happy moments

Happiness….is holding a tiny baby- not even a month old…sigh….picking up a book club book that sounds really good…..a TV show being new….kids delight and ohhs and ahhhs….wearing summer clothes even though is is under 20 degrees….enjoying home cooked food, you didn't cook, the sound of the blender, watching your children at home and happy with other families.  Life on Newark-Granville road filled these happy moments today.

Spring Break Planning!

Quick blog update- more to come….we're excited to be working on our spring break plans over here on Newark-Granville Road!  One thing that is in the works is the overnight hike on the Appalachian Trail for Joe and the big kids.  Clare is reading Bill Byson's A Walk in The Woods to help prepare.

Another piece has come together recently and I'm excited to share! The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art and Technology is a Smithsonian Affiliate. This means many good things for the Works and our members. We'd like to highlight this by offering a special tour to our members who might also be in DC over spring break! On Thursday March 27th our group of Works members and their guests will have early access with a tour of the new exhibit "American Cool" in the Portrait Gallery!  History and Art will be our focus in the morning.  In the afternoon our family will make sure we find some science to explore in a special way!! I'll keep you posted here, via The Works communications, facebook and twitter and of course in person conversations.  Ask me about this- I'm excited!!  To prepare we are now Works Family Club Members- this gives us access to some cool things including the Smithsonian Level membership so in DC we'll get 10% off food and shop items and the Smithsonian magazine will make its' way into our lives on Newark-Granville Road again- I've missed it.

Our last spring break trip to DC was very special and we're excited to have it back in the plan for 2014. If you have favorite DC restaurants, things to do please let us know! And by all means if your going to be close to DC join us on the 27th!! Life on Newark-Granville Road is all about adventure and we love to share it!

Never say never…...

New Albany is only a 15 min- maybe 20 minute drive…good thing as my Life on Newark-Granville will include more time there this spring.  We've signed Sally up for Lax there this year.  Not enough girls here to field the 3-4th grade team for Rec Lax. Sally loved playing on a team last year, wasn't crazy about her earlier experience with a clinic and when we asked New Albany and they emailed us the practice schedule- it worked for us!  I love the reactions of her siblings- Clare: they have great teams, when we play them they're strong- Sally will get good.  Peter: wow the fields are really nice- Sally will like playing there.

So the thing is Joe and I were committed to keeping sports simple, supporting our recreation league in town.  We never judged anyone else for the decision to play in Newark or beyond- we got it.  We thought we'd be able to keep it really local.  No secret on the blog I've talked about keeping academics, arts in balance with sports and the idea of drive time can put that out of kilter…back to the I learned today that it is only about 15 -20 min to New Albany today.

I'll keep you posted how it goes- so far so good.  We are hoping to work with other parents and the Rec to get a successful clinic going this year to build interest for a team next year. In the mean time Sally is super excited- she played Tball, she swims in meets, she plays basketball and soccer all in game format. She watches a LOT of games her siblings play so I get it- she wants to play. I want to encourage and nurture this active girl so a driving I will go off Newark-Granville Road.

Update- I also share this to say thank you in advance to the help this community has and I'm sure will provide to us.  Three kids playing three different sports will require us to ask for help with transportation. We're very fortunate to have these folks already in our lives on Newark-Granville Road. And we love to reciprocate. Clare couldn't of played basketball this year without that kind of help.  Sally and Peter both love not only coaching time with their coaches but drive and play time with coaches families. So I share the never say never, knowing I get to say yes thanks to others saying yes. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to say yes to helping you too.  Let the juggling, passing and teamwork continue on Newark-Granville Road.

tears to my eyes…...

A full wonderful day in my life on Newark-Granville Road.  Lucky me to be at The Works connecting, supporting, helping as able execute STEMfest.  The day wrapped up with the announcement of the winners for the Wing Design problem sponsored by Boeing.  Heritage Middle School swept the competition. These amazing, well led, cared for with such intention students rocked it.  Seeing their joy over winning this competition brought tears to my eyes.  This is a school where most of the kids are on free and reduced lunch but you'd never know it by the way they presented themselves. Their teacher was the energizer bunny- everywhere supporting all the teams and their competition.  All of the problems and all of the teams made me pause and say WOW!  The youth of America are just fine- here they are on a Saturday doing academic challenges- wow!  As I type I tear up for their efforts and all that I know that goes to make this happen for the Granville kids engaging, leading and inspiring growth with robotics and more, the parents, teachers, bankers, administrators, retired industry leaders and so many more there today to make this a huge success not for The Works but our community's future workforce and citizens.

I also get teary thinking back to the start of my day- Clare getting up an hour early to have breakfast with me to support the Kiwanis pancake breakfast- I savor these moments.  The sun shining and Joe taking the kids to dance, lax, a run and some baseball fun- active deep breathing of fresh air and getting Griffey out and about.  Life on Newark-Granville Road brings happy happy tears.

playing games....hands-on learning

Picture the scene:  a dining room, children's laughter and cheers, the aroma of good food, the mummer of conversation the clank of silverware- that was what was happening on the 2nd floor in the dining room at MCC last night. An event I've wanted for a long time- winter fun at MCC as a family.  Joseph Moore is doing great things for this club.

The Leithauser family was to "coordinate" and host- we didn't do a great job spreading the word. We'll do better next time.  Joseph Moore, new Club Manager, did a wonderful job setting it all up, coordinating really fun "Minute to Win It" activities and facilitating them with the kids and adults that wanted to play.  After a long week I was happy to sit at the table and enjoy the children's (ours and others) engagement.  Once I had decompressed a bit, enjoyed my cocktail I did join adult friends for nice catch-up while kids enjoyed more games including 2nd floor hide and seek.  Before that  I did play some games too at our table. I picked up "tenzie" and the old fashioned golf-tees in triangle block games at The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art and Technology's Gear Shop.  We all loved both of these last night.

Didn't know about these fun opportunities at MCC- let me help connect you!! Email me at ssleithasuer@roadrunner.com  Joe is serving on the board there now and we're both committed to helping a place that connects us to good friends and gives us the break in our busy lives on Newark-Granville Road.

The Hands-On Learning continues.....not sure why STEMfest @ The Works isn't on my - see me at these events to the right of the blog......I'm here and ready to go- ready to see lots of friends, Works members and guests today.  Volunteers and amazing staff make this competition and special activity day happen- you really don't want to miss it. 12-4 both Saturday and Sunday and congrats to the teams competing- Middle School (Sat) and High School (Sun)- you inspire me!  Come check it out- track me down so I can help you not miss out on the fun- things happening all over the museum for all ages!

celebrating 15 Years!

quick post tonight to share the fun of our anniversary.  15 years today Joe and I were married. I loved the day for so many reasons.  Someone posted on FB that we've certainly packed a lot in - 3 active kids, great trips, amazing family time, careers/job shifts and community joy- we're in a good place together and very very blessed.   Life on Newark-Granville Road is what it is thanks to these fifteen years! Here's to the next 15!  I did the math- 1/3 rd of my life with Mr. Leithauser- certainly the best I've had- the base with my Stoner family, the other 1/3rd growing supported by friends and colleagues and now these past 15- lucky lucky me!! Bronte said is well- "grow old with me, the best is yet to be" the love as the foundation makes this so. "we love because it's the only true adventure" Nikki Giovanni- another great quote that make me smile- what fantastic adventures Joe and I have had and god wiling will continue to await with Newark-Granville Road as home base.

Shout out for the Dog Days of Winter…..

Walking the dog more than usual because of Joe's travel schedule. I like walking the dog and I've shared perspectives on the blog before. Today I'd like to Griffey a little winter kudos. He's been a champ, totally rolling with the cold, snow, etc..etc…  He isn't a dog that won't go when there is snow on the ground- yay Griffey.  He doesn't go on the cleared sidewalk either- when it is time to do the business he jumps into or onto depending on icing and temperature- and crosses the task off our list.  When it has been super cold (below zero and even well below zero) he is quick to produce.

Recently we did the walk that included the deep snow of the unplowed/uncleared bike path.  For the record I call the bike path what is to the south of our house a good bit- runs along the river, goes for miles and miles.  The path across the street on Newark-Granville Road is a wider sidewalk or path for bikes on Newark-Granville Road- not the bike path. I guess the bike path I refer to is the TJ Evans path to be formal. Anyway our usual good loop to get the dog some exercise and good air/thoughts for the walker is to go down Fairview, cut over to Vill Edge and back up to NG Road and home.  Getting to the bike path can be a task, I almost lost a boot. I sunk deep into the pile of snow I was traversing to get to the path- plowed up snow- pretty deep and the melting started so I sunk and when I went to pull foot up and out- the boot stayed- oops.  Griffey was patient and avoided electric fence shock as did I- bonus points for us!   I did that loop last week and it reminded me of pheasant hunting in Nebraska- deep snow, big march like steps.

I saw a funny post about slip-sliding on the side walk on Facebook. Poor Griffey has hit more ice patches covered by snow and his feet just fishtail out- or spread eagle out- but he keeps moving pretty well. From my vantage point it is rather comical.  I should laugh I've done my share of near fall slips today too!

The lesson in all of this is- be careful out there, it is slippery, wet and danger lurks. HOWEVER get out there and enjoy it!! And to the awesome folks out there enjoying it- keep it up- you inspire me and Griffey and our lives on Newark-Granville Road.

facebook support…...

Good morning- lots weighing on me today as I type.  Yesterday was one of those up days- so many good things going on, even hard things were on the table and progress being made.  But there are never enough hours to get it done the way I want it done or worked out so I continue to learn how to focus on the good and keep moving forward.  This is the way I live my life on Newark-Granville Road.  I won't go into all the nitty gritty details of why it was up- part of it was kids were safe and engaged on a non school day, much had to do with work, some had to do with giving to others…and some was getting to curl up in bed with the i-pad and watch a TV show I missed with the dog keeping my toes warm.  Some was the warm walk in the 30s- despite the icy rain making today's plans unclear but it felt good not to be freezing walking the dog.

Then this morning- a school delay- darn. The  "No school" can be easier to deal with- I had that plan.  The delay just delays and I don't do well with delays…delays at work, home, schedules make me go argh…I get over it and I work with it…letting kids sleep-in today- they need it- Sally has a cold she needs it.  But my "crispiness" shows with delays….but I reflect I think I've progressed- I use to be much less patient with delays- I think about my reaction to traffic in the mid 90s in Detroit- not pretty.

So a bonus of the delay is a little facebook time!!  I'm still amazed by this technology- how much I value the opportunity to say happy birthday to my sorority little sister in Greece so easily- that is how we reconnected.  And now I will say Happy Birthday to my true little sister Sarah- she has joined facebook- woo hoo! She is overwhelmed with it and I get that.  It will be interesting to see how she utilizes it.  I'm fascinated by the technology and algorithms- who sees what when how- why do some things pop and others don't.  I'm grateful for the Granville Rec post today- I need those kind of reminders (See Sunday's post). I'm grateful links to blogs like the one below show-up a few time as when I see it I may not click the first time-often that is the case.  I do the quick look over FB but don't spend much time out there- more frequent peeks than in depth reads.  This blog link was something I needed- the topic although not directly on my mind has points that have been up front and raising their hand in my life on Newark-Granville Road.  I also want others to see this blog- it is a goody.

I know I couldn't of survived without those mommy talks and play group moms.  My friends are the ones that lift me up and connect me in ways that keep me in happy places like yesterday.  Life is indeed figure eights with our moods and our connections, factors of where we are "on the motion of the 8" are infinite but people and relationships are the wind for the sails of that journey.  Things shift and move all the time and being able to sit loosely and enjoy the ride is key.  Im' learning thanks to posts and support, conversations in person and on-line and I'm grateful. I hope you will read this blog- it is a good one and thanks to Facebook for bringing it to me.

making plans….

I always benefit from hearing how others help navigate the fun of a busy home- stay home or working mom- we've all got things to do and not enough time to get it done.  Organization and planning is key, as well as teamwork and collaboration. I'm always grateful for the friend that says- remember we have X meeting. Remember sign-ups for X sport are this week- it is always sooner than I think it is- kind of like those buyers for the retail stores- they have the spring line complete when I'm just ready to move to boots vs open toed shoes.

I don't mind sharing the little things that help me - you've all heard the big picture food planning that was huge for me when kids were younger- Monday pasta, Tuesday food fetti like tacos- things that made mess, Wed we ate out as previous mentinoed food was cleaned, Thursday casseroles and Friday pizza.  Sunday was something big that would be good for leftovers or took more time to cook, family favorite like salmon cakes-mac n cheese.  Now the planning for meals includes- which day is crock pot meal and what do the kids want.  Chipolte Pork is a favorite, chicken with salsa a close 2nd. Roast Chicken on a salad is 3rd place right now.

So how do I even think about the meal planning- it all comes from "this week at the Leithausers" a document I update on Sundays and the sooner the better.  Lately I've updated early in the morning and I feel all the more ready for church and the day.  The grocery list and meal planning is directed by this document saying who goes where when how showcasing our needs- sitters, rides, eating at home.

It also builds excitement- this week we're all looking forward STEMFEST!! It is here-it is here- it is here! The event that has grown to be the anchor to STEM programming at The Works. The inspiration to inspire amazing people and companies to engage with us and bring other good things year round to our community. STEM skills need attention and growth in the US.  Manufacturing is alive and well in Licking County- I've seen it live and in person - and there are jobs that go with this- good jobs.  There are companies that offer training and careers.  Licking County needs this tax base and economic system in place but it won't thrive without a workforce. The Works is in partnership to prepare that workforce.

STEM fest is FUN!  Make your plans to visit The Works this Saturday and Sunday. Cheer on the teams competing- Middle School is Saturday, High School Sunday.  3 programs- civil engineering with toothpicks and glue bridges, bio-fuels in partnership with Denison's Chemistry Dept and Boeing and their wing design and wind tunnel.  Fun hands-on learning that teach and promote 21st century skills- presentation and communication is a key to success!  I could type and type and type about this…but know as I put "this week at the Leithausers" together that was the first thing that went into the plan. Saturday is Joe's birthday and Thursday we celebrate our 15th Anniversary so you'll here more the good things in my Life on Newark-Granville Road!!

favorite gift on Valentines Day….

So when we go to The Fish Fry….for us it is the St. Edwards in Granville. We love to have a cocktail here, invite friends, walk down…this doesn't always work- snow, rain…but I have fond memories and am thinking positive now and visualizing that light spring weather to accompany this beloved activity.  Anyway- when we go to fish fries often extra "beer" tickets make their way to us.  It started when I went pregnant and Joe received my tickets and then people would be walking out, having not used theirs and give them to us- we love it! We love enjoying this wonderful community event where people linger and catch-up and support this parish.

So today I realized we've grown up, now when people have Scotch they don't want, or receive and won't consume- they give it to us. I received a beautiful bottle today- best Valentines gift received on Newark-Granville Road. Joe recently received a peaty single malt for above reason. this makes me smile.

St Valentines Day on Newark-Granville Road…there are indeed saints in our world…the ones who give scotch and so much more, Rotary Roses- these lead to service above self, the cake pop baker/delivery driver, the volunteer who coordinated Valentines Tea at Kendal for two darling girl scout troops….Life is filled with love of good things on Newark-Granville Road.

mesmerized and warm!

Yes I found a way to be warm today!!!  Actually I was quite cozy, toasty in my bed this morning. Our beautiful old house did well earlier in this extreme cold snap but this week was tough on her.  Upstairs kept the cold out and we all slept well.  We had a good morning with homework being finished, hot breakfast and a ride to school for Sally and Peter- it was nice but it was still cold.  The -11 degree dog walk not only fogged my glasses it froze the fog to the glass.

Driving to work and even being in the museum still had me chilled.  I found my way to the glass studio and put myself in front of the furnace- it felt good. As soon as I stepped a few feet away- cold cold cold again.  A productive day warmed the spirit and kept me moving. I admit I didn't sit at my desk much- I wanted to be in motion to ward off the chill.

Around 3 pm I found myself back in the glass studio.  I started to watch the exciting project of remaking the goblet in a bottle project and I couldn't leave. I tried a few times. I tried to join the team building art project- no go- I was totally mesmerized by the glass blowing. I was so impressed with their teamwork. The high school student's comfort to jump in and assist, the experts comfort with the high school student. These artist are professionals- they know the science and the art- they respect the history- it is awesome.  The temperatures they work with are amazing and I smiled as they referred to things as cold- it is all relative.  They protected one another, juggled- it was almost like watching a puzzle be put together by teamwork.

I enjoy the warmth I have in my Life on Newark-Granville Road - the oven, brownies for the pot-luck at work, the glass studio's furnace, the passion we have under this roof- it is serving us well this cold winter night.

valuing other blogs….this one connects to my life on Newark-Granville Road!

http://ecotheo.org/2014/02/homecoming/

I love this blog….of course I do- picture of Newark-Granville Road!  The writer gave a sermon at church a few weeks ago- I LOVED IT!  I laughed, I cried, I watched my children listen and engage.  This piece speaks to me as I miss my  hometown at times, yet feel my roots growing deeper as my children's take foot here on Newark-Granville Road.

Enjoy another perspective…life on Newark-Granville Road enjoys blogging and reading blogs!

progress on the court…..

The basketball goddess is smiling…..Clare's game at 6:30 tonight, Sally's at 8…Sally played a team that had a Dad at Clare's game so she was able to get a ride…I was able to stay and watch the team win and see Clare play and score- woo hoo!  Then Peter I made it the Intermediate School in time to watch Sally's team battle it out for a one point win- woo hoo!

So Sally's team- Sally's in 3rd grade. Last year it was just 2nd graders playing one another back and forth up and down the court- fun, skill building, fun love of game development, exercise, active happy girls- great coaches, lots of encouragement and fun on the side lines waiting turns- cheers, gymnastics, chitter chatter.  This year- the real deal and the 3rd graders had some catching up to do.  We have some great little players but they didn't look at all like a team.  Big shout out to the great Dad coaches who based on tonight's game have really taught the girls plays, developed their skills all while keeping it fun.  Competition is in there to and that is great for all of these girls.  The "Lean In" movement tell us our girls need this- they need to want to be part of the game, be competitive- and our girls looked great on the court tonight. I'm also happy they still have fun, show lots of enthusiasm and passion- all of them.  We played an outstanding Granville Team tonight. They all have shown tremendous progress in this season on Newark-Granville Road and I'm a proud mama.

So Clare's team.  Clare is playing with a team that is quite impressive.  Many of these girls have been together on travel team and are really really impressive- the 3 point shots, the drives, the ball handling, from day 1 I've been impressed with the speed/pace of this game.  I'm so glad Clare made the team and has had this opportunity. She too has grown and progressed, developed her game and is having fun being with this team. She is staying active and that is good for all of us.  The team moves on to the championship game- they are undefeated and have had quite the season. Thanks to the coach, parents, players for making this such a great experience for my "baby girl"!

Thursday will be another basketball focus day….Clare plays in Utica against Watkins, Peter's team, coached by Joe plays in Granville- unfortunate scheduling for Joe.  Life on Newark-Granville Road is truly about progress and fun to see it happening in the classroom, the court, the house and most of all in all of those that live here.

New Cold Normal….

Ahhh- where will our kids go to college….Joe and I have fun with this "dream/game" for a long time. He visited Stanford and called me and said- if she wants to go this far away to a school like this- she can.  My parents gave me the - we have to be able to drive you, drop you off and get back- days driving radius.  I figured out that radius on the map and looked at schools on that perimeter.  Whittenburg was one- we stopped to see Denison, overnight in Granville (my mother's suggestion) and the rest is history.  When we moved to Granville - the quintessential hometown to raise a family-a pause for me was realizing our kids would most likely not attend our Alma mater.  We really don't know where they'll go - we have fun driving through college towns- Peter loves his Duke Baseball shirt from last summer's drive home lunch location. Sally recently asked about Wake Forest. This is as much fun for Joe and I.  But not the point of my blog today…certainly a great topic to dig into as I listen to parents praise the KTU program- Explore College- the parent part of the program this weekend!!

I've always thought it might be fun for one of the kids to go to Middlebury (we vacationed close by on Lake Dunmore for years growing up- one of my favorite places in the world) or even St. Lawrence- we were lucky enough to visit friends who work there one year- one of my favorite drives was through Lake Placid on the way to VT) but it what lurked in the back of my mind was- but the winters- oh so terribly cold…..

Not anymore.  Extroverting while at Denison on Saturday I realized this winter has prepared us for anything.  We're capable to roll with the cold much more than I ever had imagined.  This morning I walked the dog and though- oh it must be very cold today.  I was even wearing the church mission purchase/recycled fur coat and thought it was cold.  I was out on that day with -21 and places in Licking County deemed the coldest anywhere in the USA. Today felt just about as cold.  Just looked at my phone:  it is -5, yes negative 5.  I'm typing this to document it.  This is the cold winter- the snowy cold winter.  We'll remember this - like the ice storm, the hot ball game summer, the wind storm summer.  Life on Newark-Granville Road is cold and preparing us for our future no doubt!  Of course this may drive our children's eyes to southern schools…liberal arts Rollin's College is looking pretty good too!

Love all day long…..

Today was a day a day filled with love….Denison love for sure as the day was spent on campus and Denison was this wonderful partner to my work and my family.  Kids Tech University- an amazing program brought to Licking County by Marcia Downes from Virgina Tech (I love VA- I was born there, my dad is a Hoakie).  Thanks to Dow Chemical, individual donors, Licking County Foundation, Park National Bank, Polymer Technologies, Denison, OSU, A Call to College- The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art and Technology and a bunch of great staff and volunteers 100 plus kids 9-12 and their parents/grandparents had an amazing on campus experience today at Denison.  There are 4 events in the year- 1st one went really well at OSU-N, today was the 2nd…can't wait for 3rd and 4th- one back at Denison and 4th at The Works.  These kid were in a science classroom with wonderful learning about psychology and the brain happening- yeah Nester Matthews!! Parents learning about how to help their child achieve college- helpful hints for all.  Kids from all over, from various socio-economic backgrounds, girls and boys- amazing.  I left Newark-Granville Road at 8 am thrilled to help post signs to help these folks navigate the fair college on the hill.

The day also included Sally and Peter and Granville Red basketball teams playing games during half-time during the Women's and Men's Basketball games.  Joe coordinates this and we all appreciate his making this happen.  We thank the Coaches, staff and players at Denison for hosting, allowing this to happen.  It is so much fun to watch your kid on  a college court, watch their excitement and enthusiasm.    I really do love to spend time in the gym watching my kids play, watch Joe coach.  Sally joined the club- all Leithauser kids have had Mike Hills announce….basket by Leithauser!  Joe and kids met me in Curtis to have lunch with KTU crew.  Wow- Denison's food service is doing an exceptional job and it was fun to connect with a friend working there now.  Kids and KTU students and staff we're all thrilled with the offerings and atmosphere.

My life loves days like this- when my own history, my work and family's passions all meet together-thank you Denison for the special role you play.  Perfect timing for me as I get ready to support:

http://support.denison.edu/love”    More to come on twitter and facebook this week!! More photos there too from a great day in my life on Newark-Granville Road!

accepting death and celebrating life.

I've shared with a few people- I truly believe heaven needed get-it-done volunteers last week.  Four people who contributed greatly to this community, who personally inspired me past away. It feels like heaven opens up at time and energies move from here to there.

The first I learned about was Ted Barclay.  I met Ted when he held infant Sally while I gave blood at the Granville Rotary Blood drive in 2005.  I knew of him but that was when we learned each other's names. I'm so glad I knew him and I'm so glad I attended his funeral this week.  I learned more about Ted and his impressive legacy.  I took notes and have future blog material.  In particular I loved the quote in by Emerson - Nothing Great Was Ever Achieved without Enthusiasm.

The second was Jill Griesse. This has taken some time to sink in as she was indeed an inspiration for me.  I met Jill during my Denison days at a fundraiser. She has always been a role model for giving, supporting and making things happen for her causes. It was an honor and privilege to know her, be hosted by her and have her share honest rich advice and perspective with me.   I will miss her so very much, but there are others closer who will miss her more and I feel for them with her death.  Her memorial service is Feb 18th and I know it will be a comfort as I process this loss and heaven's gain.

The third was Joe Fleming- Denison's past IT Director and Works volunteer.  It was always fun for me to see this Denison friend volunteering at The Works when I was there with my kids or volunteering myself.  All volunteers that help with school tours and education advise inspire me.  It was an honor to talk with his son and hear the stories of his Granville days.

My week wrapped up with the news about Henry Hook- Newark physician. I didn't know him as well but certainly enjoyed his participation at Works events. He was a dedicated member no doubt because of his passion and interest in technology and science.  His obituary gave me insight and perspective.

I am a person that sees many sides to things.  I understand death is part of life, I accept death but then then I think about a person simply not being here any longer and it baffles me.  This can't be- all of these people did wonderful things and I sooo enjoyed their company- how can they be gone.  Then I think about the loss for their loved ones and I'm sad.  I updated the database at The Works, marked these folks as deceased.  That hit me- we won't mail to them. We'll keep their records for history and certainly continued to be inspired by their good work.  They all leave legacies that will carry on what they started here.   Heaven is in a good place with these four good souls.  Life on Newark-Granville Road is better me, my children, those that came before us and will come after because they were here.

The good news is a beautiful new life was welcomed to our community! Lauren and Canon Krebehene shared the happy news June is a big sister to Freeman William! Perfect timing- life goes on and their is much to love and be thankful for on Newark-Granville Road.  All around there is great comfort in faith, friendships to support us, people to inspire us and hope for the future.

escape, take a break and be happy…..

I appreciate this article from Denison's president Adam Weinberg. I found it on one of his "tweets" with the comment similar to- good advice for students…..I think it is good advice for anyone who may put their life into their work, and work into their life…..or well said at the Ground Hog Breakfast last week- their heart into the business and the business in their heart…

http://www.fastcompany.com/3024608/how-to-be-a-success-at-everything/6-simple-habits-to-keep-you-consistently-happy-every-day

Reality is I read the article quickly and stopped at the point I really liked- point 3 about disengagement is what I wanted to explore further on my blog, reflect on how I do this in my life on Newark-Granville Road.  One way I disengage at the end of the day is to read.  The book club I am part of helps keep me engaged and therefore disengaged!  I do sleep better when I let my brain focus on the pages and their worlds.  I like this idea for a regular walk- Griffey would certainly appreciate this.  I will use TV or this blogging ritual but reality is I prefer not to use electronics- something about brain waves still being engaged with multimedia approaches.  Another point about disengagement for me is place- just came from Moundbuilders Country Club.  One of the reasons we value MCC in our lives on Newark-Granville Road it is a place that lets us focus on our family and friends. We can be there to enjoy one another and escape a bit- Joe enjoys this too and why he is willing to serve on its Board. I'm grateful to him and the others serving to help this special place in our lives.

Because I posted the article I read the full article- I strongly recommend taking a look- I value his perspective and recommendations.  The good news is I'm following his advice on most and will try hard to make sure all 6 are part incorporated into my life on Newark-Granville Road.

how much snow would a snow plow plow…...

if a snow plow could plow snow!  I don't know why this silly ditty is stuck in my head?  Maybe because I just drove home from downtown Newark and felt like I was skiing out west.  I learned to ski in high school at Blue Knob in PA and I learned to ski on ice.  I didn't experience powder snow until an adult on ski trips with Joe.  Anyway the drive home felt more like that kind of skiing than driving.  I did see one snow plow going the other way on Rt. 16.  I did drive one lightly dusted pavement on Newark-Granville Road at the Cherry Valley intersection.  The snow plow's yellow lights glowing ahead of me in the distance.  It was a beautiful drive home and I am sooo grateful for Martha the SUV with 4 wheel drive and good tires…and a full tank of gas.

Since I've pontificated about snow days in the past on the blog…I feel compelled to share my thoughts today.  http://www.musictory.com/music/Bleu/Snowday is where I go…yes yes- bring it on..I'm ready for a snow day!! (I love this song, know the writer/performer- really I know his Mom- I love her work- lyrics below- share with your kids!!!  Anyway- yes I've brought my work home, the schedule has phone calls that I can make happen here, I have flex time to make it work…I'm ready mother Nature, Mr. Superintendent- I can't wait for your call!

Life on Newark-Granville Road the winter of 2014 is a snowy one and it really is beautiful and I'm grateful that I'm in a place to enjoy it….but it does need plowed…so thank you to the snow plow drivers out there tonight.

Lyrics to Snowday :
Hey hey
I woke up to the radio
And the glare of a blanket
Of fallen snow
When I heard the DJ speak to me
In a voice that was thick
As an evergreen
He announced all the schools
That were closing

On my kneeds and pray
For a snowy day
'Cause I need a break
And I wanna sled the day away
I need a snow day

Hey hey
The leaves all fell
And the streets were cold
But the sky was as dry as a bone
When the clouds rolled in
Like a holy sign
We all built up a fort
At the bus stop sign
Trackin' snow in the door
At the five & dime
Get the marshmallows ready for cocoa time

On my knees and pray
For a snowy day
'Cause I need a break
And I wanna sled the day away
I need a snow day

Hey hey!

in 2009…..

Here is what I wrote in August of 2009- 3rd or 4th post!!  Wow- never thought I'd still be blogging…..busy, tired, sad, happy enjoying my kids while Joe out of town….all reasons for bringing back an oldie…..

August 2009- Sharing fun events is what this blog is all about...and spreading the word about good things.
-It is hard to believe Labor Day weekend is next weekend. We're looking forward to a visit from my parents and some great activities- including picnicking at Dawes withe Bluegrass, BBQ and Boom next Sunday 9/3. Fantastic music, beautiful setting and fun people- join us! Tickets are available at Dawes in August or at the door (doors open at 3) tickets are $10, 10 and under free!

We'll be sorry to miss the movie at the GSVA- another activity you should consider!

And back to favorites- lunch yesterday was indeed a favorite- Farmers Market BLT- the pepper bacon from the vendor at the Gville farmers market with all the coolers- I should know their name, a light and flavorful lettuce from another, sourdough bread from...the cat folks and tomatoes from nice neighbors- we were in heaven! It was also good to connect with some fun people and see Denison students and families back in town.

Cocktails by the Fire Reflections

Ahhhhh- Cocktails by the Fire 2014 is almost in the books.  Last night was indeed a very special night for me for many reasons.  Was it perfect?  Depends on how you define and measure perfection.  I'm not sure perfection really exists.  Was it a success- hands down!  When you have over 350 (guests, volunteers, in-kind donors) all in one place supporting a place the Works how can you not call it a success.  And of course I have to take the time to say thank you.

So many people to thank and I'll miss so many so I won't go into detailed lists now.  I'm thankful to those that walked with me- the host committee is key to this event. I love that this event has this tradition- not only to reach new people but to give The Works staff a chance to connect with folks in this way. The tasting party, the emails, the circle of friends and family to bring into the event.  Staff- we don't do this very often- through a 350 person party.  We're a museum- we do school and adult tours, engage with individuals and small groups- but once, sometimes two times during HATSOFF! years, we close down the museum, push back the exhibits and open a bar. This is where the inability to be perfect happens.  But we pull it off thanks to staff and volunteers.  Often staff's family are the volunteers!  I'm pretty proud of Sally for helping so well yesterday- love sharing my love of events @ The Works with my family. My parents are here helping with the kids (seeing basketball too) and of course Joe might as well be staff.  Same goes for Rori's mom, Marcia's husband and daughter, Craig's wife, Laura and Shelly's husbands, Sam's brother, Jenna and Justin's kids,  Janice's husband…oh that's right I don't want to be doing lists here…sorry.

What is fun for me is I get to see so much- not all. I missed a number of great guests! Can't wait to see Carlo's photos- facebook helps me with this a bit. I'm so grateful to every person who attended- I love guests who come pay and enjoy enjoy enjoy- this event is for you and you do it well. You tell me it is your favorite and you wear a smile the whole night.  You dress up, you theme up, you tell your friends, you keep the party going in downtown Newark- woo hoo!  I don't get to talk to all of you, but just seeing you or having the moment we had in the museum- means so much.

I love seeing new and old friends go the extra mile for this event- the Matesich team puts meeting time, set up, delivery, pick-up, tap time into this even and boy does it make a difference - I could type and type about them.  The Works volunteers and staff- I can't stop typing about them- the bartenders were on fire last night- wow! The new 1882 HATSOFF! room- WOW!! I love HATSOFF! years and this year is already in such an amazing place becuase of the shared talent and time.  Flowers and decorations for this year's CTBF- wow wow wow- Kim Downs delighted me for the the past two days with aroma, creativity, innovation and pure beauty. Everyone oohed and ahhed and learned…yes Cocktails by the Fire was a success- we took our mission and moved to night time for grown-ups.

The Glass Studio deserves it's own paragraph.  The whole Glass Studio program is incredible and growing in amazing ways.  Seeing both AIRs (artist in residence)- most recent and incoming-showcasing their gifts for The Works was incredible. The glasses, slumped pieces, art that tied to our theme and executed this event- LT- you rock.  We all gathered around the "fire" love seeing people realize Cocktails by the Fire is the furnace- not a bonfire in the courtyard - and again we were learning and being inspirited with a cocktail…or yummy new flavor from Velvet- celebrating their 100th Anniversary!! Wow!

The Dagar farmily is inspiring to me year in and year out. Last year at the Ground Hog Breakfast I learned about their natural process and ingredients and wanted to talk that up during this year's Cocktails by the Fire. Our Green Revolution- celebrate sustainability, enjoy local- theme aligns perfectly with their product.  But they are so much more than just that and I love their 100th Anniversary is so apart of this year and week.   The ground hog breakfast also featured the Grote family business Donatos.  I can't recall after all the fun work in the past two days the exact quote or which amazing woman said it but I was inspired by both.  I can tell you the goodness that goes into these business was what made The Works: Cocktails by the Fire work so well- we have an amazing family in this community and I'm grateful.
