trick!  I then came home to make a yummy dinner and enjoy being with the kids and just staying home- other than a quick short cold walk/run with the dog.

But the real fun today was the laughter and honest dialogue in the kitchen on Newark-Granville Road.  Sally brought home her youth dictionary presented to her by the Heath Rotary Club.  I heard about the Pataskala Rotary doing this and was so impressed so I was very pleased Sally was excited about hers.  The fun of being home and puttering in the kitchen is the easy quality time with the kids.  Sally was just hanging with me when she brought it to me and showed me a note she had added to the book- S/E/X on page X H/E/L/L on page X- she said see this book has these words.  I kept cooking, chopping and then it hit me…hmmm I wonder what how these words are defined. And if she is asking then we'd better chat…so I had her read them out loud and then we talked about the fact she is a female and some basic thoughts about faith. It was pretty simple and that is as far as it went.  Some how it came up that this discussion had happened on the bus….does anything good happen on the bus?  but I kept a straight face and enjoyed the conversation not pushing for too much, letting Sally share with me.  Then after dinner while I was doing the dishes Sally enthusiatily shared her new dictionary with Joe.  I went back to our earlier conversation and got the giggles- I told her to show Daddy the words she had found.  I was in serious quiet giggle mode - I know not appropriate mother behavior but I coudn't help it.  Sally luckily ignored me and moved on to another room.  Joe and I then took to other dictionaries and inquired about what words where included and how defined.  The very young dictionary we have on the counter was similar to Sally's new one, however it does include male and female body parts and the new one does not.  Silly I know- for a quick moment I was back in time remembering learning about such things, feeling like a giggly awkward child and then jumping to responsible parent.  Peter and Sally came in as Joe and I were doing this and we honestly shared - our youngest children engaged a bit with us but didn't feel like talking about accurate definition of  body parts for long.  Yes Life on Newark-Granville Road is good tonight- I've laughed, cried and spent the evening with my family.

Sooo many great things to blog about today- a banner day.  An exhausting day, a day that required a 2nd wind, maybe even a third to get the blog posted….but the energy provided was wonderful.  Here are the highlights of the day, saving the best for last.

1. Ladies luncheon- we've loved "Family Matters"- the art exhibit in the gallery at The Works- since the beginning.  It is innovative, historic, scientific, whimsical and we just like it. We've embraced the 50s theme and had fun…those that read this blog on a regular basis have had their fair share of chatter about this exhibit and this fun.  So today was a luncheon for top donors and what a treat it was to execute.  Thanks to friends and amazing colleagues we pulled it off in an elegant and special way.  Park National Bank is quite a partner to The Works!

2. What are you drinking on Monday….I hope a New Belgium Brewing Co beer! They're available on Monday, December 16th- Fat Tire is pretty tasty. The IPA- Ranger is crisp and delicious, the Triple a favorable beverage that pairs well with food and the Accumulation- gone by February- a winter ale- was festive and a good drink on our snow day day.  Mateisch Distributing is another corporate partner to The Works- they value our innovation and workforce preparation and align us with companies that help us showcase our mission for our adult life long learners.  NBB is one of those companies- I spent my evening learning about the amazing sustainability efforts, the inspiration and innovation behind their net zero footprint in Colorado.  oh yes and I interacted with great folks with fun passion for craft beer.

3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!  Always nice to chat with my Mom, even better on her birthday.  Sad news from my home town about a childhood family friend's wife's death- makes us appreciate how fragile life is and what a gift it is.

4. Coming home to see Clare's smile as she showed the success of her Rube Goldberg. She is doing this as a class assignment for 7th grade.  The night wrapped up with her discussing Newton's Law of Physics showcased in her Goldberg.  When I stopped in at the end of the day she was close but not there yet.  The duck tape on the ceiling, around the new drapes post and antique desk were not that pleasing but her dedication was sweet.  When I returned from evening at work (yes point 2 was work!!) she was so pleased to share the final product and video.  I have included a picture. I also love how she smiles with braces and shines in science!

Life on Newark-Granville road has many happy moments. Sally was sweet as sweet can be when she answered the phone- she had a good day with her Dad. Life on Newark-Granville Road highlights is possible because Joe supports my work.  Peter's description of sledding and reading with Joe warms my heart too- a good one for the books all around on Newark-Granville Road.

gym time…..

I've shared get tickets- make a date and stick to it with tickets.  Well another way to accomplish this- see your kids play their games.  I love having to leave the office to get to a game.  With 3 kids playing 3 sports and engaged in other things and our responsibilities we're not parents that attend every game. We value other parents that do this and cheer for our kids and help with rides!! But we do our best to see as many as we can. Tonight was a great example of fun gym time!  I packed up at 4 and was out the door- in the gym by 4:45 for the 5 pm game!

Clare was thrilled to make the 7th grade basketball team.  We're in real sports now- she can't miss school on the day of games, she gets to stay after school on game days and have a team meal before riding the bus. And the pace is fast and talent is high- we're watching real basketball!  I took in a game last week in Johnstown- what a treat.  Clare didn't love the gym or small locker rooms- old school (nostalgic for me) but I was happy to be back there, remember the fun of Rec ball there.  Tonight was more fun as Joe joined me with Sally and Peter and we all watched and cheered for Clare and the Lady Aces at home!  She scored two baskets- one which led to a foul shot that she didn't make. She hustled and looked good on the court.  She's got some work to do- the top players have been together and have talent. We'll boost her confidence and encourage more practice and skill development.  She works hard and listens to coaches- she'll have a good year as will we!

On Saturday we took in Sally's first game- as I climbed the bleachers and settled in I sighed a happy sigh.  I love the feel of the gym- seeing teammates parents, watching all that goes on with the older kids, refs, coaches, teams.  Sally is playing bigger ball too- last year was sweet with 2nd graders playing lots of 2nd graders but now we've got 4th graders on our team and these kids move the ball. Sally scored- woo and kept up well. She was nervous as she has missed practices due to the Nutcracker- worried she wouldn't play and know "play" but this is rec ball and we have a great coach.  She got her uniform, number 33 and was encouraged and welcomed- she hit the floor happy and ready to go.

Peter's team plays Saturday- what fun it will be to see this team in action. I've been hearing about them for weeks as Joe is the coach.  He's seeing development, learning and improvement already- many on the team are new to the sport.  Peter will be their leader and take the responsibility seriously, plus make it fun. We'll add tree hunting to the 3 basketball games on Saturday- should be a special day in the gyms on Newark-Granville Road.

kitchen time and holiday spirit!

I love my kitchen time and I'm craving it big time right now.  One would think Tgiving gave me enough but that was one meal, although it did provide lots of left overs. Reality is my Mom helped a lot with the pies, and brought soup for our night before meal.  So I don't feel like I've done much cooking lately.  Joe and I were going to go out for breakfast to do our planning/plotting Christmas purchases- yes we know we're behind- no reminders. We're prioritizing based on turnaround time and delivery needs (Florida shipment).  But today I just didn't want to go out to eat.  I made creamed chipped beef (no flour so Bisquick worked), cut up the grapefruit (using handy special grapefruit knife) and made a fruit salad for those that didn't want the grapefruit.  It was great.  I also took my alone time to clean the kitchen but even that was satisfying for my life on Newark-Granville Road today!

I hope you're enjoying the beauty this snow provides- really gorgeous here!  Last night's walking tour in Granville couldn't of had a prettier back-drop.  We have never really embraced the walking tour big time- the crowds, parties, kids activities pull us in directions.  We did enjoy two events last night- bluegrass at Park National Bank was outstanding. I'll miss the student recital next Friday at 7 at Swasey so this was a good substitute! Clare was part of the Youth Choir at FPC with Ladies Night Out- what a treat! It all certainly puts me in a happy Christmas spirit- even if I'm behind and just putting away Giving.  We're in planning mode on Newark-Granville Road and we'll get there!

let it snow, let it snow, let it snow....

Picking up on where we left off with last night's blog for my dear readers following along about my life on Newark-Granville Road.....the beautiful snow isn't keeping any fun from happening.  I'm grateful to my parents for teaching me how to drive in the snow.  Living in Altoona, Pa probably helped that- necessity kept us driving in the winter....in the snow- it was winter, it snowed, we drove.  We skied at Blue Knob- a ski "resort" that was an old army base and lodge on top of resort- so to access skiing- you drove up a snowy mountain.  For some reason tonight's snowy drive reminded me of PA snow driving.

So we indeed get a snow day  - so Clare's conflict was removed.  The weather wasn't as treacherous as anticipated so Joe kept the kids and I went to work to help execute our Volunteer Lunch and keep moving forward on the long to-do list.  Hip Hip Hooray for the volunteers- they braved the concern of weather and joined us for a lovely luncheon.  Festive, fun traditions, opportunity to take in the exhibits and be together- good time- important times.  As usual duty called and I was late to get home- made it in time to do the quick turn around for Sally's Nutcracker Ball- a fun dance for the cast of the Nutcracker performance.  As I drove home in the snow I heard about all the cancellations- I thought certainly this event would not go-on with the weather. I was wrong and I was pleased - driving in snow requires us to slow down, use the tools available- good tires, 4 wheel drive- we were able to attend as planned and have a great night.  The kids (and some adults) danced, looked great in their dress up cloths, created new traditions, and strengthened friendships.  Sally and her friend enjoyed the night and she'd like to go back next year.  I sat and took it all in- the longest I've sat all week in my life on Newark-Granville Road.  

So no hang-out day yet...it will come, I'll get one soon enough.  I'm lucky to have a busy, full life I love and am grateful I can appreciate the beauty the snow brings.  It certainly is beautiful on Newark-Granville Road- art exhibit, special music and gatherings await tomorrow!

which way do I go.......

We had a wonderful dog named Jax.  We didn't name him- he came with that name.  That didn't stop us with later dogs.  Jax was a bouvier we adopted/rescued and he loved us.  He came to us when I was pregnant with Clare. I could blog and blog and blog about that dog.  When we got him he could barely walk around the block. He had been locked up in a kennel all day and not permitted to roam the house as he would scratch the hardwood floors. He roamed our house and slept with us. We took him on long walks.  One day we walked to the village (Granview, not Granville) and Joe went to do one errand and I went another way- I was going to the post office.  That poor dog was so torn- which way do I go he said with his eyes.  Motherhood is like this, maybe parenthood but I'm not a father and this blog is my perspective.  I want a snow day tomorrow so a hardship for Clare is reduced.  I don't want a snow day because I want the Volunteer luncheon to occur easily- I want the weather to miss us and our volunteers can easily get to The Works to enjoy the day just for them.  I want a snow day to cuddle with my kids and let them sleep in.....I want to walk our current dog to town with the kids and he won't have to make a decision.....the good news it is all out of my control.  No matter how many ice cubes get flushed and what direction my PJs are....I don't get a say in the weather....so here I type trying to ride the wave, sit loosely in the saddle on Newark-Granville Road.

Happiness Is.......

early productive, positive work meetings that get to include River Road coffee and a bagel; quality time with Sally at the orthadontist that started with Soup Loft and candy cane Whits and bringing her back to the office, coming home to fresh baked chocolate chip cookies by Peter and Barbara, Peter's band concert- they make real music and I recognized all his practice; seeing so many friends- love this class; oyster stew with Joe, sharing vintage clothes with Clare, scheduling time to get the tree, watching TV, blogging with my feet up in the living room.....

not enough hours in the day, days in the week, etc..

So it was a great day back at work today- great day! I went in ready to go, excited about the tasks ahead- I love everything I'm working on.....but there were not enough hours to do it all. I had to make a quick escape for Mom duty and then went back to work.  Then hurried up and got a number of important tasks done and headed out for more work with fun- did I say how much I love my job and how it does blend with fun!

So Joe is dealing with the same thing in his volunteer sports coaching world. I'm seeing it as parents reach out about conflicts with Sunday practices and games....tomorrow is supposed to be Peter's first basketball game- just figured out the way to connect with the out-of-town coach- can't do it- 6th-grade music concert tomorrow. Why is it so complicated now? Why can't it be more simple?  If the 6th graders are singing, playing music then the Granville Rec certainly knows that and doesn't schedule a game- we're a village.  A simple community where we are aware of such overlaps...We're a good community that prioritizes and values church time- certainly, you can do church and sports too....why is it getting so hard to keep it going?

I don't have the answers in my life on Newark-Granville Road. I share tonight as maybe you do have some thoughts and input? Maybe we're taking it too seriously and should accept we can't do it all and games will get rescheduled and kids will learn life lessons from the disappointment of their friends getting their first games this week and they'll wait.  Life on Newark-Granville Road includes many lessons that I share often- 3 steps forward, 2 back, and so on and so on...we try to sit loosely in the saddle of life and ride the waves....Impromptu gatherings can be the best the lesson for me tonight.  We're doing good things and there are rewards on Newark-Granville Road...but the planner in me wants to find ways and times to make it work.  We do our best, we ask for help and support and we move forward one way or another in my life on Newark-Granville Road!

a day off....

So much to share about today...a day off of work, well timed from the weekend and full in so many ways.  Instead of expanding on subjects, I'll just share the day's activities and maybe some will inspire future blog posts.....

1. Slept in...yes...Joe did bus duty- hip hip hooray and Sally and I stayed in bed! Of course Peter called about his forgotten trumpet and Joe and I chatted but I cat napped off and on from 6 am- it was lovely.
2. Took my time getting dressed, helped Sally pick out her clothes with no stress of a missed bus!
3. Went downstairs to get ready to leave, thinking Sally was walking dog with amazing helper Barbara.  Barbara came back- no Sally.  (yes we've misplaced her a few times and this felt a bit like the Clare being with Joe on a walk when she was 3)  I went up stairs and re-looked- she was curled up asleep in her bed, buried deep in blankets.  Good news is I swept the kitchen and tidied while waiting for Sally.
4. Took Sally to coffee shop, delivered Peter's trumpet, took Sally to school.
5. Holiday coffee - annual tradition!! Nutcracker performance and this well decorated home with huge artistic accomplishment and attention to detail, plus wonderful people to connect with- I'm ready to embrace Christmas!! Fa-la-la-la-la!
6. Came home - discarded some pumpkins- see point 5, cleaned piles, updated the weekly schedule, started moving forward with December.  Also enjoyed Maryland yummies for lunch- Baltimore Market's chicken salad, Utz chips and a cookie from same market- reminiscent of Hutlzer's Bakery....ahhhh
7. Eye appointment- first one in a long long time...I'm going with glasses.....bi-focals- who knew I had  astigmatism and not so perfect vision anymore..I use to have 20-15....oh well....its okay- I knew I was adjusting and compensating....we'll see how this goes.  Enjoyed time with my Dr and am happy i have healthy eyes.
8. Dropped off invitations and gift for friend in new role- woo hoo Penny Sitler with MHA! So nice to chat and catch-up a bit!
9. Home to meet kids from school, do some reading with Peter, help Sally prep for music concert.
10. Removed pumpkins from front of house with Peter's help!
11. REALLY enjoyed Sally's 3rd grade musical presentation- innovative, creative, original, well timed- darling darling.  And good to see Sally's classmates and their parents!
12. Book Club Holiday Dinner and book exchange....I have the best book club- what a lovely group with an amazing tradition.  So good to gather around the table and catch-up, discuss a fun book (always a lighter read for this one) and then swap books- allegedly one's we've read and are pulling from our shelves. Everyone went home with one they haven't read- woo hoo!
13. Quick review of the week, tidy in the kitchen with Joe, blog update and I'm ready for bed!
I needed a day like today in my life on Newark-Granville Road!

Nutcracker-Thanksgiving Weekend- It is a Wrap!

Ahhhh- we did it!  True team effort- two Thanksgiving family gatherings and the four Nutcracker Performances, plus tech week and cast party @ The Works- it is a wrap!  All went so well...Thursday's report was blog theme, so Nutcracker is tonight's- the why and the lessons.

Why the Nutcracker- fond memories of the lessons it taught Clare.  Clare danced in it twice I believe. She attended as a child to see friends dance and to continue a holiday tradition my parents started with me.  I love the music and story and various interpretations.  Clare loved it too and wanted to dance- it is a big reason we started ballet, which wasn't the first dance we were able to make work- tap and jazz. Ballet made its way and Nutcracker gave her all sorts of experience.  The holiday is often one for traveling for us so not always a fit.  Sally started lessons at some point along they way and  this year was old enough to audition. She didn't have a fall sport so this was her thing this fall to stay active and glean the lessons of the stage.  We asked the Stoner clan to travel to Licking County for Stoner Thanksgiving and we're grateful they did!  Wonderful long weekend with my family I don't see often enough- thank goodness for cell phones and email to keep us connected.

COYB is an impressive group - the mission to have youth execute, create, unite and deliver is really something to behold.  This year my daughter wasn' the only one learning my volunteer role backstage for one performance and executing cast party gave me new perspectives.  First - the hard work it takes to make it all go.  I knew it before but it is something to be a helper back stage and witness the stitching, the chart for quick-change, the energy beyond just what the audience sees to get to all the right cues, in the right costumers from hair to shoes and eye/hooks in between.  The auditions in August, rehearsals on the weekend all were out of sight, out of mind a bit for me.  I certainly knew Sally was learning and many were working hard but I didn't understand the depth and detail until this weekend.  So much more to be grateful for- the friends and adults that care deeply for our youth and coach, teach, support.  I also have to share how pleased I was with the students and how they help one another, figure out their processes, ask for help and show appreciation for the support they receive.  I loved sharing it with friends and their children and hope more friends will join this family.   I must say thank you to all that bought tickets and attended- this means a great day and is part of my positive reflection!!  Sally says she'll audition next year and we both will apply the lessons learned to deepen the experience.

I'm glad we check this off our list and it is in the book. Life on Newark-Granville creates so many valuable memories and Thanksgiving 2013 didn't disappoint. So now I'm off to bed with visions of sugarplums, shortbreads and snowflurries in my head. The music is playing too- good thing I really love it!
